‘23 NC WR Nathan Leacock (Tennessee)

I like both Smith and Telander. Still doesn’t negate the fact that LB was one of our weakest position groups. And a group that we haven’t been recruiting at a high level. Hopefully both BJM and Martinez do really good this year. But if they don’t, then I would think both can aches need re-evaluated.
I think it’s too early for overreactions…. I prefer the stability of the staff.

They just go here last year...

I like stability as well. How would it be an overreaction if both the LBs and DBs look as bad as they did last year or worse?
as usual. nice try.

Let's allow the coaches to bring in their own guys and give them time to coach them up before we make any quick judgments. BJ inherited an untalented LB room with the departure of Henry T and Crouch (2 starters) and Martinez helped Tae get drafted in the 2nd round and Theo in the 6th. I personally think losing K Law was big as well (he played well for OU last year).

Both positions groups should be better (well I hope so) this year and improving being able to rush the passer will benefit both groups as well.

Starter by mid-season, mainstay by his second and standard by his third imo.
If he's a starter something has gone very wrong. Unless he's just an overlooked beast of a kid (which would be great obviously), I was hoping Jeremy and Juwan could handle the duties this year. My "realistic" hope for Elijah this year was impact on special teams and hopefully cementing himself as a 2nd string LB who sees some snaps. I'm optimistic about our starters there coming good but we have a scary lack of depth.

Why would it mean something has gone very wrong? You're going on record saying he doesn't possess the physical ability to be that good?

We disagree. This kid slipped under all our radar. Generational talent imo.

Here come the expert codebreakers finding a negative where there isn't one. I think our leading tackler from last year and the high profile transfer who's been injured locking down the jobs and doing them effectively is probably what Banks and the staff see as the ideal scenario for their defense this season. If Herring is that good where he supplants one of those guys mid-season, that's freaking awesome. All the better for the Vols. But again, I think if we've got a true freshman manning a MLB spot (the Qbs of the defense if you will) it's not ideal generally speaking for a program. But fairly stated, if Herring is indeed a generational talent that's just better for us. I'm just looking at realistic scenarios of what we'll see this year.
