From 247:
Early tidbits on the coaching search
As we continue to get more information, we'll be able to narrow down the focus a little bit to the candidates most likely in the hunt. Keep in mind Florida is expert at putting out misinformation from its end, so as much as possible we do our best to contact other sources in the network to find out what the conversation is like on the other end for potential candidates. Here are some early notes that we've been able to gather.
-- Dan Mullen likely isn't very high on any list. He was far from a fan favorite, almost universally disliked at Florida from the Auburn 2007 game until the LSU game in 2008. Mullen has already made comments this year bringing up the fact that Florida fans didn't always like him when he was here the first time, so there'd be some old wounds to get over even if Florida was interested. In any case, the Associated Press' Mark Long also believes that Mullen won't get the first call, he tweeted on Sunday. GatorBait.net has spoken to sources that have confirmed there is some friction between Mullen and the Florida administration from his first tenure in Gainesville that would likely impede any interest in him.
-- Todd Graham at Arizona State will be a candidate to follow in the event that Jeremy Foley doesn't already have somebody lined up and in his sights. As far back as in the immediate aftermath of the Missouri game, sources in the 247Sports network indicated that Graham would have high interest in both the Florida and Michigan jobs should they come open. Graham is an intriguing candidate because he's had success everywhere he's gone in a short timeframe. While he's a defensive coach, he has a track record of hiring outstanding offensive coordinators, and if he could bring his staff with him, it's easy to envision him having major success at Florida early on.
-- Mike Shanahan's name also surfaced around the same timeframe, with Wolverine247 here on the network reporting that Shanahan would be interested in both the Florida and Michigan jobs should they come open. Shanahan's name has been floated, but it's unclear whether that is due to legitimate interest in the jobs or simply to gain some buzz. Shanahan obviously has the pedigree as an NFL head coach for 23 years, but he hasn't been in the college game since 1983, when he last worked as the offensive coordinator at Florida. Shanahan has ties to Gainesville and has been around the city at various points in recent years, but how he'd adapt to the college game at this point is anyone's guess.
-- Steve Spurrier can basically be ruled out of the coaching search. Spurrier has never been one to mince words, and he all but said he flat out won't take the Florida job if called. Spurrier wants to see the Gators get someone who will be around at least 10 years.
-- Rich Rodriguez is another name you can likely move way down the list. Though he fits the bill as an offensive coach with experience, a handful of outlets have indicated he wouldn't be a good fit for the job due to past NCAA troubles at Michigan, including ESPN's Travis Haney and the Gainesville Sun's Pat Dooley. That doesn't come as a huge surprise after Muschamp spent the last four years with a heavy emphasis on cleaning up the culture around the program.
-- Hugh Freeze is very comfortable at Ole Miss, according to sources in the 247Sports network. Sources also tell 247Sports that Ole Miss would be prepared to enter a bidding war to retain Freeze if necessary.
