Milton will be HUGE for UT in 2023

Milton has to learn how to not overthrow the deep balls. Heupel needs to expand the O to give him more posts and deep crossing routes. He does much better with those types of throws.

Milton will look better when they build the offense around his strengths and weaknesses. He hit those 2 long shots against Missouri and got me pumped up, so we know he CAN do it. I like the fact we have a guy who can run the entire offensive playbook on day 1 next season. This is a complicated offense and when you add the tempo training a QB will not be easy or quick.

I agree this dishing on Milton is way off the charts. I think if every pass was caught and he ran for 200 yards some folks would still find something to nit pick over. The stats show he was 11/21, average 7 yrds, 147 total yards passing , 1 td and no int. Qbr rating of 72. He has spring training and almost a year to get better in the passing game. These folks hitting on Milton are the same folks who each week posted " Are we over looking" ( fill in the blank --Kentucky/Vandy/LSU/ etc ) We should be thankful we have him coming back.
Milton has already had 5 YEARS in college to improve in the passing game. He is what he is...a very strong-armed QB with zero touch and poor accuracy.

I think Milton can be huge for us, but he has to get a better handle on the overthrows. If I were a D coordinator, I would let him throw over the top all day until he proves he can hit it twice in a row.

I like your plan about letting Milton air it very deep. If he throws 6-8 deeps balls and connects on 3-4, I could live with 3 or 4 touchdowns being scored this way each game. This is the reason the Vols ran all over Vandie last night.

Saying they were all 10 yards beyond the receivers is an inaccurate assessment. A few literally barely missed. The rain certainly could have played a factor, especially for the receiver getting downfield....Joe missed on a few. Completely dry conditions? Maybe a couple connect.....
Most all were pretty big misses. I didn't measure them, so they may have been 9 yard misses or 11 yard misses. They were not close though.

He has impoved in 5 years. This is just dumb
Not really. He looks identical to what he did last season at the beginning of the year. Can't say I watched him at MI, but the word as to why he was leaving MI was due to not being able to win the spot there for the same reasons.

What are you taking about? The only thing Joe has consistently done is overthrow receivers by a mile be it rain or shine.

I knew this thread would quickly head south. Many people don't like Milton and are waiting to pounce on him as soon as one ball goes awry. Playing in the immediate shadow of one of the best pure passers to ever play here makes it even harder. Last night we basically ran a lot of go routes into a strong cross wind and driving rain. Keyton dropped one that hit him in the hands that would have also been a big play. The pass to Fant was to a spot, the ball was in the air before Fant even made his break. Not sure if he threw it to the wrong spot or if Fant just didn't get to the spot he was supposed to get to. Those timing routes are greatly affected by repetition, something Milton and Fant have had very little time to work on.

Last night it was rainy with 15-25mph winds at times. CJ Stroud was 10-26-76 yards in rainy/windy conditions vs a 1 win Northwestern team Vandy would beat by 14+ points.

Milton will overthrow people in games next year. There will even be guys behind the defense when it happens. It happens to every QB. If one of the other QBs are better, they'll eventually replace him. If not, he'll play on. But last night the offense delivered 56 points. Not much to complain about but literally almost every other comment in the game thread while we were on offense was mocking Milton and saying the play calling was awful as we just racked up td after td.

If you look back at Heupel offenses, they always score and always have big yardage. They don't always have the elite passing we saw this year, they occasionally have an elite rushing attack instead. We saw that last night.

Lol hey guys, all of you that said that JG wasn't very good just don't understand the sport.
I always loved the whole "if you disagree with me it's because you don't understand things like I do."
O and I prefer Joverthrow Milton.
Hmm, looks to me like you're doing the exact same thing in your first sentence that you criticize others for doing in your second sentence. Use the mirror much?

You know what they say about excuses. At this point I think a sports psychologist would benefit Milton more than coaching.

So glad the Vols have Milton. For all the people bitching about Milton, he does so much more for the offense. The opens up the running game, because of his ability to throw the ball so deep (yes he'll have overthrows, so did Hooker). He also has the ability to absolutely truck folks if he runs just a bit.

The overthrow Joe comments and all the negative comments about how he can't play are just really coming from people that don't truly understand the sport. He will connect on a lot of the deep balls. He didn't have anymore overthrows last night (in a cool driving rain) than Hooker would typically have in a game.

I hope the coaches don't screw with his arm and throwing motion during camp next year. If anything he needs to hold the ball a half second longer and/or put a little more air under the ball.

I am really looking forward to Milton leading the Vols next season, no matter how the bowl game goes. The extra practices and game, gives next year's offense a big advantage.

He was pretty efficient last night. NO TURNOVERS was the best thing about his performance last night and the threat alone of the deep ball really had the defense on their heels, which opened up the run game like the Red Sea.

People can obviously have their opinions and say what they want, but if you're gonna spend the next several months hating on Joe Milton, go pick up a hobby....
8 million dollars my boi.. he ain’t starting past week 4

In the end, fans don't select the starting qb. Heupel and the offensive coaches will evaluate the talent in the spring and fall. It's kind of like the speculation on coaching tenure and salary. Thankfully, there are people who get paid to do this. Sometimes, coaches miss when players excel in actual games and others don't. But, generally, most coaches want to start the guy who gives the team the best chance at winning. And when a coach reevaluates after some real game experience, he might change his first inclination. Last year, replacing Milton with Hooker early in the year for example.

This. I was trying to explain this to people last night but some just refuse to acknowledge he’s much better at throwing over the middle with throws on a rope. They only look at his struggles with deep throws down the sidelines but won’t give him credit for his good throws on slants, shallow and deep crosses, and in routes. Also good at throwing posts.

You completely missed the point of my post. Read the OP's post where he says "The overthrow Joe comments and all the negative comments about how he can't play are just really coming from people that don't truly understand the sport."
I was letting everyone know that they aren't able to point out clear problems with players because, you see, they don't truly understand the sport.
Not to mention it's a strawman. I don't see anyone saying he "can't play" but rather he is what he is and people are worried he's not going to come thru in the clutch like Hooker has.

I ways loved when fans on the internet make fun of a player that's done nothing but give to the football team just to show how smart he is.
I always love when posters dont actually read what someone posts elsewhere about said players and misses the pot stirring with the OP with a joke, this getting their panties in a wad.

I thought he had fixed it until the SC game. If he isn't going to improve on that area it's fine. The coaches need to gameplan around that until maybe it clicks. Stop taking all these shots deep for now. They made it work with Hooker until HE made it work, they can do it with Milton.

Take away packages with deep routes, because if that’s an option, he’s going to throw it.

5 Completions beyond the line of scrimmage.

Bowl game left to play and hopefully the weather cooperates. Looked liked same Milton but he has another chance to exhibit his purported development.
