Nathan Peterman, The Forgotten QB

You're comparing Peyton throwing for 492 ydas and the team finding a way to lose to Peterman turning the ball over 4 times in less than a half?

:bottom:

I am referring to the 1997 game when Manning was a senior and presumed to be the number 1 overall pick in the draft and had a bad game plain and simple.

As I have clarified in later posts I am not comparing Peterman to Manning but just the fact that some of our very best has struggled in the swamp. While I agree that the teams Manning faced were championship winning teams the crowd can still be very intimidating to a QB making his first start. I do not know if Peterman will be a good QB or a bad one but I will not allow one game to define if he is or not.

I'm a huge Peyton fan, but he didn't walk on water, sorry. I may be wrong, but I think he threw 3 or 4 int in that Florida loss. Those UT teams of that era played for championships also. He wasn't surrounded by scrubs playing against elite players

I do not remember him throwing that many picks but you are correct in both 95 and 97 we were loaded in talent and we were probably favored in both games. In 1995 the defense could not stop their offense in the second half and not sure who the RB was but I believe he had 2 crucial fumbles.

I think he started the 97 game with a pick six to Lawrence Wright.

I stand corrected. It was in Knoxville 96 when he had the picks. My bad

Football 'fun' again for Tennessee Vols' Nathan Peterman

Nice story on Peterman. Gotta give him credit for hanging in and working his butt off to improve. Says he is on his way to becoming the strongest QB in program history. Studies film like crazy and throws with the receivers and is trying to remember to have fun playing the game. Good for him. I'm sure going thru the experience at Fla will make him mentally tougher.

I've been noticing in the player interviews I read that the players use some of the same phrases as CBJ (NP said "strides"). Seems the mentality of working "the process" is permeating the entire squad. In other words they have bought in and a new determination and way of thinking has taken hold in Big Orange Land. GBO

I was excited about the Peterman start at the start of the UF game. Was disappointed that he did not play better. Does anyone know at what point he was injured? I thought it was fairly early in the game, and he kept playing without telling the coaches until it became obvious that he could not even grip the ball?

My admiration for Peterman runs deep for his perserverance and determination to work harder and improve himself instead of taking the easy way out. That's a character trait that will pay dividends for him long after football.

R u guys serious? Dude choked at fla n u can cover up for him n say he was injured but he choked.. Even running the base off..

He may have talent but most good qbs don't get an oppt n blow it. Make 1 or 2 mistakes sure but choke like that n he is not going to win many games..or come back n be an above avg qb during a game. Sorry

Worley or Dobbs is our best chance..

IMO...

Peterman didn't choke you knucklehead! :bash:

He was hurt stayed in when he shouldn't ...... bad judgment but no choke.

If he gets another shot you'll be cheering for him after he drives us down the field for a touchdown. :yahoo: :fireworks:

Yea he got hurt early in the first when he hit the top of a defender's helmet on his follow through. Similar to Bray's injury a few years ago and exactly what happened with Worley late last year. Tore the ligament in his thumb.

Thus, much of his bad play against UF could be said to have been affected by the injury, correct?

You know if CBJ was willing to start the guy against UF at the swamp, he must like the guy>>>>>

Does anyone know what drive during the first? Would be interesting to go back and look at his stats pre and post injury and how many INT's/ fumbles were after the injury?

It wasn’t supposed to go this way. When Justin Worley, Nathan Peterman and Joshua Dobbs met with the media to kick off fall camp last week, Peterman might as well have been a ghost. Everyone focused on Worley and Dobbs, the two QBs who were supposed to battle it out for the starting job throughout August, and largely ignored Peterman.

And that was probably justifiable. Peterman’s lone start last year was unforgettable for all the wrong reasons. His final stat line: 4/11 for 5 yards with two interceptions, two fumbles (one on a handoff exchange and one on a sack) and one broken thumb in a half of action on the road against the Gators.

Yet, after nine practices, Peterman, not Dobbs, is the one currently pushing Worley for snaps – even earning first-team reps earlier this week.

“I think Nate Peterman really took some really important steps in moving forward today and so did Justin Worley,” Butch Jones said about his quarterbacks after Saturday’s scrimmage.

