That is the reason for everybody wearing them. Masks do a poor job of protecting the person wearing it from the person who is not. But they do a good job of protecting others from the person who is wearing one. So when you have the disease and do not wear a mask, you are spreading the disease. When you have the disease and are wearing a mask, other people are much less at risk from catching what you are carrying.

It’s my understanding that the mask is to knock down transmission distance and not so much to protect the wearer from breathing it in. I could be wrong but that’s my understanding

That’s the issue.....the only person that you can control in those situations is yourself..... you either have to set parameters to keep yourself safe..... figure out how to get high quality n95(which in theory helps) or find a different job to suit your safety concerns.......I have left several jobs over many different concerns.

I saw an older fat guy.... probably mid 60’s.... in Florida back in June .... riding a bike with a freaking mask on. It was 95 outside. I wondered what the comparative risk was in that situation?

I don't know if your naïve or willfully ignorant.
I've been with the same company for 22 years. The idea that changing jobs is just an "oh well" kind of thing, or that I wouldn't have the same idiots somewhere else is stupid. Our company has a requirement for masks but it's flat ignored by many.

Serious question: Have you considered getting an N95 mask? Then, your risk of contracting a virus would decrease significantly and we could all live in harmony. I understand that you are concerned.

I'm 50. I'm in otherwise good health. I have an N95, although it makes it incredibly difficult to be heard while wearing one of these.

My concern is for the outright belligerence of those anti-maskers.

People are wearing masks numb nuts..... and it’s still spreading like hell. Here in middle Tennessee every store you go into requires them..... and guess what.... it’s still spreading. Do they slow the spread? Probably ..... do they prevent it? No.

Sure, people are wearing mask. And people aren't. Every store in Knoxville and Maryville requires them, but guess what? That is ignored by a large percentage. So, if I wear a mask, I may protect you from my sneeze or cough, but it doesn't protect me from those not wearing masks. Why is that so hard to figure out. Would you like to participate in my experiment. All you have to do is stand there. I'll spit at you with a mask on and with it off, and see if you can tell the difference.

When I knew I had it , nobody I stayed away from everyone except NGV . You know , the exact same thing everyone normally does when they are sick .
