Mike Matthews to portal? [He’s staying]

Everything I have been able to find on the portal rules says a player must submit paperwork to enter the winter portal the later of Dec. 28 or within 5 days of the end of their season. The school must submit transfer paperwork within 48 hrs. of receiving it. It's been 10 days since the end of the Vols season, and at least 17 hrs. past the 48 hr. deadline, and nowhere can I find where Matthews is in the portal. So, I would say conclusively that Matthews is not transferring this winter. (My BVS is getting a little better).
I heard it explained that the player only needs to officially request the paperwork by the deadline. After that, they can take as long as need be to decide. If they do go ahead with the transfer, then the school has 48 hours to place their name into the portal. Honestly, who the hell knows.

Your right, couch Hype is just like having another Fulmer 2.0

That is an inaccurately jaundiced outlook. Toward the end, Phil's recruiting went on a Nantucket sleigh ride, and without great players his old school offense just was not getting it done. Coach Heupel is recruiting top ten classes, and he still has the smarts to compete when players execute. I get that the team beat itself this year, with penalties, dropped balls, etc. If Sampson hadn't carried the offense, it would not have done much. But I think Coach Heupel is hungry and he will work hard to achieve more success. My opinion is that we are trending higher, just not in a straight line.

The reputation as an air raid offense was always a lie.
Our reputation was well earned. CJH can say we're a 50/50 run past team all he wants, but when you're looking at the highlight reels in the media for University of Tennessee, all you're going to hear about is our passing game. It wasn't until halfway through this season that the media even acknowledged that our running game was as dominant as it is. So in the eyes of a high school kid a year ago who was looking for a place to go pro, he definitely thought he was joining an air raid offense

They both are too loyal and stubborn about firing their staff.

Did you forget the Randy Sander’s OFC debacle? Sanders wound up firing his own shelf.

Hype was too hardheaded about Milton and Matthew's should have started from day one.

I don’t understand how you can watch what Nico was able to do this year and think he would have been better than Milton last year.

I’m also not sure why people assume that MM was an elite stud who didn’t see the field because Heupel said so. He could easily develop into a star and played well this year but he is NOT Ryan Williams or Jeremiah Smith which so many people assume he is

You sure are dodging my first two sentences.

Which was my whole point of joining in.

Matthews was also injured to start the season. That put him behind. As a freshman you get a few chances to earn more snaps, he had a few that weren’t great. Receiving is just a small part, you have to block too on the perimeter.

It amazes me that people think you can start a bunch of freshmen and still win 10 games? I mean I just don’t get that. You start Matthews if it costs you a win or two? I do think MM will be a great WR here or wherever he lands but he wasn’t quite ready as a freshman

You do realize Mathews was dealing with an injury all summer before the season and slowed his production?

Stop acting like Heupel was deliberately keeping him off the field.

They were 50-50 at UCF, anyone that looked at stats and watched games knew this. He said this a thousand times when he got here, we will be balanced but try to do what defense gives us. Sometimes we will run heavy sometimes it will be pass. You have to be capable of doing both in the sec, it’s just how it is. While I would have liked a few more wrinkles we were working around a patchwork OL and with some receivers that struggled as a group. Once again it was a execution problem more than a play calling problem. Throwing every down with this years offense wasn’t going to solve our problems, it would have only magnified them. GBO

Pope recruited these guys. He spent years and months building a relationship with these WR's. Now all of a sudden, he can't coach or they want him gone is the speculation. If we really look at it, those who are in the portal haven't contributed much and probably won't receive the NIL they think they deserve. I don't know if it's Pope of the players, but it all needs to but to bed before Spring camp.

Heupel said on day one we were a 50-50 run and pass team. We ran the ball great in 22 as well. This was never a air raid concept except to folks that think you can pass every play in the sec. There is nothing wrong wIth our offense except mainly execution.
What I see is that the main problem with our passing game starts with the offensive line.
They were good at run blocking but really bad at pass protection.
As a result, Nico was in a hurry too often, the receivers didn't have time to run any complex routes and we were unable to develop any rhythm with that part of the offense.
We have recruited offensive lineman, they should be ready to be effective for their sophomore and junior years next season. If they are not, then we have a problem.

Notice Nico with time was much more effective.

A year ago we led the SEC in rushing just like we did this year…hell we were 2nd ihis very first year! Stats back it up and I’m sure Hype points this out to recruits

I have watched teams like Alabama and Ohio State feature freshmen from the first game of the season year after year. I think they get 5 stars and know you have to play them because they will only be there 3 years. Some of our 5 stars may have been overrated but not all and we need to play them to show others we will.
