Since 2008 Gundy is 10-10 verses top 25 teams.
If you take out 2011, he is 5-10 against ranked teams with just 1 win against his two biggest rivals (Texas and OU) being the 2010 5-7 Longhorns. He is not able to get his team to consistently compete at a high level.
He had a great year last year, but does not mean he is the long term solution.
Was Brian Kelly a "B" lister when Notre Dame hired him?
I'm fine with people posting real criticisms with whoever we hire. Cheap comments like this are just ignorant.
You get the best coach you can whether it is offensive or defensive. Would anyone be upset if we brought in say Chip Kelly? Probably not. Would he do much to improve our defense? Not really directly.I agree there was a gap of irrelevance between the Barry Sanders era and the last few years.
He would bring an "Air Raid" offense which lends to greater pressure on the defense. His strengths and our weakness could lead to another disaster.
I was onboard with Gundy until I looked up his record against Texas and OU. 3-13 in 8 seasons against his two biggest rivals. Again, you take out the 2011 season and he has only 1 win.
I don't want the expectation to be 3-13 against Bama and UF the next 8 years.
You will never get through to all these guys that were on Stong's nuts. Either way UT goes half the fan base will be pissed (unless Gruden changes his tune).
How is this going to work out when he has to recruit the South. He has only 2-3 guys on the entire roster that are not from TX or OK.
By the way, this is really a question. I am looking for an opinion based on something substantive, I am not trying to stir the pot.
Obviously the constitution of the staff would address some of these issues in regional recruiting. Peter Sirmon wasn't from here (even though he played for the Titans) and he was one of our best recruiters.Cheap? Maybe I'm confused as to what others' opinions are of an A lister then. Or maybe the list was shorter than I thought. No biggie. Just opinions. He's had ONE great season. And another good season. He's no defensive minded guy. And he does not command, demand respect from his player. I don't see him having the ties and knowledge to recruit from GA and FL. I like the guy and think he could pull well from Texas, just don't think he is what TN needs aT THIS POINT IN THE GAME. No biggie just opinions.
I think you forgot to mention he did this with OK St hmy:
