Mike Gundy offered

Since 2008 Gundy is 10-10 verses top 25 teams.

If you take out 2011, he is 5-10 against ranked teams with just 1 win against his two biggest rivals (Texas and OU) being the 2010 5-7 Longhorns. He is not able to get his team to consistently compete at a high level.

He had a great year last year, but does not mean he is the long term solution.

I think you forgot to mention he did this with OK St :eek:hmy:

Most of you fail to realize that while his D did give up a lot of points, he also played 8 of the top 20 offenses in the nation and still managed to win games with his 3rd string QB most of the season.

Was Brian Kelly a "B" lister when Notre Dame hired him?

I'm fine with people posting real criticisms with whoever we hire. Cheap comments like this are just ignorant.

Cheap? Maybe I'm confused as to what others' opinions are of an A lister then. Or maybe the list was shorter than I thought. No biggie. Just opinions. He's had ONE great season. And another good season. He's no defensive minded guy. And he does not command, demand respect from his player. I don't see him having the ties and knowledge to recruit from GA and FL. I like the guy and think he could pull well from Texas, just don't think he is what TN needs aT THIS POINT IN THE GAME. No biggie just opinions.

How is this going to work out when he has to recruit the South. He has only 2-3 guys on the entire roster that are not from TX or OK.

By the way, this is really a question. I am looking for an opinion based on something substantive, I am not trying to stir the pot.

I agree there was a gap of irrelevance between the Barry Sanders era and the last few years.

He would bring an "Air Raid" offense which lends to greater pressure on the defense. His strengths and our weakness could lead to another disaster.

I was onboard with Gundy until I looked up his record against Texas and OU. 3-13 in 8 seasons against his two biggest rivals. Again, you take out the 2011 season and he has only 1 win.

I don't want the expectation to be 3-13 against Bama and UF the next 8 years.
You get the best coach you can whether it is offensive or defensive. Would anyone be upset if we brought in say Chip Kelly? Probably not. Would he do much to improve our defense? Not really directly.

Get the best coach then get the best coordinators.

You will never get through to all these guys that were on Stong's nuts. Either way UT goes half the fan base will be pissed (unless Gruden changes his tune).

I supported Strong, and was excited about the possibility. I am also excited about the Gundy possibility.

It doesn't have to be an either/or thing. The fanbase doesn't need to be polarized..

If we keep Jay Graham and bring Tee back (he is ready and more than willing to come back) and Gundy brings a DC in that has southeast ties I won't be worried one least little bit, not to mention that we'd pull kids from Oklahoma and Texas like we never have before. Go Vols.:loco:

Obviously the constitution of the staff would address some of these issues in regional recruiting. Peter Sirmon wasn't from here (even though he played for the Titans) and he was one of our best recruiters.

He took over an Oklahoma State team that had been built and coached by Les Miles. He didn't start out from ground zero. He has had 8 seasons to prove his worth against the best of the best. In 2011, he captured lightening in a bottle and had a great season with some quality wins. Outside of 2011, he does not fare well in big games. Even in 2010 when they had a great overall record (11-2 I believe) the level of competition just wasn't there.

I don't dislike the guy and think he is a good coach, just not what we need the program needs based on his big game record.

According to Rivals, he has ranked on average ranked about 30th in recruiting the past 3 or so years. Would he have similar results here?

Understood. No matter who HC is. Staff can make or break. I'm not against Gundy. I just had several names above him in mind. Way better than other names I've heard thrown out: Fedora...Golden..
