'24 MS DL Kamarion Franklin (Ole Miss commit)

Lol thinking of the short term benefit
The kid is from Mississippi. Putting some big $$$$ in front of him right now is hard to pass up. I'm guessing he lives with his grandmother, since she has to give the stamp of approval. That usually doesn't speak to having a stable upbringing financially.

Great perspective. What recently happened with Carnell Tate's mom is a reminder that some of these kids have rough home lives, some by bad families and some by geography. Do I want Kam? Without a doubt. Do I blame him for getting life-changing money for his family? Not in the slightest.

Who are we kidding? The majority of this board would choose life changing money as well.

That's true-i don't know how much more Miami is offering though. I would take up to a 40k discount to play for Tennessee and believe in RGs track record to get people to the league, knowing my family wasn't dependent on the money. Some don't have that luxury.

Life changing money is usually an illusion. If you give someone that’s crappy with money a million dollars they will piss it away in a short time. Might be able to change your living situation with NIL money but most these kids aren’t getting money that will set them up for life unless they’re smart with it.

that's fine. if i'm on this staff, i'd rather find that out now. and i realize this is going to come off like fanboy/redneck pride, but to me it's just how i see things....but i'm not sure building a roster around kids that NIL is #1 on their list is the type of roster i want. at some point, i think you have to actually want to go to the school for some other reason than NIL. i think you'll see rosters built that way have a lot of transfer portal activity (aTm for ex), and i think you just lose something as a program, if that's how you go about it.

and the kids that go that route, i think they ultimately find out how those relationships work out. and i think to some degree, you run the risk of having emloyer/employee relationships under that model.

in any event, assuming that's what happens here, if that's what motivates him in this decision, cool. i think that simply means he's not a fit here.

but i get how that will sound to some people, as some type of false bravado. i felt the same way when Francis picked 'em last year. some will say this is a miss. i might be more inclined to say we maybe dodged a bullet, not because he's not talented. he certainly is. but fit matters too, especially when your not showcasing NIL to be at the forefront of your recruiting process, rather as an enhancement to it....which i think is what the point is anyway.

There is no amount of money that is life changing if you don’t handle it wisely.

The biggest mistake for some now that this is open to all Feds will get there part that is why they are happy with NIL because all the taxes they will collect that they missed on when deals were under table. In CHRIST Alone

Not saying this specifically about Franklin, but if all you've known is poverty in the hood, then an 1800sq ft house in the suburbs and $100,000 a year is life changing. Is it short sighted? Yes it is, but life changing money is subjective to the individual

I mean you’re not wrong but it’s the other part that eats these kids. They’ve been told so many things about what they’re going to be in the future. They never prepare for it that doesn’t work out. Like if you’re an elite athlete but you blow all that money bc you’ve been promised making it to the league then you suffer a career ending injury. Kids are dumb with money, generally think they’re invincible. Programs need to prepare kids better to manage their financial futures. A lot of nfl players are broke as well when they retire.

I keep wondering with this kid about AP’s comment about recruits this class throwing people off. I’m holding out hope this Miami noise is just that.

A few years back I was offered two positions at the same time. One was in an urban/suburban area requiring us to relocate to a different region of the country. The other was a move of about 60 miles to a town of 25K. The first job offered roughly 25% more. It more than covered the difference in cost of living. Both were good offers. I chose the 2nd because it offered a lifestyle that I favored.

If Franklin is being offered a "good" NIL by both schools and it comes down to just the money... then that's a pretty good reason to let him go. It isn't likely a case of UT insulting him and Miami offering a lot more or else UT would already be out.
