If you viewed what they did in any sort of context, what he said has some truth to it. They did sanction him in one instance but if you were paying attention back then, it was obvious they were throwing everything imaginable against the wall to see what would stick.
I see your additional sentences on this now.
The reason he was charged with so much is because he had done so many questionable things. The fact that,in the end, just shy of 200 members of his own party voted to find him guilty and to fine him, I think it was $300,000, is something that will haunt him throughout any general election campaign.
And given his activities over the last 10 years, making millions and millions of dollars with his various foundations connecting politicians and regulators with private benefactors ....
I think given the mood of the country towards inside baseball the Obama team has to be absolutely giddy at the prospect of running the general election campaign against Newt Gingrich.
