NCAA Softball Tournament

I'm fine with having to play a SEC team in the World Series, but paring conference teams in the last round is not fair.

The infamous missed tag helped us tie the game, and we probably wouldn't have scored our second run without it. But, let's not forget that UGA 's only run was because of our passed ball. And, UGA's winning run in Sunday's first game was off of a ball skipping away from the first baseman.

The way i understand it, that was the correct call on that play. I am not a huge softball (or baseball for that matter) watcher, but i always pull for the Lady Vols in the Series, so i dont know all the ins and outs of softball (or baseball). But, apparently, the defender must tag the runner with the hand that has the ball, which the defender did not do on that play.

Anyway...... Go Lady Vols, you're all we have to root for now.

I watched the game. The uga player had the ball in right, but tagged runner with left. Regardless, baseball, softball, little league, college or pros, the fielder must tag the runner with the ball. Opposite hand does not count. That is why the uga coach did not flip out. Good call by umps after conference.

Right on, thanks for the clarification.

It's clear Georgia should be in the mix in the WCWS. They are better than at least 3 of the teams that will be there. Just too bad the pairings were totally weird (again). Now Tennessee plays ANOTHER! SEC team to start the world series. Stupid, stupid and stupid.

Like most sports darlings - I guess Womens softball favors the Pac 12 all the time -- like in CFB they always claim the BCS favors the SEC and in NCAA Basketball its always Big East/ACC and so on.

Either hold ball in hand and touch ball to runner or ball in glove and touch runner with ball in glove... Great Call & Glad they got it right!!

I didn't say it wasn't the correct call. I said the UGA player's mistake helped us score runs. If the UGA player had kept the ball in her glove and gotten an out, we probably wouldn't have scored twice, if at all. That's why I called it a missed tag, rather than a missed call.

The real point I was trying to make with that post is that while it's true that the UGA player's mistake helped us score, it's also true that a bad play by UT's defense helped UGA score.

Again, I'm aware that it was the correct call.

You are 100% correct. The announcer even pointed it out. We won the right way

Guys, I'm not questioning the call.

I pointed out that the UGA girl's mistake isn't the reason we won, because our mistake let them score their only run. And, that gets interpreted as me questioning the call.

Nvm, just forget it. Everybody, enjoy the short week. Let's get 'em on Thursday! RVR.

question: isn't that illegal to try to avoid the tag like that by going out of the general straight line you run from 1st to 2nd? I'm aware you can dive to the bag to avoid.. but didn't really think you could make a move that far to the left or right.. I remember getting called out back when I played baseball for a similar move where I basically dodged the tag by making a move towards the outfield like our base runner did..

I'm sure you cannot run, say, to CF, to avoid the tag. But, IDK exactly where they draw the line. I think someone posted in one of these threads that you are out if you stray more than three feet from the base line you establish.

12.26 Running Out of the Base Path or Out of the Runner’s Lane

12.26.1 The traditional path traveled by a runner who is attempting to advance to the next base is defined by the imaginary direct line, and three feet to either side of the line, between a base and a runner’s position at the time a defensive player is attempting to apply a tag.

EFFECT—The ball is live. The offending runner is out, but each other runner may continue to advance with liability to be put out.

Exceptions:

1. A runner is not out when she runs behind or in front of a fielder and outside the base line in order to avoid interfering with the fielder attempting to field the ball in the base path.

I think I was screwed then when I was called out... no way I was outside 3 feet of that imaginary line if baseball has the same rules.

Three feet is only one yard. If you stayed within three feet, that ump must have expected you to just keep going straight.
