Milton will be HUGE for UT in 2023

We nothing. They scored 56 points
Exactly. Much less than what it should have been against that team. If Hooker is healthy last night, we may have 56 by the end of the first half. Minimum of the 1 or second drive in the 2nd half. Milton killed several offensive drives last night. Cannot have that for the QB1 position.

So glad the Vols have Milton. For all the people bitching about Milton, he does so much more for the offense. The opens up the running game, because of his ability to throw the ball so deep (yes he'll have overthrows, so did Hooker). He also has the ability to absolutely truck folks if he runs just a bit.

The overthrow Joe comments and all the negative comments about how he can't play are just really coming from people that don't truly understand the sport. He will connect on a lot of the deep balls. He didn't have anymore overthrows last night (in a cool driving rain) than Hooker would typically have in a game.

I hope the coaches don't screw with his arm and throwing motion during camp next year. If anything he needs to hold the ball a half second longer and/or put a little more air under the ball.

I am really looking forward to Milton leading the Vols next season, no matter how the bowl game goes. The extra practices and game, gives next year's offense a big advantage.

He was pretty efficient last night. NO TURNOVERS was the best thing about his performance last night and the threat alone of the deep ball really had the defense on their heels, which opened up the run game like the Red Sea.

People can obviously have their opinions and say what they want, but if you're gonna spend the next several months hating on Joe Milton, go pick up a hobby....

You might wanna watch him play.

Loves to throw it AT LEAST 10 yards too far.

I thought he played pretty well last night except for the overthrows. He had zero turn overs in the rain and most importantly he handled the speed of the offense with no penalties or flubs (this is a huge skill in this offense). His handoffs were clean and his short passes were on target. He was bailed out by special teams and the defense in the first half, could have easily been 14-7 or 14-10 at the half. He will be the guy next year but the offense will not average 50 points per game so offensive expectations must be lowered. I would not mind averaging 30 with a defense that could get off the field.

Without speculating on the ultimate outcome of this debate, I think its imperative that CJH bring in some serious QB competition this offseason and make Milton prove he's got the right stuff. "Joeverthrow" wont cut it in 2023.

Good, accurate reply.

@madbamahater Joe will have to improve his completion percentage by a lot to remain QB1 for the VOLS next year. He has to be more accurate. His biggest body of work was 2019 or 2020 at Michigan iirc and his completion percentage was mid 50s, similar to last night‘s 11/21 showing. If he doesn’t under throw Hyatt on the first series it’s a TD, if he hits a wide open Fant it’s a TD. He had several over throws. His TD throw to Walker M. was pretty and he had some other good throws. Better defenses in the sec will simply force Joe to throw (take away the run) and he won’t be able to consistently. I like Joe a lot and would love to be wrong if Joe is QB1 buI don’t think he’s huge for TN next year.

P.S. I hate bama also

Unless Joe has a Jonathan Crompton type turn around most likely he will lose the QB job to one of the younger QBs. Or maybe they design a package for him, the dude is a great runner and that cannon gets the ball to the parameter on a rope. It appeared he intentionally change is arm angle and got extra air under the long throw that Keyton could not haul in, That was a good pass. Let's see how he plays in the bowl game.

I ways loved when fans on the internet make fun of a player that's done nothing but give to the football team just to show how smart he is.

I don't have anything against Joe, great guy and teammate that he is, I do have a problem with you and others of your ilk. I think it is ok for UT fans to critique the coaching, play calling and players performance without always being branded a HATER. I am not sure what background you possess and what great knowledge you have that I do not, but Joe has weaknesses to his game currently. When we play teams that don't start with the letter V we will not be able to run for long touchdown after long touchdown. He is given the overthrow Joe label because he overthrew 7 or 8 receivers yesterday. He threw 3 or 4 beautiful balls but clearly missed on 3 or 4 that would have been touchdowns. He literally missed a wide open tight end in the middle of the field that didn't have a defender within 20 yards of him. The announcers were discussing it all night, I believe Coach JH appeared frustrated with it and so I am going to have to disagree with your whole premise. We did have to run it more often because our passing attack was grounded and largely ineffective after the first completion to Hyatt.

Who said that someone fairly critiquing players and coaches labels you a hater? Not me. I didn't say that. But we do have a percentage of our fan base that just simply hate on the dude because he's not 100 percent completion rate on deep throws. Also, a total misunderstanding everything else he did for the offense. With the cute little funny nicknames like overthrow Joe and others is just really petty and stupid. So he connected on 50% of his deep balls? I would say that that is probably as good as it gets for any quarterback. Do you honestly think you should be at 100% completion rate on deep passes? At least he didn't throw them to the defenders. He did make some nice shorter throws and no one is giving him credit for that. He had zero turnovers in a sloppy wet cold game and no one is giving him credit for that. He ran the offense well with not a lot of penalties. I'm not really sure why you got so offended or took my comment personally, it was meant for our fan base that chooses to literally hate on that dude no matter what.

I hesitate to criticize because the coaches know heck lot more about each players ability and the game than I do, but dang I do not understand the play calling some times. It makes me wonder are they trying to surprise the defense with that call or what.
With the fast backs we have I don’t get why we don’t do screen passes or quick slants with the WRs.
I know it is hard to argue with the yardage we put up, but it was mostly the long runs. We will run off tackle twice for no yardage and be damn will do it again.

Glad coaches get to decide and not anyone on this message board… I will say, Hendon Hooker & Josh Heupel both disagree with you based on what they’ve said…

here’s the thing… as a fan, I’m gonna pull for whomever Coach Heupel says is the starter, If It’s Milton, great! If it’s Jackson, great! If it’s Iamaleava, great! If it’s Moore, great! If it’s Shuler, great! I’ll be pulling for them to do well and lead the team to wins, no matter who it is!
Lordy, I love this post. As fans, that's about all we really CAN do...trust our head coach to know the players and play the ones who will get the job done.

28 of the points were td runs. Milton was 11/21 passing, perhaps this is worse than the downfield overthrows. This offense wont work against quality teams with QB completing 50% of passes.

Have you watched the Vols play this year? A lot of drives stalled under Hooker and there were entire quaters in games this year the offense was out of sink or "off" with Hooker leading the way.

I watched every one of them. Even the ones where our punter never went on the field. Doesn't sound like you watched very many though.

It rained the entire game Vandies 2 QBs were collectively 18-30.

The over thrown, inaccurate balls were not bad throws. The throws were spun really well. Just 10 yards beyond the receiver. It wasn't a rain issue.

Saying they were all 10 yards beyond the receivers is an inaccurate assessment. A few literally barely missed. The rain certainly could have played a factor, especially for the receiver getting downfield....Joe missed on a few. Completely dry conditions? Maybe a couple connect.....

I think Milton can be huge for us, but he has to get a better handle on the overthrows. If I were a D coordinator, I would let him throw over the top all day until he proves he can hit it twice in a row.

He led us to a 56-0 win over an SEC team that beat Florida and Kentucky. I don’t want no quarterback like that! If he can’t be better than Peyton or Hendon then bring JG back!
