Mullen Out

I hope like hell Mullen stays out of the SEC. I still think he’s a very good coach and I would not look forward to playing him. Virginia Tech may be a great fit.
So what’s the word on the Gator boards? Are there any legit players? Or is everyone speculating on the usual suspects of Freeze, Kiffin,,, etc?

Gainesville to/from flight watch, yes. Suicide watch, no.

Also, I was convinced FL had arrived even before the Bama game. I thought that at several points during Mullen’s era, and I wasn’t alone in that. Which makes the cliff-dive over the last 7-8 weeks even more stunning.

I'm still not sure firing Mullen was the right move. Sure, most people here (and probably most people on the Florida boards) think that, but this year looks more like an aberration in Mullen's career than anything.

That said, I've never seen a team collapse quite like that. Was it really just Grantham or was the whole thing unsalvageable at this point? I honestly don't know the answer.

Feel like Florida was in a very difficult spot with Mullen. May be the wrong move to fire him, but he made it nearly impossible not to fire him and it felt like he quit.

When I was saying that Florida had a higher standard than Tennessee I meant it as a compliment. I’m wrong about a lot of things. Seems like I might have been wrong about that too.
The complimentary part. That high standard is chewing up coaches as fast as we do.
We're infamously hard on our head coaches...Stephen Orr Spurrier does no wrong and walks on water in the eyes of the Gator nation, but he's the only one...I literally had a friend text me right after the 09' SECC that we needed to "cut bait with Meyer and go get Mack Brown to keep this thing from sliding off the rails"...We can be that kinda toxic...And I'm sure it has a negative impact on whoever is here at the time.

If I remember correctly, UT caught a raft from UF fans for firing Butch after a fairly recent SEC championship appearance, then fired McElwain a couple of weeks later after a press conference appearance they didn't like. Now, Mullen after a recent SEC championship appearance. UF may be joining the oasis UT has found itself in since firing Fulmer, Karma is a tough thing to deal with.

Please no.

I must have slept through that championship appearance by Butch. I think you mean Fulmer.

UF had no choice but to fire Mullen. For whatever reason, he basically packed it in early this season and rather than leave on his own, just decided to force UF to fire him.

Butch never made an SEC championship appearance; he pissed his pants when he saw Muschamp across the field in Columbia.

OK, correct, I missed that detail - but he have a 9-4 record and came in 2nd in the East in 2016, then was fired the next season. The rest of the statement still stands, UF fans were all over us for firing him the season after, then fired McElwain for a bad press conference within a few weeks.

Are you talking about here or in general? I don't remember hardly anyone blaming us for firing Jones after the way he self-destructed in 2017. Mullen's crash and burn seems to be pretty similar.

Damn I feel like I have heard and seen that before…

I would say Napier is a near lock for LSU. There really aren’t a ton of great candidates out there especially with LSU and USC open. Do you take a flyer on Chadwell? Maybe Aranda at Baylor? Dave Clawson is a good coach but he would never get the time to build it. Does Matt Rhule want to come back to college? Does Luke Fickell leave Cincinnati? I don’t think firing Mullen for an up and coming coordinator is going to excite the fan base

Nah, we are the toxic fanbase. When we fire a coach a couple of seasons after winning 9 games we are impatient. When Florida fires a coach the year after winning the East they are dedicated to excellence. That’s the narrative.

Botch's downfall was the 2016 season. The 2017 season was simply the fruit from how 2016 went.

Sure we went 9-4 in 2016, but that is kind of smoke and mirrors. Struggled mightily against Appy St. VT being unable to throw the ball without it being intercepted saved him vs VT. A HUGE comeback was needed to even beat Florida that year. The Georgia game, don't even get me started. The Dobbs Nail Boot should have never even been necessary.

Botch could have just as easily put up a 6-6 record in 2016 with quite possibly the most talented team we have fielded since 2001. Only a few VERY lucky breaks kept that from happening.

Hell no to Chadwell, Aranda is a lukewarm win if it goes that direction, and I think Clawson is a very hard pass...The only two names that really have a lot of buzz are Nape and Kiffin and I think as a whole we'd be happy with either one.

Kiffin leaving Ole Miss to take the Florida job seems highly unlikely and Napier is going to be the top choice for LSU as well. UF may very well get one of them but this is going to be a very difficult coaching landscape imho

Right... cause Ole Miss sucks
My quote was in regards to the bed wetting concerns on here that Kiffin would turn the Florida job into a never ending nightmare for Tennessee fans for the rest of our lives. I think that’s giving him a wee bit too much credit. He just isn’t scary at all to me, and if there are people who are really that afraid of him, then yeah-I don’t even know what to say to them.

Kiffin or Freeze to Florida. And it don’t matter anyway regardless who they hire cause we can’t beat them with their great coaches or awful ones

We can and will. It's not 1999 anymore.

The whole "we can't beat Florida" thing was largely a Fulmer thing. Since then, we have sucked and could hardly beat anyone, let alone Florida.

I know that they also sucked some of those years, and even in our down phase we should have won a few more, but the post-Fulmer era is different than the SOS/Urban days.

We may not beat them next year, but with this staff we will play up to our potential.

Claw should stay at Wake he’d be swallowed up on a big stage

Aranda goes back to LSU

Fickle wants OSU or nothing it seems

Napier or Chadwell could mean trouble for this league
