Milton will be HUGE for UT in 2023

There weren't times the offense was sluggish or stalled this season under Hooker? None?
Of course the offense stalled occasionally with Hooker at the helm. What exactly does that have to do with Joe's accuracy?

I like Joe and very much want him to succeed. At this point he's "next man up" for a reason and I'm just fine with that. I do have legitimate concerns going forward though. Mainly that after being at the college level as long as he has been (2 yrs with CJH), he still has some of the same issues with accuracy he had when he got here.

Milton has already had 5 YEARS in college to improve in the passing game. He is what he is...a very strong-armed QB with zero touch and poor accuracy.
the 3rd play of the game he threw a bomb that got them down to the goal line which led to a TD eventually. He hit some other bombs as well. I say he's better than bringing in a freshman from high school. Glad we have him

The starting QB is Milton’s next year, but up to him to keep it. Frankly I think we may be willing to use him on QB options and QB draws next year given his size. If he can threaten with his feet to the tune of 30-40 yards per game it would put defenses in a predicament. They just going to hope he overthrows and bring safeties up? Not a bad gamble but still a gamble. I don’t mind a wideout or two running deep every play, as that will wear out the opposing DBs, but we will need to rotate our WRs more often and use our depth. Expect our tempo may slow down a touch next year, and hopefully our defense will improve to complement the offense more appropriately.

Regardless, we will score in the 40’s on average because Heupel is our coach and he has proven over and over again that he can put up some points. Milton doesn’t need to complete 70% of his passes like Hooker but 60% would do. Heck Tee Martin only completed 55% of his passes in college…but he made a lot of winning plays with his feet.

A whole off season, buy Joe some trash cans 5 32 gallon so that he can practice touch.

He seems to lack self awareness. Without the run game we still win, but not as convincingly. He’s dancing on the sideline and yacking it up after going 3 and out. I want to see his ass looking at an iPad or on the phone with a coach after having a bad series

Cooper said earlier today about game conditions that the wind was howling, the rain was constant and it was the worst weather conditions he’s played in as a Vol. It was so bad that he was actually very concerned about handling the ball and just getting snaps off accurately.
All y’all armchair quarterbacks and couch coaches are on here ragging on Milton because he and the receivers weren’t connecting and some throws went errant without giving any consideration to what this team actually accomplished last night under crap game conditions.🤦‍♀️

So glad the Vols have Milton. For all the people bitching about Milton, he does so much more for the offense. The opens up the running game, because of his ability to throw the ball so deep (yes he'll have overthrows, so did Hooker). He also has the ability to absolutely truck folks if he runs just a bit.

The overthrow Joe comments and all the negative comments about how he can't play are just really coming from people that don't truly understand the sport. He will connect on a lot of the deep balls. He didn't have anymore overthrows last night (in a cool driving rain) than Hooker would typically have in a game.

I hope the coaches don't screw with his arm and throwing motion during camp next year. If anything he needs to hold the ball a half second longer and/or put a little more air under the ball.

I am really looking forward to Milton leading the Vols next season, no matter how the bowl game goes. The extra practices and game, gives next year's offense a big advantage.

He was pretty efficient last night. NO TURNOVERS was the best thing about his performance last night and the threat alone of the deep ball really had the defense on their heels, which opened up the run game like the Red Sea.

People can obviously have their opinions and say what they want, but if you're gonna spend the next several months hating on Joe Milton, go pick up a hobby....
Over throw Joe let's GO!. Lol JK. GBO who ever it is!!!!

Milton would benefit from different types of deep throws. He seems to overthrow go routes and seam routes. He seems to do better with deep posts where there’s some angle to the route. That’s my perception anyway. I haven’t looked back to see if it’s true.

You are spot on correct. He is great on slants and deep posts. Terrible on sideline go routes

Who said that someone fairly critiquing players and coaches labels you a hater? Not me. I didn't say that. But we do have a percentage of our fan base that just simply hate on the dude because he's not 100 percent completion rate on deep throws. Also, a total misunderstanding everything else he did for the offense. With the cute little funny nicknames like overthrow Joe and others is just really petty and stupid. So he connected on 50% of his deep balls? I would say that that is probably as good as it gets for any quarterback. Do you honestly think you should be at 100% completion rate on deep passes? At least he didn't throw them to the defenders. He did make some nice shorter throws and no one is giving him credit for that. He had zero turnovers in a sloppy wet cold game and no one is giving him credit for that. He ran the offense well with not a lot of penalties. I'm not really sure why you got so offended or took my comment personally, it was meant for our fan base that chooses to literally hate on that dude no matter what.

