Milton will be HUGE for UT in 2023

He's going to be so huge that Tennessee coaches are actively seeking a portal QB transfer for next season. There's at least one higher profile Big 10 QB that they've been flirting with. I think Milton is who he is and he's a backup QB. And I don't care how many millions they are throwing at Nico I don't think they are going to throw a true freshman QB into the SEC meat grinder unless the season unravels to the point where you think you are better off getting him some reps. I think the starter for the season opener next year will be someone not already on campus that will come in from the portal.

I wish he would run more and they would use him similar to the way the Eagles use Jalen Hurts. I'd love to see 10+ designed runs for Milton a game. I highly doubt he is going to develop this summer into someone who can sit back there and pick apart a defense with his arm, but he has all the talent in the world to be a guy who throws for 200 yards and rushes for another 75 yards per game on average.

Very spring game offense against Vandy and Joe showed he needs to dial in his balls to about 75% touch on most throws.

I always love when posters don't actually read what someone posts elsewhere about said players and misses the pot stirring with the OP with a joke, this getting their panties in a wad.
I don't need to read elsewhere. All I commented on on is right there.

My panties aren't in a wad, when they are it's definitely noticable.

It's hard to gauge Milton on last Saturday's performance. In addition to the rain, we ran for nearly 400 yards. When you're doing that, you're not going to ask your QB to do much.

I think next yr will come down to Milton vs Nico. I think Milton will open as the starter but Nico will replace him by mid year at the latest

DUDE They aint paying Lamvea(sp) 8 mill large to sit the bench. If Milton still starting 1 st game next year- we in a heap of trouble.

Ahh. Milton haters. Would love to see y’all fat a$$ couch potatoes do any better.

Well, duh. I would bet 99.99999% of posters on this board were inferior QB’s to Joe Milton. I would take him over JG, McBride, Shrout, Dormady, Worley, Peterman, Crompton, Stephens, Rick Clausen and the rest of the mediocre QBs we’ve had the last 17 years any day of the week. But we fans also have eyes. He hasn’t shown he can make the throws necessary to win big games. Period. You can hit a couple big throws and complete 50% of your passes to beat Vandy, but in the bowl game and beyond, that isn’t going to cut it.

/Remind me in one year...

One way or the other this will be the "I'm eating crow thread next year".

JM7 balls out next year FYI. Boom the line has been drawn.

So glad the Vols have Milton. For all the people bitching about Milton, he does so much more for the offense. The opens up the running game, because of his ability to throw the ball so deep (yes he'll have overthrows, so did Hooker). He also has the ability to absolutely truck folks if he runs just a bit.

The overthrow Joe comments and all the negative comments about how he can't play are just really coming from people that don't truly understand the sport. He will connect on a lot of the deep balls. He didn't have anymore overthrows last night (in a cool driving rain) than Hooker would typically have in a game.
....
I am hopeful Milton will meet your expectations, but was very disappointed in his performance vs. Vandy. As far as your "people that don't truly understand the sport" comment, it's a lame argument. You can stretch the D with 40 yd. passes to open up the run game. If you can't hit the short and intermediate throws, the offense will stall far too often. Milton has overthrown receivers at a MUCH higher rate than Hooker. If he can't hit those passes, he'll be watching from the sidelines again at some point next season. I'm not a Milton "hater" (damm, I hate that term), I really thought he was a lock for starting QB next season. After Saturday's performance, I'm having doubts.

It rained the entire game Vandies 2 QBs were collectively 18-30.
Which is a better % than JM had. I truly hope something clicks for him and he ends up becoming the man. He will have to hit 50% of deep balls, make quicker reads, develop some touch, and have better game awareness. Not sure why these things haven’t changed in his 5 years of College football, but they will have to if he is going to lead CJH offense.

You need at least 2 QBs.

I'd say either plan is valid.
Play Nico and get a legit veteran QB that can play in this system.

