Nebraska vs. Northwestern

...and that wasn't even the worst firing of a coach that Nebraska did. That would be Frank Solich.

Lots of people like to compare Nebraska and Tennessee. We are similar in some ways, different in others. One of the big ways they are different is that at least Tennessee has fired coaches once it has become clear they lost it (Fulmer) or simply could not coach (Dooley, Butch, Pruitt). Nebraska fired Frank Solich and Bo Pelini, for performance, who went 58-19 (33-15) and 67-27 (39-17) respectively. Neither had even one losing season, and Pelini won either 9 or 10 games every single season for the 7 seasons he was there. That's pretty amazing.

It will be interesting to see if Nebraska goes after an Urban Meyer type coach to reinvigorate that fan base and potential recruits if they fire Frost during or after this season.
Perhaps, although that will be a tough sell to an attractive coaching candidate with many other opportunities.

At least Nebraska hasn't Auburned themselves during this debacle with Frost - they've given him more than enough chances. It isn't like they've had a quick trigger finger re: his job security or haven't given him things he's wanted.

They can’t want to fire him. They may have to fire him, but I’m sure they don’t want to. It would be like us firing Peyton Manning or Al Wilson. Auburn OTOH hires a coach and then immediately is looking for the next 5 best possible candidates before the new guy even has an introductory press conference.

They are stuck in my opinion.
Nobody is going to run to Nebraska to be the HC.

Nebraska never should have fired Bo.

Unless Urban Meyer or Nick Saban want to go there...

If Scott Frost can't turn them around, who can? I think any prospective candidate for that position would ask themselves that question.

I'm no analyst of football, but I guess it's safe to say nobody, no amount of coaching is going to turn them around. That's impossible. I kinda though this is really the best they can be, because he's their Johnny Majors, and he has a long leash. As unhappy as they are with Frost on a long leash, it's pretty obvious from observing the SEC that a short leash gets you some bad football. Once in a while somebody, or perhaps eventually everybody, using the short leash will clamber up to mediocrity. LSU being the notable exception. They clamber up to #1.

Now that paying players is legal, they can't even cheat their way out of it.

Johnny's national title was real

I’m guessing Jamey Chadwell will be on the shortlist. Not sure he’d take it. If Harsin doesn’t survive he could be looked at for that job, or Georgia Tech if they don’t drastically improve.

No AD in the country is doing their job if they dont at least call fickle. I know he wants the OSU job, but I am still calling him, introducing myself and offering him 7 to 8 million a year. Make him say no.

That’s a great point. It’ll be interesting to see how the CFP and conference expansion would play into Fickle’s mindset now that Cincy will be in the Big 12.

It's a step up. But not as big of one as it wpuld be with Oklahoma and Texas involved.

One thing to remember is the B1G and NU have a ton of money. That alone is enough to get a big name coach. I doubt Frost makes it thru this season. This is one reason alumni hero's shouldn't go back to coach.

If Lance Leipold can end up at Kansas Chadwell can go to Nebraska.

It’d be a death move but crazy things happen.

Luke Fickell had the whole 2011 season to coach Ohio State. Went 6-6!

No...he's not waiting on Ohio State.
People just say crap without doing any research...

Jamey Chadwell and his offense with Nebraska is the best combination that BOTH parties could ever do.

Luke Fickle was an interim and has built Cincinnati into a very good program since then. He might’ve learned a little bit over the past 11 years. If Ryan Day left tomorrow Luke Fickle would be the HFC in 2023.

Ridiculous to judge him on that basis...he was an interim coach after they had to fire Jim Tressel, had an NCAA investigation, and had a bunch of guys leave.
