Nathan Peterman, The Forgotten QB

I'm glad that he is a Vol, but it's strange that a four star QB from Florida doesn't get offered by any of the big three in that state, and his only instate offer was from Florida International, not even UCF offered him a scholarship. UT was the only SEC team to offer. Why didn't a player rated as high as Peterman get any other SEC offers? Why was Cincy his next best offer?

No one else wanted to recruit against Butch Jones. It's obvious.

What would you do if he got picked as the starting QB?
Eat some crow with a bottle of hot sauce. I don't hate the kid and wish him well but he looked like a whipped pup against a 4-8 Florida team. You can't entirely blame his hand on decisions his head made. I love Butch but he didn't do him any favors by leaving him in. It was obvious he was struggling but he left him in anyway.

Half? Fully 87.2% of all threads are about Peterman and trying to convince me he's really good.

They aren't trying to convince you ...but those with an open mind. Fortunately, wiser people realize a four-star QB should not be banished for life based on an untimely freshman start that went haywire.

Ok..... this needs to stop. I know, the idea is fun, the unlikely hero that's going to rise from the ashes and save our program, but I'm sorry, that's just not realistic. Peterman may be much more talented than the Florida game would lead us to believe, but Justin Worley is the QB for The University of Tennessee.

Worley has the experience, he has the arm, he has the first win over a Top 10 team in the last 3 starting QB's, he spent his summer in camps. I'm happy for Peterman, it takes serious determination to bounce back like he has, but he's securing his spot at #2 right now. He will be a sound back-up, but he has done nothing on the field in a game setting that should lead anyone to believe he belongs there more than Worley. This is Worley's year, Peterman will be the man to beat in 2015.

Solid post. I've been one to get excited bout the Peterman hype, but you talked me back down to reality. People just want to think that we have some stud on our roster that just needs to be given the opportunity to shine. That is leading to this Peterman hype.

Yes they are. And for the record, I don't want Peterman "banished". In fact, as I've said in other threads, I admire Nathan for his attitude, perseverance and work ethic. He's to be commended for how he responded after the Florida game and he's obviously an asset to the roster, to the program.

My only point is that the evidence, the only data that we have for how each of these QBs and how they might play this year in live games is how they performed on that stage last year.

Worley was bad at times but improved to the point where we nearly beat #6 Georgia and we did beat #11 SCar. Dobbs showed some flashes of athleticism and potential but we would all agree he has a long way to go. We all know the story with Peterman .... 24 plays as a starter vs Florida.... 4 yds, 4 turnovers for the offense.

Bottom line for me is I'm a fan of Tennessee ,in the grand scheme, a helluva lot more than I an a fan of any one player. I want the best QB that gives UT the best chance to win and I refuse to believe, at this point, that the guy who has strung together 4-5 good practices after being a "complete non factor" in the Spring (quote from Hubbs) and has on his resume that Florida performance, is that guy given our other choices, namely Worley.

If I'm proven wrong and Peterman is named the starter then I'll eat my crow and become a huge Peterman fan and hope he's able to redeem himself because I want my team to win.

The point that you made that I like a lot is the fact that he has hung in there. He could have easily tucked his tail and run away like Riley did. But he held his head high and never stopped working. There's a lot to be said for that kind of character. He won't play in the NFL (unless he explodes from here on out), but those qualities will serve him well in the future.

I'm pulling for the best QB who gives us the best chance to win this year. All I have to go off of at this point was the QB play from last year.

Worley was bad at times but showed improvement and good game management skills vs Georgia and SCar. Dobbs showed flashes vs Mizzou and Ky, was more athletic and showed some promise and potential IMO. Peterman was the worst QB I've seen in 40 years of watching college football. That pretty much sums it up for me.

I don't have confidence in any QB on campus right now until they can show a little more than what they have

Good grief! Worst QB to ever put on an orange jersey. Bar none. Name just one QB that's been worse. The kid tried but he just ain't got it. I really hope he does well but I just can't see all this Peterman love all of a sudden.