Milton will be HUGE for UT in 2023 --- why are they moving him to Tight End or Middle linebacker? ;-)

"So he connected on 50% of his deep balls?" I don't think anyone said that. He completed one out of 7 or 8 deep balls - that's not 50% He completed about 50% of all of his passes including the quick screens. I don't see many fans hating on him, they (we collectively) are wanting him to improve and pass with more touch and skill than he did Saturday - he will have to if we expect to win against the middle of the pack in the SEC - he will have to play great and WAY better - for us to compete with the elites in the conference. Quarterback play is the most important position by a wide wide margin in football. There are only a few truly gifted quarterbacks and a large percentage of them end up in our conference. We need and want to maintain the excellence that Hooker established.

That extra 5 yards of arm strength becomes even more of a weapon if we get an o line that can protect him for an extra 1/2 second. Receivers will always get open far downfield, and we have a QB who can reach them.

OP is right about it helping the running game too.

Weakness might be offense in the red zone

I don't think he gets that part - he thought he played great against __________ might have been Bowling Green last year - he wasn't accurate at all. Saturday he was having a big time with his teammates which is great, and I can see, but to your point - he needs to be a smart leader of the offense - you can only get so far with slick dance moves on the sideline.

What do you mean by he will be huge for UT in 2023? Like sec champs? CFP? Do you know how unlikely it will be for him to have a season like the one Hooker just had?

He definitely had more overthrows than Hooker would have, but I’ve still got this little bit of hope that once he’s settled in, he’ll be more comfortable. If he continues the overthrows, the advantage of his canon will go away, as defenses won’t have to worry so much about a receiver being open 60 yards down the field. I’m still hanging on to hope that he fixes the problem. It was worse last year..

Anyone know Milton's comp% over 20 yards vs Hooker? I'd be curious as to the difference...also Milton seems to overthrown squirrel alot....maybe trouble adjusting to shorter receivers...

I think the problem with Milton is gameday adrenaline and then the excitement causes him to overthrow or make questionable decisions at times. He could be an amazing quarterback if he can get that under control... my concern is, he hasn't by now.

He doesn't need to change his motion, but he does need more air under the ball on deep throws. They can work on his touch.

I like Joe Milton but unless I am blind, he stared down his receivers and never made progressions to other receivers. He misses way more than he hits and he is a Senior. How is he this bad this far down the road. We gonna get spanked next year by all the big guys including South Carolina and we get 7 wins tops. I wish it weren't true. But then perhaps we pull him after a couple of losses and start improving with a freshman QB and get to 8 wins. I would be thrilled with that right now.

No Milton = gaurantano, won’t get any better
Yep. Amazing that people who saw the JG era unfold can still look at Milton and think that more reps and spring ball will be all he needs to become the next Hooker in this offense. No offense to Milton, but he's not some freshman or RS freshman. He's had a lot of time in college ball and 2 years in this system. Milton is who and what he is and another spring and fall camp will change this. I'm just hoping the staff doesn't make the same mistakes that Pruitt and his bunch did. There have been 3 coaching staffs try to unlock the mystery that is #7 with no apparent success. As they say, there are some guys who don't practice well but are real gamers. Milton is the opposite. Looks great in practice but when the lights come on.....

We need a proven guy from the portal. I just can't imagine that Heupel and this staff feel comfortable going into next season with just Milton, TJ and Nico in that room. Nico might be the real deal, but it's a rare cat who can make the move from HS to the SEC at that position. Maybe he's the next Young. I've read that they love TJ, but he's as good as a freshman. He's not gotten a lot of meaningful reps and I have a hard time thinking he's going to be ready to take the job in the spring either. Just no way to go into next year with Milton being the default choice. I'd pay for a proven qb from the portal and not force TJ or Nico before they're ready.

3 different staffs have been trying for what...5 years? Our staff for 2 years. Were the light going to come on, one would think we'd have seen it happen by now.