While Worley has been getting the vast majority of first-team reps, Peterman has surpassed Dobbs as the No. 2 quarterback. In fact, Peterman was the most accurate QB during open portions of practice this week and consistently connected with receivers on deep balls – an area Worley and Dobbs have struggled mightily.

“I feel like I’m always making strides,” Peterman said in regards to his accuracy. “But I always feel like I’ve got to get better. You’re never there – never arrived – so I’m always trying to get better.

“I feel a lot more comfortable and I think everybody is feeling a lot more comfortable in knowing their assignments. It frees them up to go and make some big plays because they’re not worried about their assignments so much…The whole offense is getting so much better because we’re developing comfort in the offense.”

Of the three scholarship QBs on the roster, only Peterman has shown significant growth since spring practice. He’s had consistent zip on his passes and, after a devastating performance in his only start last year, is playing with confidence. His development hasn’t gone unnoticed.

“He’s looking great. Nate is one of the hardest workers, but no one knows that,” Vol sophomore receiver Josh Smith said after Saturday’s scrimmage. “He stays after it. He’s always in the film room – always in there. He’s improving every day, honestly. It’s day and night from last year.

“It [the Florida game] took a toll on him. He tells me every day he’s working and I expect that from Nate…now he has a lot of motivation because everyone was down on him. I want the best for him. I know exactly what he’s working for and I’m proud of him.”

The coaching staff needs someone to push Worley, who will be the starter unless someone steps up and takes the job from him, and an inconsistent Dobbs hasn’t been able to do so. Peterman, once a forgotten man, has been one of the most surprising players of camp thus far. Remember, he pushed Worley last August and finally beat him out heading into the Florida game. Through nine practices, Worley looks much more like the player Peterman beat out than the one who led the Vols to victory over South Carolina. And Peterman looks nothing like the QB we saw last year – he looks significantly better.

“My confidence is always high,” Peterman said after Saturday’s scrimmage. “As a quarterback you have to have a high confidence level or else you’re not going to be very effective. I always try to stay confident in my abilities and go out there and have fun and play.”

As the Vol QB race heads into its second full week of fall camp, don’t sleep on a confident Peterman – he’s the only QB on the roster playing the best ball of his career.

Forgotten QB, Peterman, Pushing for Playing Time | RTI

He's not been forgotten by team Peterman! Good grief give it a rest already. If he's good enough to start or play CBJ and staff are aware! He's not running for team president!

Really can't believe y'all are comparing Peyton playing well and the team falling short to what we some from Peterman in that half.

Also those late 90's florida teams won championships. Last years florida team went 4-8

Before they suffered a ton of injuries that Florida D might have been the best in the nation.

And for the record... I love Peyton as much as anyone on here but he was miserable in some of those Florida games.

It makes me shudder that he may even step on the field again, but hey, I don't care who plays QB as long as they win...

Shouldn't last year's OLine of such high caliber, talent and experience, been able to keep Peterman off his butt for at least the 1st Quarter? He was a redshirt freshman, they were 4 seniors and a junior and they couldn't keep the florida Dline out of the backfield.

Sort of like when Tony Robinson went down and Daryl Dickey came in...except the complete opposite. The OLine knew he would need time and they gave it to him.

(it also helped that the Defense was very good...)

We put the Florida game on the starting QB and as the leader he should shoulder much of the blame, but that game was a fiasco and everyone owns a big part of that loss.

I will be on pins and needles too. If it's Peterman, so be it. We just need to put the best we got on thefield. Kid has worked as hard as anyone so I hope it pays off.

Dear Mouthbreathers:

I know none of you have ever botched an opportunity because you're not really good at anything except eating cheetos in Mom's basement. So in the spirit of goodwill to even the lowest common denomenator I will break this down for ya all science like:

Kid screwed up, big time. Rather than go cry in a corner he worked his butt off to improve. That's what happens when you have talent and work hard... you get better.

Is he good enough to win in the SEC? Time will tell. But consider this... if you judged a certain former starting UT QB off one start in The Swamp you'd have made a massive mistake.

I hope your wives/significant others don't judge you only on your worst moments.

For the sake of accuracy, Peyton was outstanding his first start at Florida....326 yds passing, 2 tds, no ints, had 37 pts on the board in the 3rd qtr. Jay Graham and Nilo Sylvan's fumbles and UTs pathetic defense that day lost the game. Just sayin.