His 1/2 against FL was just miserable to watch. I also challenge you to find me a QB with a worse 1/2 of football in any color jersey. We have a really good, not great but serviceable, QB in Worley. He will be the starter. Everything else is just coach speak.

Before Peterman broke his hand he was actually making some good plays against one of the best defenses in the country. Also there were multiple drops by the WRs. I initially thought the same thing about Peterman. However after watching a video POA put up in another thread I changed my mind. After he broke his hand you could clearly tell what happened.

So I guess you think CBJ and his staff are morons. Because they seem to be heaping praises on Peterman. But I guess they don't know what they are talking about.

So do you actually believe that the UF team that Peterman played was the same team the rest of their season?

Seriously! They had the #3 defense in the nation at the time he played them. They had a 4-8 season because they were decimated by something like 23 scholarship players receiving injuries in one year!

Dobbs first half vs Vandy was as bad if not worse.

Peterman's first half stats @FL - 4/11 5 yds. 2 INT
Dobbs first half stats vs. VU - 4/7 5 yds. 2 INT

Yet everyone lost their minds about losing to the gators when the "game was in reach"! Vandy was at home! We lost by four at home to Vandy and by 14 to Florida at the Swamp.

But no, "Peterman is terrible", he should "never be trusted again", he has "no SEC talent".

Come. On.

What quarterback was in the game to keep the game within 14? Oh yeah, that was Worley.

Don't you think a better apples to apples comparison would be true freshman Dobbs' first start at eventual SEC East champ Missouri vs redshirt freshman Peterman's first start at then top 20 team Florida? Give us that stat line comparison.

I don't think it's apples to apples. Missouri's defense was ranked 66th nationally when we played them that week. Florida's defense was ranked 3rd nationally.

1st Half
11/18 101yds 1 INT

Game
26/42 240yds 2 INT

Final: 3-31 Missouri

How many 4-8 UF teams did Manning face exactly?

When we played Florida last year the defense they started the game with was as good as any defense we have faced. Florida finished the season 4-8 due to injuries and a offense that was less productive than ours last year.

Again I am not bashing Manning I am just stating fact that even the best QB of all time at UT struggled against Florida so I find it really unfair to Peterman to label him a bad QB off of one bad half of football.

Missouri, during the SEC regular season, was the #2 ranked defense in the conference. Missouri's defense was also the best in the SEC in sacks and turnovers caused, ranking in the top 5 nationally in both categories.

Nathan Peterman

1st half
4-11, 5 yds, 2 INT ....

Final: Florida 31-14 thanks to Justin Worley coming in, settling the offense down, and actually getting us in the end zone.

Btw, your stats were wrong about Dobbs. Only threw 2 ints, not 3. You also left out the fact that Dobbs was our leading rusher (45 yds) vs Missouri. Pretty sure Peterman's 3 rushes for -3 yds didn't lead the team vs Florida.

Hhhmmm weird - I got my stats from NCAA.org and as I said, the site shows Mizzou being ranked 66th in total defense in the FBS in 2013 for games through 11/01/13 and we played them on 11/02/13 (attached). They were ranked 11th in sacks and tied for 8th in turnovers caused that week.

Florida was ranked 3rd through 9/20/13 and we played them 9/21/13.

And if you were reading correctly you'd see the stats that I posted for Dobbs were correct - 2 INT for the game. One in the first half.

But man, you're so right, leading the team to 3 points in 60 FULL minutes of an SEC game is a huge differential between Peterman's and Dobb's performances. Doesn't matter how many yards you rush for, how many completions, or turnovers you have if you can't lead your team to score.

And you won't ever get in the game if you aren't completing passes and managing the offense well (barring of course injuries to three of the other QBs on the roster at the time) in PRACTICE.

So you're arguing in favor of the 2nd year guy who quarterbacked his team to as many turnovers as yards ..... 4 ..... over the true freshman who set a UT freshman record with 26 completions and led his team in rushing. 3 points is nothing to brag about, but it beats the hell out of zero all day everyday.
