I think that if it is on the ground somewhere, rather than in the water hazard, we know where it is. Just a matter of spreading wild stories while the logistics forvan Entebbe style rescue/recovery operation to be put together.Okay, so let's go hypothetical for a moment and entertain the notion that this plane was successfully stolen and is sitting on an airstrip somewhere. Let's take it a step further and say terrorists plan on using it as a weapon. What's their target? I can't believe it would be anywhere in the continental U.S. Between our satellites and radar, I find it hard to believe they would make it this far without being shot down. Besides all the radar capabilities already discussed, what about NORAD capabilities. As much attention as this has drawn, the U.S. defense will remain on high alert for this type of attack.
So if the target isn't the continental U.S., what are the likely targets? If it's still U.S. interests, are we talking Hawaii, or are our radar and satellite capabilities great enough to quash that?
If it's not U.S. interests, who are the likely targets? India? We know of the discord between India and Pakistan. Russia? Aren't they still fighting Chechnyan(probably mangled that) Muslims. China? They seem to hate all religions? And of course, it's just an assumption that the target would be an anti-Muslim target based on the pilot being Muslim.
Everything is speculation at this point, but the media seems to be picking up steam with the idea this plane landed safely somewhere. That doesn't make it fact, but if the plane did land safely, it's hard not to believe it is being used in a plan to do something sinister.
Somethings to remember. If this plane crashed in the ocean its ULB (underwater locator beacon) will go off and transmit on a specific radio frequency for about a month or more. Aircraft also have one or two (or more ) ELT's (emergency locator transponder). I know they usually have one in the tail, not sure where else. With enough vibration, aka from a crash, a pin pops off and the beacon starts transmitting on a frequency. I think its 121.5/243.0. I don't know specific ranges of these but that's how they will eventually find the plane if it crashed if someone doesn't spot it first.
That is what is odd about this to me..no one has picked up those signals. Those frequencies are usually heavily monitored. Not spotting in on radar makes me think either Southeast/west Asia's radar coverage is awful or someone is being quiet about it.
Oh yeah the ELT/ULB are often inaccessible during flight..ie behind an aircraft panel on the tail or something. They do run on batteries and are supposed to be checked regularly so who knows if that's been done properly or not..
I don't get why someone would would steal a plane, fly it for 6-7 hours then ditch it in the ocean. I mean, the entire thesis is that whoever took it had to be experienced in flying the plane. So how would someone experienced then run out of gas in the middle of nowhere?
If it was stolen/hijacked it has to be on land somewhere. But if so why no word for 10 days ?
So I'm a little uninformed about Indonesia. I know they have al qaeda cells there. are they thinking that is why the plane may have landed there? Would Indonesia not have picked them up on radar? Would the be uncooperative?
So, if there isn't a credible terrorist claim that a particular group or individual is responsible, this isn't terrorism. It can be a deranged individual crashing a plane, but terrorism is a directed effort, not random.
Here is one of my thoughts on this. Someone on the plane forced their way into the cockpit, the pilots knew and reset instruments and headings, the person or persons forcing their way in didn't realize what they had done, then, flew the plane until it ran out of fuel heading in a direction they didn't know they were going......just a thought.
I read or heard somewhere that the water activated beacon has to be on the surface to work......any thoughts?
Which now begs the question of why?
