‘23 NC WR Nathan Leacock (Tennessee)

And? What happens this year if both position groups look bad again or worse?
They had two DBs drafted into the NFL...
How did we do in sacks? Research that...

And for 100th time, I'll ask you "WHAT LB CORP doesn't stuggle some with pass coverage "? You just focus on Tennessee understandably, but then you magnify the negative, vs looking at the whole picture.

Literally the game of football is geared for offense now.

We had a LB with 150 tackles almost in one season lol, and you think he sucks.
Then completely disregard other LBs struggling against the pass on other teams lol.

We can't have a serious conversation with you about this subject BOT right now Its so a skewed. Not to mention we played against Bryce Young, Matt Corral, and Picket of Pitt. 1 won the Heisman and is still in college, the othet 2 got drafted in the first 2 rounds of the NFL draft...

We had an average SEC defense in talent, coupled with hot and cold offense. 7-6 was the likely outcome.

To TRY and answer your question is to give into it being a valid question to begin with.
You have to see everything about why the defense performed so well some times and downright awful many other times...
And you're not seeing that.

Here come the expert codebreakers finding a negative where there isn't one. I think our leading tackler from last year and the high profile transfer who's been injured locking down the jobs and doing them effectively is probably what Banks and the staff see as the ideal scenario for their defense this season. If Herring is that good where he supplants one of those guys mid-season, that's freaking awesome. All the better for the Vols. But again, I think if we've got a true freshman manning a MLB spot (the Qbs of the defense if you will) it's not ideal generally speaking for a program. But fairly stated, if Herring is indeed a generational talent that's just better for us. I'm just looking at realistic scenarios of what we'll see this year.
No. That’s not what you said. If it isn’t what you meant to say then admit you were wrong and correct yourself.

You said it would mean there’s a major problem. That’s not necessarily true.

I guess if you stroked out after my second sentence you might have had a point. That burning toast smell can be overwhelming.

I really don't care if you want to somehow twist this into below-required-sunshine-level material, I'm simply saying. When we're 5-0 going into Bama week, I think it's far more likely that Banks and Mitchell have played their positions very effectively. Beasley I imagine will also be in the rotation, hopefully he can make a stride this year. I'm also think it's plenty likely Elijah Herring will end up being an impact player for us. As a true freshman? Idk, how often does that happen in college football? I guess our differences on this are you are willing to anoint Elijah without seeing him play a down of football for us and I'm not. And again before you start to twitch, I can easily see Elijah as a fine player for us. He can fight for a rotation spot, kill it on special teams and that's an awesome season for him. A little unfair to ask him to be Jerod Mayo by week 5 lol. Also, you're kinda sh*tting on Banks, again our leading returning tackler lol, and Mitchell who idk, personally I think has All-SEC type talent to say that they'll just be beaten out so easily. Hey, if Herring does prove to be a beast right away, you can enjoy your victory lap and I'll be happy too because it's good for the Vols. I just suspect you're not saying that about Herring because of any football related reasons, I think it's kinda because you think that about every kid we get. Let the kid develop and improve in our program like 90% of kids and he can be awesome in a year or two when his time comes.

As usual you post a lot without addressing the original concern. So I will ask again. What happens if our LB and DBs are even worse this year? If that were to happen, wouldn’t it at least justify looking at BJM and Martinez and asking some questions? Or do you just ignore it and go well hopefully things get better?

Probably need to wait till we are quit signing HS players and targeting portal guys before coach wastes too many brain cells. Bet hypotheticals don't occupy his brain cells.

I'm saying your concern is based off an insufficient method of judgment.

So it's not relevant what you're asking in my opinion.

I'm not trying to be disrespectful.

I'll humor you, every coach gets assessed on their performance. And BJM and Martinez graded above average last year. You don't believe that because you don't see that...
So if they didn't improve they would still be above average.

You really need to pay attention to the rest of the league, man....

Ok how do you know BJM and Martinez graded above average? And what are you basing that on?

And what does the rest of the league have to do with our LBs and DBs?

Dude. Say what you mean in the first place. If you are misunderstood then just apologize, correct the misunderstanding, and go on. What you said didn't need to be "stroked" or whatever. You said it would be a sign of problems if Herring became the starter. That's not necessarily true.

At what point have I anointed anyone much less Herring in that way? Now you are grasping so that you can avoid admitting a simple mistake in the way you said what you said. Something that most here do at some point or another.

And again before you start to twitch, I can easily see Elijah as a fine player for us. He can fight for a rotation spot, kill it on special teams and that's an awesome season for him. A little unfair to ask him to be Jerod Mayo by week 5 lol.
I don't know what kind of player he will be. All I said is that it won't necessarily be a sign that "something has gone very wrong" if he becomes the starter. UT has had Fr that had the physical talent and picked up the schemes and the speed of the game to start. It isn't likely. It is rare. But it is just as much a possibility that something has gone very right as very wrong.

Wow. You have an interesting imagination coming up with all this when someone simply challenged YOUR DECLARATION about the meaning of one person or another being the starter.

Let’s begin with what we believe will be good news later today. Nathan Leacock will announce his college decision at 3 eastern and it would be a major surprise to see him pick anyone but Tennessee. Nathan has been trending hard to Tennessee for a while and credit Kelsey Pope. At a legit 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, Leacock can really move for his size and sees himself as someone who can play that Cedric Tillman role in this offense.
