'24 MO DL Williams Nwaneri (Mizzou commit)

Basically allows Missouri residents that sign with Missouri to be able to receive NIL as soon as they sign with the school.

So Williams could start receiving NIL in December after ESD even though he wont enroll until the summertime for example.

Personally, it's not a gamechanger IMO. So you can receive NIL 6 months earlier, big deal. If he goes to Mizzou it won't be so he can get paid earlier, could be they outbidded everyone else.
Thank you !

Pretty sure it's when they sign. Don't think their collective would be in the business of dishing out money with no "guarantee" of that player playing for their school. But it is Missouri lol.

@Weezer I said Collectives, actually the school and coaches can discuss NIL directly per the Missouri law. No collective is needed. But kid would have to sign first though.

Seems like that would be against the NCAA rules since the money can't come from the coaches or the school. NIL is a real mess. I'm okay with players getting paid for their NIL, but there really does need to be a uniform standard for how this is handled.

Exaxt same thing I thought as well. That goes direct against the NCAA rules but I guess state law would prevail in any legal battle.

If he is an early enrollee, he’ll get money in Jan from all others. 1 month payment to go to a program with zero chance to compete for a champioship?

Right which is why I don't think it's a huge advantage at all nor would be the reason he would go there.

As I pointed out, this was the bill Drinkwitz was pushing through the MO legislature at the same time he was jumping in front of cameras to declare that NIL is evil and his brother in law makes less than some of these players (not true) but he is saving lives. And all like that. Remember?

Sounds like the interpretation is that a MO resident could sign a NLI that binds the school to him but not vice versa and at that point could start getting money.

Absolutely.. Same as if the NCAA tried to bowl ban us. With the TN state law saying that can't happen, the law is greater than the NCAA.

Ultimately NCAA is a national organization and the cases could be moved to federal court. The NIL issue will someday be heard in federal court as some of these collectives are touting tax deducted contributions and that’s where the IRS will step in. I may be wrong but I recall the IRS long ago made contributions with seating, tickets and other perks tied to them non-deductible. I also believe collectives that are part of the university or athletic dept will eventually run into TitleIX issues when an unbalanced amount of university money goes to male athletes.

Monday draws near. I really hope Nwaneri picks the good guys. He would be a huge star here. It really seems like the superior choice.
Well, lets drill down to each team.

Oklahoma - makes most sense. Program is headed for dark times with a really really questionable head coaching hire. Couldve gotten an actual head coach, instead they got Venables. Sinking ship.

Missouri - uhh no. This is where careers go to die.

Tennessee - upward trajectory, lots of playing time, coaching stability, great DL coach, above average collective.

I mean, logically none of it makes any sense. Unless its just distance to home and nothing else matters? In that case, enjoy playing in the expanded high school stadium, in the cold, with people sitting on painted white rocks with bushes arranged to say 'Missouri'.

OU is still recruiting well—especially on the DL. They really feel like they’re getting him here. They were saying yesterday that even if he commits to Missouri, they think he will ultimately sign with OU.

Nothing would make me happier than to get this guy to Tennessee.

OU is using the excuse that they had a depleted roster last year, but to me that’s a weak excuse. Tennessee had a more depleted roster when Heupel came in and we were consistently competitive. Hell, last year the roster was still really thin in spots and look what we did.

I honestly think the vibe out here is more concerned hope than anything. It’s hard to tell if it’s wishful thinking or not on my part, but I really think they are going to be mediocre and lose some good players to the transfer portal over the next few years.

If they turn this into a business, the university will sit the revenue sports up under their own business umbrella and the non rev sports under their own P&L and then title IX will not apply because they will each be a profit/loss business

The campus is not bad for what it is. However, I will say that going from walking the UT campus for several years to walking that campus for several years, I was always shocked at how paltry the sports facilities were.

I used to park in their stadium and walked across the south end zone every day. It always felt tiny to me. Their practice field was basically just a big lawn surrounded by hedges in the middle of campus.

Plus, and this is coming from someone who grew up in the humidity of East Tennessee, the August heat here is almost unbearable at times. I don’t know how those guys make it through Fall camp.

Not necessarily. I could see an appellate court ruling the law un-Constitutional by limiting a player's right to only making NIL early by signing with a state school. Not convinced the state can legally put a cap on that. It's infringing the rights of the players if they don't want to attend a state school.

Probably several thousand Tennessee fans who subscribe to his every word like its manna in the desert.

He's skiing behind his boat that he parks at his lakehouse this weekend. Meanwhile, ill be washing the minivan.

That's who cares.
Imagine if that money went to Spyre instead? Fans can influence where recruits go instead of just talking about it.
