I see everyone appears to not be wasting this opportunity to try to expand their power and influence.

CBS News quoted an NCAA source as saying penalties against Penn State would be “unprecedented.” The source went on to say, “I’ve never seen anything like it,” according to CBS.

i don't think the "former"chair, likes the NCAA doing this, but it's clear that the coach and AD were involved in the cover up, so the program should be penalized

doh!!

The penalties, however, are considered to be so harsh that the death penalty may have been preferable, the source said.

They should be afforded due process as well, imo. Horrible precedent if true. Glad the US legal system doesn't subscribe to this mentality......yet.

PSU, will have plenty of due process once the lawsuits start from the abused

I wonder if we'll add a victory for that disappointing Outback Bowl loss after Foster's untimely fumble. Not exactly the most important issue with all of this, but it will be on the undercard for me if they forfeit or at least vacate some wins.

Burn the Locker Room down for starters! How can you take a shower in that place with the knowledge it was Sanduskys pleasure palace? Take the Paterno name off of everything and give the money back if requred to do so!

Not the tabloid ESPN has become...a better article.

How the NCAA should handle the Penn State case has been a source of considerable debate in recent weeks. The wrongdoing does not involve specific violations of typical NCAA bylaws. But the case points to a lack of institutional control and widespread acts of unethical conduct by high-ranking senior administrators as well as the late football coach Joe Paterno.

What's more, the NCAA is taking the uncharacteristic move of announcing the penalties publicly at a 9 a.m. ET news conference Monday in Indianapolis. There has not been an infractions committee hearing regarding the Penn State case, which suggests the NCAA and university might be in agreement on the sanctions.

I always thought the NCAA would get involved but I didn't know it was going to come this soon or bad. What could be worse than the death penalty? I thought that was pretty much as bad as it got?

All for the statue coming down. If the sanctions are a ban on football, not sure I agree with it. Saban had this right. Lets see what the program can currently do to help victim advocates. Taxing ticket sales, giving some proceeds to the victims, etc. I don't care if the program is financially hurt, but the program shouldn't be restricted from playing. Current players had nothing to do with it.
the university is going to shell out plenty to the victims but its not going to be a situation of "let us sell some tickets and we will give you part." also, every time a program gets punished, more innocent players than not are affected this situation is no different. sucks for the players but you live and die with the program you pick. good chance these kids get the opportunity to walk.

I am hearing that they could face a 5-10 year bowl ban, loss of upwards of 50 scholarships (over a 10 year period), and will vacate victories over the past decade. The cover up was unprecedented. This is a shot across the bow of schools. Miami is next up.

Five a year? That's not exactly unprecedented.

I almost wonder if this is a tacit admission by Emmert that the NCAA infractions process is a bloated, unorganized joke.

As far as "due process" goes, the NCAA's "due process" is pathetic, and I think they have reasonable grounds to move forward with penalties. Bodies with significantly stronger investigative powers have already handled the case.

I fail to see what the NCAA would need to accomplish to have grounds to punish PSU.

50 scholarships over 10 years? Meh. Needs more teeth.
