Missing Malaysia Airlines Jet

On mobile, can't link but just read an article that is now pointing towards piracy. Mentions that piracy and pilot suicide might be the 2 biggest ideas

Just read something similar. Also mentioned that there's a chance the aircraft could have been landed somewhere, but that it was unlikely.

Okay, stupid question here.

What's the difference in air piracy and hijacking?

Looked it up, according to free dictionary the definition of air piracy is the hijacking or wrongful seizure of an aircraft.

I've honestly never heard the term air piracy until now.

Politically correct term for "hijacking terrorists?"

It took at least the media 7 days to even consider this possibility and they're finally just now talking about it. Yet they're still convinced the plane is at the bottom of the ocean despite everything that's been gathered.

All the experts say aside from the ACARS system which communicates with satellites this huge plane will show up on radar but you won't know it's a plane. All they would have to have done is scout out an airstrip that is remote/rural and long enough to land and take-off from.

It's not as far fetched as they are making it out to be, imo.

I associate hijacking with a use of force to reroute the plane to a different destination.

Piracy is the use of force to steal something (cargo or the plane).

Malaysian PM: Jet Search Widens to Large New Areas - NBC News

Malaysia’s prime minister on Saturday said the search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 had widened to two large corridors as far north as the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan border, based on more satellite data about the plane's movements.

Those corridors are from northern Thailand to the border of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, and from Indonesia to the Southern Indian Ocean, Prime Minister Najib Razak said at a press conference.

“The investigation team is making further calculations which will indicate how far the aircraft may have flown after the last point of contact," he said. "This will help us to refine the search.”

The last confirmed communication between the plane and a satellite was at 8:11 a.m. Malaysian time on Saturday, March 8 (8:11 p.m. EDT Friday, March 7). The plane, originally headed to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur, did turn back as it approached Vietnamese waters. Prior to that, the aircraft’s computer-assisted reporting system was disabled and then its transponder was turned off.

Those experts must not be so "experty".
The way surveillance radars work is that they scan the sky and process RF returns which are either aircraft or weather. Modern radar systems (anything in the last 30 years) can differentiate between weather and aircraft (polarization). Any known stationary objects, mountains, buildings, etc, are ignored in the system. This is known as background clutter and the returns are mapped out in a geocensor map. All returns are bumped against this map and if stationary it's ignored.

Secondary surveillance is the beacon system. Even with the interrogator turned off in the aircraft the beacon system will still bounce RF off the plane and receive a response back. With the transponder off it will just not receive the identity code and/or altitude. These radars often work in conjunction and use the returns to develop radar reinforced targets on an Air Traffic Controllers scope.

Now what is fishy is "losing radar contact". There are a few ways that happens. 1. Plane crashes/lands 2. Plane drops low in altitude (like tree height) 3. The plane hovers over the absolute top of the radar antenna in the "cone of silence". 4. Plane employs radar jamming which requires knowing the radio frequency of the radar and bombarding it with about 10Megawatts of power or more to overload its receiver.

But who knows what Southeast Asia is using for radars. Do they have long ranges with 250 mile capabilities? Short ranges with just 60 miles? Are there coverage holes? Who knows. I would call that part of the worlds airspace system pretty suspect.

I can only provide the information I know from being in the FAA and working on said RADAR systems. Most of our systems are 30 years old..so who knows what they are using in that part of the world.

-edit-

You might hear people talk about ADS when going over long distances without radar coverage. This is just the GPS guidance system. The FAA want's to make that the main source of surveillance and shudder the ground RADAR's. It too can be turned off.

Here are the FAA owned RADAR's (weather and surveillance) in the USA. This does not include a ton of Air Force RADAR's that feed the FAA information. The USA pretty much has every inch covered..pretty much.

I don't know what Malaysia/Vietnam uses but I would guess its really, really old.

Tomato toe-mah-toe, it amounts to the same thing.

A hijacker might say, "take me to Beirut," and upon arrival, exit the plane. He's just using it for transportation

Whereas, the pirate might take the plane to Beirut, and using the crazy bomb scenario, load a bomb, and fly it into London. He's stealing the plane.

He's still a terrorist in the end.

People's lives are impacted either way and someone is doing it to effect change through threats. It's terrorism. Just a nice way of saying it.

I would think the pirate is stealing it to covert it into a pirate plane and be the scourge the friendly skies.

While as ludicrous as that sounds I can promise people in that part of the world would entertain such a thought.

maybe they were all in on it and decided to chase the comet rather than waiting on it. Were they wearing black Nike's by chance?

Its his (girl) he is 100% responsible for his girl! While in the air.

What make cops suspect a law abiding husband in a wifes murder till he us ruled out?

What makes u not suspect the pilot?

he's a professional with over 20 thousand hours of seat time in the 777

could he have been radicalized? Possibly, but someone with his level of education usually doesn't go full jihad.
