Milton will be HUGE for UT in 2023

So glad the Vols have Milton. For all the people bitching about Milton, he does so much more for the offense. The opens up the running game, because of his ability to throw the ball so deep (yes he'll have overthrows, so did Hooker). He also has the ability to absolutely truck folks if he runs just a bit.

The overthrow Joe comments and all the negative comments about how he can't play are just really coming from people that don't truly understand the sport. He will connect on a lot of the deep balls. He didn't have anymore overthrows last night (in a cool driving rain) than Hooker would typically have in a game.

I hope the coaches don't screw with his arm and throwing motion during camp next year. If anything he needs to hold the ball a half second longer and/or put a little more air under the ball.

I am really looking forward to Milton leading the Vols next season, no matter how the bowl game goes. The extra practices and game, gives next year's offense a big advantage.

He was pretty efficient last night. NO TURNOVERS was the best thing about his performance last night and the threat alone of the deep ball really had the defense on their heels, which opened up the run game like the Red Sea.

People can obviously have their opinions and say what they want, but if you're gonna spend the next several months hating on Joe Milton, go pick up a hobby....

I am still one the fence with Joe, he can throw some great passes and he can also make you scratch your head. You are correct the wild card is how deep he can throw it, got to respect that as a defense, and the fact he can run the ball with authority.

I don't think we win the Bama game with Joe, Florida yes and LSU 50/50.

Let's hope CJH can work him. and get Nico ready as well cause he will probably be needed at some point next year.

i will say that i noticed him rolling out more. that's huge. especially because he does have wheels.

Overthrow Joe is not my pick for QB in 23!!!!! If you cannot control your throws by the time you are in college your not going to the best QB. Those over throws are going to bite you in the ass in close games.

giving our player a stupid and degrading nickname makes you look bad.

3 different staffs have been trying for what...5 years? Our staff for 2 years. Were the light going to come on, one would think we'd have seen it happen by now.

The light didn't come on for Josh Allen until he'd been in the NFL for three years. He was a 56% passer at Wyoming and was plagued by inaccuracy and overthrows, which continued his first 2 years in the NFL. Milton may never get it fixed, but the notion that because it hasn't happened yet, it never will, is faulty logic.

Also, who are the 3 staffs? Harbaugh's, Heupel's, and who?

I’ll have to wait and see how he looks in the bowl game in clean weather. But. Saying he had no more overthrows than Hooker woulda had is laughable. Hooker was very accurate on the deep ball this year.

Yeah, no, I don't see Milton being "it" in 2023. People holding on to the same hope they had for G. He's not a highschool kid, he's a senior. We've witnessed his ceiling.

3rd and long will continue to be some kind of adventure for the Vols as long as Milton remains QB. He just cannot hit that intermediate 7 to 12 yard pass. It was so bad the staff just called for the bomb which he continued to miss except for one on 3rd and long. If he can't hit it after years and years of college football, he's not going to hit it consistently any time soon.

Milton would benefit from different types of deep throws. He seems to overthrow go routes and seam routes. He seems to do better with deep posts where there’s some angle to the route. That’s my perception anyway. I haven’t looked back to see if it’s true.
Thank you. This is exactly correct on what I saw during the game. While he hit Hyatt on the first vertical route he was overthrowing that one. Fant got bumped early and didn‘t seem to be hustling as he should have had that one but it was raining hard at that point.

The bowl game against decent competition will tell us mostly what to expect in 2023 from Milton. I was not impressed even a smidgen with his performance against Vandy. I saw mostly what I saw in early 2021 which isn’t good but maybe he has small hands for a 6’4” 245 lb man and the rain affected his 5 thousand overthrows. We’ll see. I sincerely hope the guy puts it all together and has a year similar to the year Hooker just had minus the injury but I suspect what we just saw from Milton isn’t going to get much better. I’d love to be wrong.

More short and medium ranges passes will help too. Ppl take the overthrowing thing too far. Those passes by nature have low completion rates. Give Milton more short and medium passes and it works. He's not like JG who would bullet a ball to receivers and nearly break their fingers. Joe has a solid rocket cannon of an arm- but coaches need to set him up for success with more medium throws.

I think Milton would also potentially be a great H back -
d-line men seem to bounce off of him - he’s very athletic, I am sure he could catch passes- just teach him how to block and you have an H back.
Not saying he can’t make it at qb - or won’t be playing qb - just that his makeup - size, athleticism is suitable for an Hback.

Dont forget that he had one drop on a deep ball and Fant slowed down a little when he was open. He slowed down because Hooker doesnt lead the receivers as much as Milton does. That will get fixed with more reps.

As I said in another thread, I like Joe Milton…he’s got a positive attitude and energy. He seems like a really good guy. That said, we were playing VANDY in a quasi-home game! Of course the running game worked for us when the biggest guy on Candy’s team is their punter. In all seriousness though, Joe is a decent backup QB. He’s built like a thoroughbred, but that luster means nothing when the Offensive passing game sputters…which is a key element to coach H’s strategy. And that is what matters…our execution of the overall offense! We ran well bc we had to and bc Candy was bad. For us to do this against OSU or Clemson or USC (west), we will need our QB to be a threat both passing and running! I didn’t see that at all from JM. In fact, after the first successful deep ball, there were no more THE ENTIRE GAME! He didn’t run past the line of scrimmage nor did he make any quick reads…this is often overlooked until you play a decent front seven then the QB gets sacked bc he stands there like a statue waiting. In short, he’s playing the exact same way he did last year when he got benched. If either of our younger guys show any success they will be starting. Coach H recruited Milton but Coach H also recruited Nico and T as well…plus he likes to win. So, you will see Milton start in spring and maybe fall, only to be benched unless of course we see a 5th year senior have an epiphany and turn his in-game skills completely around…we’ve been down this road before and know where it leads. GBO!

He definitely wasn’t a liability, he definitely didn’t look great. However, that was his first full start in over a year and weather conditions certainly weren’t ideal. It was a constant stream of rain from kickoff to final whistle. I’m willing to cut him some slack. Bowl practice will soon commence with him taking all the snaps with the 1’s and in 3 weeks, he will start in the biggest bowl game Tennessee has played in over 20 years. If he wins that game, he has my full support going into 2023. If we lose because he couldn’t complete routine passes, he should not be guaranteed the starting spot by any means heading into 2023.

It's pointless to be positive about Milton. See, we have a faction of Vols-player haters who, like the saw scale viper of Arabia, hides under a rock. Waiting, just waiting for the opportunity to strike. And they love doing that, so are incurable of their Vols-plaer hatreds.
Let’s support this young man. He showed class when he lost the starting position to Hooker. They r roomies and great friends. Even their dogs get along. He’s very talented w great arm strength.
I trust r staff to finely tune him during the off season.

Reps with the 1’s will help a lot. I’ve noticed he has a good connection with Keyton and Merril especially on deep passes over the middle which is probably because those are the guys he’s usually throwing to.

A agree in everything you posted. The problem as I see it, Tennessee has a favorable schedule for the beginning of next season. Regardless of who is starting, the coaches must call all the plays needed to play the top tier teams. That way, they can observe which QB can make all the plays and not lose a game because one or more of the QBs can make the winning plays when needed. That one loss could mean the difference in where they finishing the SEC and the Nation. That is why Spring and Fall practices are so important.

We'll see how it goes. I could see him having a couple games where he has a hot hand and drops bombs all day, but as of today I expect our offense to be pretty streaky if he's the QB.
