I wasn't discounting what he did at Ga. Southern. However, in the interest of full disclosure, I think it's fair to point out that he didn't build the program there.

Good call Hat. I will always contend that Cry-baby Dooley owes Russell big time for the Junkyard Dogs. Between Erk and Walker they made Dooley the ultimate hero. Erk Russell should be the governor of GA.

Johnson didn't build the program at Ga Southern..... he re-built it!

He didn't rebuld anything. The Eagles have only missed the I-AA playoffs 5 times since '85. They haven't had any need to rebuild. They've never really fallen.

They were 4-7 the season before he arrived.

You're about to construct an argument as to why a certain SEC team located in East Tennessee should make a change. If one bad season makes it time to rebuild, then it's time to get the hard hats out in Knoxville.

Construct it how you like. I thought we were talking about Paul Johnson and not Phil Fulmer (there is entire thread devoted to the Fulmer subject if you would like to discuss him)

Georgia Southern is not so worried about making the playoffs, its how far they advance. Simply not making the playoffs is not an option. The season in question (1996) was Frank Ellwood's first and last at Georgia Southern.

Ga Southern had won back-to-back National Championships in '89 and '90. Within 6 seasons they were 4-7. In Paul Johnson's 5 seasons at Ga Southern, they won the conference title 5 times. They won back-to-back National Championships in '99 and '00. They reached the National Championship game in '98, '99, '00. They reached the semifinals in '01 and the quarterfinals in '97.

The past 2 seasons for Ga Southern have been rough. They did not make the playoffs in '04 and they lost in the first round in '05.

Paul Johnson's winning percentage is by far the best in school history. (0.861)

Gee, a program that demands excellence. That's refreshing. By the way, they also won the National Championship in '85 and '86.

Russell and Walker should have the stadium renamed for them. Supposedly Russell accepted an offer from Vince Dooley to become the head coach at UGA and sometime during his drive from Statesboro and Athens the higher ups nixed the hire completely in favor of Ray Goff (great call on that one). Rather than rant and rave, Russell took the classy route, called a press conference, announced that he had no intention of being a candidate for the job, had a few choice words for Dooley in private, got in his car and went home to Statesboro.

True, but the program really fell off for a few years in the in the mid 90s. Tim Stowers started looking like Bill Battle and Ellwood was in over his head.

The history of the SEC would have been very different had Russell gotten the UGA job.

The triple option definitely would have stuck around a little longer.

UGA wouldn't have wallowed in mediocrity for over a decade. UT certainly wouldn't have run off the '92-'99 winning streak against the Dawgs. The chances of Jamal Lewis, Cosey Coleman, and Deon Grant all wearing orange wouldn't have been real good. I could go on and on.

I tend to agree, but at the same time, a guy like Eric Zeier might have ended up at Auburn where the offense suited him better and beaten GA every year. You never know.

I think Erk was smart enough to have made adjustments that would have showcased a guy like Zeier. Slightly off topic, I think Zeier is arguably the most underrated player in SEC history.

I agree with that. The mere fact that he made Ray Goff look good for a couple of years is pretty amazing. Goff was a good man, but he might have been more in over his head than any coach I've ever seen.

He was the football equivalent of Wade Houston.

I would be careful using that analogy. Its only a matter of time before someone makes a similar analogy with Manning and Fulmer.

It doesn't work. The Current Head Football Coach at The University of Tennessee-Knoxville won a National Championship with Tee Martin.

I don't like The Current Head Football Coach at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, but I will give him credit where it's due.

Whether you like CPF or not, I think once a coach wins 10 games with 4 different QBs, people pretty much stop making analogies like that.

it just occured to me...you never say CPF's name....always the current head coach....i guess kind a like how Gerry Dinardo would never call UT by it's name, just that shool to the East....nice. :p

and i agree with all that was said about Goff....nicest guy....wish he was still at UGA....

Come on now Hat, that defense was amazing.

It was special teams, ball control, field position and defense that year.....

Oh no, we were a lil' 11, aka big 10, team.........................

How many points did that defense give up to Syracuse? The offense saved them that day. The offense carried their weight. If I'm going to rip The Current Head Football Coach at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville when things are in poor condition, consistency and fairness mandate I credit him for the good times.
