I actually don't know if he has the technical authority to do so. Would kind of surprise me if he did because by that logic the President could on a whim fire any federal employee he wanted to, regardless of the terms of their employment.

Practically speaking it seems to me like a very bad idea, anyway, because then you are going to have Presidents just retaliating left and right against people for any number of reasons, political or otherwise. They have much more to worry about than this level of employee.

If an employee of the government, especially of a dept as important as this one, could exhibit such poor judgement I would think it prudent for the president to work his appointees responsible and have the person axed. They obviously lack the judgement and common sense to be trusted with such a post.

So in other words while the actual act may not necessarily be his call he's ultimately responsible.

I don't mind if he reaches out through the right channels to address it, including firing if necessary. I just think he needs to leave that at some level to people closer to the facts.

I'd think POTUS has the power to terminate a Deputy Assistant Secretary, at that level I can't imagine the position being protected by civil service rules.
