'24 MS DL Kamarion Franklin (Ole Miss commit)

Well by golly if it annoys you.... someone needs to call Heupel on the carpet.

They're going after talented guys. I suspect their "board" is full of them and many are being pursued more quietly because they haven't garnered recruiting site attention. Doesn't mean they aren't just as talented... just not in the limelight. And if you are Heupel and you have a group of say 5 or 6 guys on your board that you think are pretty close in talent but 2 of them aren't "well known"... wouldn't it behoove you not to be too noisy?

But again... they're pursuing talented guys. Those guys aren't as unique as some think.

Many times over the past couple of years Heupel has taken commitments from some obscure recruit. Leacock was kind of like that. A 3* that not many people paid attention to until the Vols "discovered him".

If UT doesn't get Franklin or any of these other guys then one of two things will happen. One, UT will push harder for the other guys in that "bucket" of players in that position group. Two, UT will start looking harder at portal guys.

There might have been a time when panic over a recruiting class was a little more justified. Not any more. The portal gives great coaches... and NIL the opportunity to fill holes.
That’s a good point on transfer portal. It just has seemed we “lead” for a lot of guys then all the sudden we don’t and they go somewhere else. Just hoping we can close some more of these out. Still love the class so far

Just remember that everyone "loses" more often than they win. Saban, Day, and Smart win at a higher % than everyone else but they probably "win" less than 50% in recruiting if the truth were known.

Your last phrase is key. You have to step back and look at what you got once in a while rather than what you don't get.

I agree with that. And I’m very pleased with how we have done in recruiting and on the field, but if we want to be elite we have to close on more of these. Hopefully that becomes a trend

I do this quite a bit already. That's why I don't get upset as much with recruiting.
I look at the whole team and what is needed, vs the amount of 4 stars we're pulling in

I have said this many times. UT needs talent. That talent can take several different paths to arrive at UT.

For years we've been treated to National Signing Day "wins" only to see disappointment on the field. The Vols have to "close" with the right guys... and that is not necessarily the guys loved by the recruiting sites. I have no doubt that Franklin is a good prospect. I also have no doubt that there's a kid out there somewhere being ignored with a 2/3* label who will develop and be a high draft pick at DE/DT in 3-5 years. They're out there every single year. You have to find them or else talk them into transferring to you through the portal.

I believe that this staff knows talent and potential better than any since Fulmer. I am certain they develop better than any UT staff in my lifetime.... and I'm kind of old. They took what 247 labeled the 19th most talented roster in the country last fall and beat #1, #5, #8, and #14. I feel fairly comfortable saying that if they get into the top 15... top 12... they'll be competitive with pretty much anyone.

What I'm saying is while it would be nice to get this guy in the boat closing on more of "these" isn't the only route to success so there's no reason for panic.

I think you nailed it here...and this is why I'm less concerned with recruiting than I have been in as long as I can remember...

I believe very strongly that this staff can take recruiting classes that are in the #10-15 range and consistently beat anyone with it...and if we stack class after class in the #6-15 range then we will consistently win 10+ games in the regular season which will have us in the new 12 team playoff year after year....and if we make the playoff we will get on a heater one year, have a good draw in the playoff bracket and end up winning it all...

All of this handwringing on here about our recruiting rank is just silly IMO

We are going to need more than one successful season to start landing elite classes.

Maybe in two different ways. One, recruits will take the program even more seriously. Two, the recruiting sites will take Heupel's evals more seriously. Both things will contribute to getting more "elite" classes according to the recruiting sites.

At this point with how it’s gone with other recruits at the position, he might legitimately be a need. Hope we can bring him home.

Clemson's 2016 title was won with the #16 class (2015), #9 class (2014), and #15 class (2013) and #20 class (2012). average: #15
when they won again in 2018, they were working with: #16 (2017), #11 (2016 after they won the NC), #16 (2015), and #9 (2014) classes. for the average of #13.

you can build success up without top ranked classes, building upon good years and development.

we finally have development, and we have had our first successful year. We keep stacking classes around #10 and keep them intact, we will be able to win.

our problem is we have lacked development and we have watched our highly ranked classes disappear to the transfer portal with all the coaching changes.

meh. I dont like how hes carried himself.

We need DL but RG can turn a diamond out of a piece of coal.

This is a position where we will find someone late, some kid n ATL who's known RG's son's HS coach.

And will blow up.

Zero concern from me. Dline and Oline are the hardest to project from highschool to college. There are around 5 can’t miss prospects for both sides of the ball. I’d love to grab one and I think we need to grab them if we are going to compete for championships. But I’m not worried.
