Missing Malaysia Airlines Jet

Did I hear correctly that the big search planes cost $10,000/hour to operate?

Whatever the rate, with several of those doing eight-hour trips, plus the ships, the cost of the recovery has got to be adding up quickly.

I wonder how long they'll continue spending at this level if nothing is found?

By "searching til hell freezes over", they mean after they realize how ridiculously fruitless and expensive this is, they'll have some dude in a cubicle in the basement of an office building using Google maps to see if he can spot anything suspicious.

Media is saying search teams got "the ping". Planes sleeping with the fishes as I suspected.

Now back to crawling around my attic.

This "ping" thing really puzzles me.

During the end of the Cold War, I used to hear stories about people on submarines having to stay as quiet as possible because of the chance that any unusual or loud noise on the sub would give away their position.

But we can't find a "ping" from a black box until several weeks later? Check that, our submarines in the area can't hear the "splash" of a plane in the area?

You are assuming we had subs in the area.

The south Indian Ocean isn't exactly a going concern strategically for us. For anyone really.

It isnt't a ping..its a radio frequency spurt..it's actually pretty annoying if you've heard it on land..

Breaking News: CNN is breaking away from their regular coverage to concentrate on covering Flight MH370 . It is nice that CNN is finally giving a little attention to this missing plane....

There is 24 hrs till the "Ping" stops

According to whom?

I thought these "pings" could only be detected a short distance (< 10 miles) away? Are we to believe that a Chinese ship just happened to go right over the wreckage? Or that the Australians here the same "ping" 300 miles away?

Not buying it.

???

I'm confused... what exactly is your question?

You replied back to a post about the "ping" stopping and then said this. I'm not following.

Not really a question (unless I'm wrong about how far away the pings can be detected). I'm expressing skepticism about the latest leads.

I don't think anyone has detected anything yet. I think they are basing the estimated death of the black box on the average battery life. I'm sure if they actually heard a ping they would be swarming in that area.

Supposedly the Chinese detected a signal that matches that emitted by black boxes.

BBC News - Malaysia flight MH370: Search ships to verify signals

As for the battery, yes, it's an estimate. It might ping for another week, it might have ceased a week ago, or perhaps it never even worked.

Here's what I've heard from CNN regarding the Black Box pings.
They're only designed to last approx. 30 days from the time of crash. This is somewhat dependent on how the batteries were stored, whether it was hot/cold and humidity. I heard one guy say it can last maybe 10 to 14 additional days thereafter.

The Australian Ocean Shield vessel towing the American made ping detector detected both the black boxes forward and aft ping signatures(which aren't synchronized signatures). They are scanning a 7 mile(in one direction) stretch of ocean and towing the ping detector at a depth of approx. 14,500 feet. Just for the ship to turn around and scan the opposite direction it takes 3 hours because the cable is so long. For them to really narrow the ocean floor area they have to triangulate it(by approaching the pings from 3 different points). Info from the latest Australian press conference

Nobody is confirming the plane is there until some sort of wreckage is visually spotted either floating or sunken and confirmed it's from MH370, period.

CNN's coverage of this has been comical. They've lost a lot of credibility here. I hope the families of the victims haven't been following CNN for credible news on the situation. Because playing with their hopes as they've done through the headlines in return for juiced up ratings is just cruel and inhumane.

Are they still covering it 24/7? I haven't watched them at all in the past couple of weeks.

Someone said it boosted their ratings by 80%. That's not going to hurt business in any way.
From what was being reported Malaysian officials weren't telling the families much of anything and they would even separate the Malaysian families from other passengers families and feed them different info.
They had stopped a good portion of their coverage when Malaysia made it official that it crashed in the Indian ocean. They started covering it even more when the search zone was moved further north. I watch CNN daily just about and haven't seen them report anything misleading on MH370. Don Lemon would take questions from the general public and read them to experts and that might have been where the hoopla came about with black holes and crap.
While the search is interesting I'd like to hear about some other things going on in the news. The Ukraine/Russia thing has gotten almost no coverage in a while on CNN.

Agree 100%. I have considered them the best source for real news stories, not any longer. Since the Boston Bombing coverage Fox has been the most credible news coverage, imo.

I somewhat agree. But I'll give you a "LOL" and " Huh?" in advance before LG enters.