Crompton made a pretty big turn for the good after a bad season if I remember right

If you are comparing him to Jarrett Guarantano, you simply don't understand the sport and/or truly don't like the sport.
What I understand is Milton has not exhibited anything that would lead one to believe he can get it done at a level that will make the offense hum. I hope he can, but I haven't seen it. Guarantano at times displayed more accuracy than what I have seen from Milton, and would have fared much better under Heupel than under that piece of crap from Alabama. If Milton doesn't markedly improve his accuracy, he should convert to TE. He might have an NFL career at that position. He will not have an NFL career at QB. Based on what I've seen thus far, I would pick Jackson over Milton, simply because Milton has not shown he can get it done. Jackson may not either, but at this point we don't know. I expect a very heated battle for the #1 QB spot this spring.

Expect Heupel to bring in another QB too. Via transfer portal

I knew this thread would quickly head south. Many people don't like Milton and are waiting to pounce on him as soon as one ball goes awry. Playing in the immediate shadow of one of the best pure passers to ever play here makes it even harder. Last night we basically ran a lot of go routes into a strong cross wind and driving rain. Keyton dropped one that hit him in the hands that would have also been a big play. The pass to Fant was to a spot, the ball was in the air before Fant even made his break. Not sure if he threw it to the wrong spot or if Fant just didn't get to the spot he was supposed to get to. Those timing routes are greatly affected by repetition, something Milton and Fant have had very little time to work on.

Last night it was rainy with 15-25mph winds at times. CJ Stroud was 10-26-76 yards in rainy/windy conditions vs a 1 win Northwestern team Vandy would beat by 14+ points.

Milton will overthrow people in games next year. There will even be guys behind the defense when it happens. It happens to every QB. If one of the other QBs are better, they'll eventually replace him. If not, he'll play on. But last night the offense delivered 56 points. Not much to complain about but literally almost every other comment in the game thread while we were on offense was mocking Milton and saying the play calling was awful as we just racked up td after td.

If you look back at Heupel offenses, they always score and always have big yardage. They don't always have the elite passing we saw this year, they occasionally have an elite rushing attack instead. We saw that last night.

I don’t think its accurate to say that people who make analytical comments on a discussion board don’t like Milton. It’s called a discussion forum.

I have nothing against the guy and he appears to be a positive VFL teammate but the offense will be severely limited if he is QB1 and doesn’t improve his long downfield accuracy.

Just an observation without any hate involved.

I hope the coaches don't screw with his arm and throwing motion during camp next year. If anything he needs to hold the ball a half second longer and/or put a little more air under the ball.

I am really looking forward to Milton leading the Vols next season, no matter how the bowl game goes. The extra practices and game, gives next year's offense a big advantage.

He was pretty efficient last night. NO TURNOVERS was the best thing about his performance last night and the threat alone of the deep ball really had the defense on their heels, which opened up the run game like the Red Sea.

People can obviously have their opinions and say what they want, but if you're gonna spend the next several months hating on Joe Milton, go pick up a hobby....
Great post. The only thing I'd like to see handled differently next year with respect to Joe is I'd like to see us run more QB Power with our bigger RBs as lead blockers. I don't know how good of a blocker Khalifa Keith will be but if he's really coming in at 225 lbs, him and Milton running downhill along with a pulling guard would be tough to stop.

Without Hooker, I see Tennessee getting matched against another 10-2 level team with their Q.B. and getting blown away. I hope I'm wrong.

Pretty much....

Yet dozens of people will continue to argue otherwise.
Probably. Because what good will it do to criticize the guy? We all know he's been inconsistent, but he's still here and he's still got time to improve his game.

You should read elsewhere, where I've made a lot of positive comments on Milton this year and as the likely starter next year.

Let’s support this young man. He showed class when he lost the starting position to Hooker. They r roomies and great friends. Even their dogs get along. He’s very talented w great arm strength.
I trust r staff to finely tune him during the off season.

You're preaching to the choir, Boston. Given the amount of Milton mocking by some VN'ers, I was being sarcastic in stating how pointless it is to praise him, as it is poison to his haters. Personally, I think he's going to be dynamic. Especially if his bevy of WRs are anywhere near those Hooker had the privilege of throwing to. I look forward to our bowl game, this should give us a solid indication of what to expect in fall 2023.
