Miss St. Transfer OT Percy Lewis (Auburn)

The Chicken Littles are out in full throat. That includes Basilio. Recently the problem most likely is that Mincey and the top OLs we are in on all want to play left tackle and do not want to play right tackle because of potential NFL money. Our LT is Campbell and he doesn't want to play RT and he is better than Mincey. Heard, Lewis, Pounds and McKinley are or want to play LT. Dayne Davis played over Mincey in the bowl at RT for a reason and probably was not injury related.
McKinley? He’s a DT.

He was at LT?

Mincey started at LT for the bowl game.

I think it's deeper than that. They are being asked to move at a much faster pace in our offense which obviously requires them to be in better physical condition. But at the same time, they are being told by our competitors that it doesn't even prepare them for the next level because no one in the NFL plays at the pace that Tennessee does.

So that is the fight we are up against. "Go to Tennessee and be pushed to your limit, physically, and not be prepared for what NFL football looks like."

Whether it's true or not is irrelevant if kids will believe what Bama, UGA, and Ole Miss staff's are telling them.
While it very well may be, Darnell Wright accidentally follows the offseason conditioning sheet for WR’s, and he wows the Bears in his test before fall camp. He then proceeds to have a solid rookie season. It helps to be a conditioned OL.

Interesting take.

Why does it matter how we fill the spots in the interim with the portal if we’re getting good production from the OL?

Also, if the portal guys you get have multiple years of eligibility, why wouldn’t that be sustainable?
HS 5 Stars have historically been a 50/50 proposition.
HS 4 Stars have historically yielded 1/4 odds.

It’s why the perennial powers recruit Blue Chips - because the odds on 3’s & 2’s are much, much worse.

But all of them are a gamble, just with different odds.

If we can recruit guys with 2-3 years left out of the portal, that have high college level reps and film?

That sounds like an even better proposition to me. Jmo.

But Campbell is back for a 2nd year, so not sure what the issue is. Heard is a true soph if we get him.

And more importantly, the OL has been very productive under Elarbee.

Complaining about things that haven’t been an issue is weird.
Tell it do the donors who want to light a fire under him to start closing.

Campbell returning was a surprise. Heard hasn’t committed, hence the worry. We are short 2 starters for this year. And a lot of question marks for next year. Mays, Spraggins, and Campbell will be gone. Since none of our current underclassmen are in the rotation, you want to keep signing portal guys to fill every spot. And I’m not the only one worrying.

Name those SIGNIFICANT donors or it did not happen! Doubt DW is fearing the loss of the $7.50 from the NegaVols.

I listened to Basilio’s points on this. He - like most of us - supports Heupel. But it’s pretty clear the folks that forked over the cash for Nico want a complete team around him. Ellerbe has zero OL that he has recruited from high school even in the rotation. We recruited Campbell as a 1 year rental, and got a bonus. We begged Ollie Lane to come back last year. These are admissions that no one is ready to step up. So you have to continue getting portal players who you can count on for 2-3 years. That isn’t sustainable.

We have better tradition, playing time, roster, and NIL than teams that are beating us for these players. Coaching is the only other variable.
This has been explained to damn death. First couple of years were crap as far as recruiting, Tennessee was the biggest dumpster fire in the conference. We’re just now seeing legit results as far as Oline recruiting; going to take time to get those kids up to where they need to be to play in this conference. Portal is kind of the patch till we get there. Next year is probably the first year that you’ll see some of these kids be a factor on the Oline. It’s a problem but not like there’s no reason for it being a problem.

High school OL recruiting changed once Darnell went first round. Before that almost every OL was a project.

People don’t want to admit the 23 class was the first full class the staff had time to recruit with proper runway to build relationships.

They will never admit that 24 will be the first one the staff has he full runway to recruit without the NCAA BS hanging over the program.

Negative people ignore facts.

Never said we didn’t need to use the portal. But if that’s the approach, we need better success. We are offering more $ than teams beating us for these players.

Sorry, but neither you nor I are in those meetings. We can differ on those opinions. But NIL gives the money people more power than ever. Its not a stretch to “assume” they want players in exchange for their contributions.

Yes that kid should have said screw my baby being born in Texas, I want to go play in Tennessee.

People have to understand not every kid is winnable. Not every deal is winnable in business due to factors beyond the salesman’s control.
