Of course those schools have more commits than UT. They didn't hire a new HFC just a few months ago. You think highly rated kids line up to commit to a school and coaching staff before they establish a relationship with their would be coaches? You apparently don't know much about recruiting and should refrain from posting on said topic imo.
Number of Commits for SEC Schools
Alabama - 11
LSU - 10
Georgia - 7
Auburn - 5
Miss St. - 5
Arkansas - 4
Florida - 4
Kentucky - 4
Tennessee - 2
South Carolina - 1
Ole Miss - 0
Vanderbilt - 0
It difficult to not be at least a little concerned.
It's not for the ones that are actually paying attention and understand how recruiting works.
Exactly how does it work??? It seems very simple to me. You get as many of the higher rated players that are a position of need for your program as u can.. You try to get good character guys and guys that can qualify.
It is obvious we are a little behind due to our recent history of turmoil on the hill. However the excuses do not change the situation.
We are behind in a big way, thats a fact. We can admit it, it is not a crime to do so. I have a belief in this staff and think we will get it turned around. Right now we are getting drilled by other schools that are in direct competition with us. It is not arguable...JMO...GBO...
Why is it a problem for a Vol fan to say he is a little concerned. Politically correctness should not apply here. If that is how he feels then he is being truthfull and I don't see a problem...
I have no problem with him having opinion or his concern in general. But he listed commits so far for programs that didn't have coaching changes like we have, highlighting UT with only 2 and that specifically seems to be his concern. He didn't give any other reasons.
So, I was responding to that directly. OF COURSE we don't have many recruits at this time. It's very early in the new staffs tenure, a few months in fact. 18 yo kids with elite talent don't line-up to sign with schools who have had two new coaches in back-to-back years, no matter the history and tradition of the program. It's takes time to talk to kids, get out and visit them, get them to visit campus, etc. It is ignorant and foolish to think that we would have 6,8 or 10 commits at this time. Recruiting is done well by establishing relationships, which this staff is far behind on. Not their fault, just the facts.
The staff seems to be doing very well so far, we are leading for some top quality prospects and are in the top 5 for many many more. It's very early in the process, camps haven't started yet and we have some top talent coming in. We should have double digit commits by August/September and if we don't by October then maybe it's time to be concerned imo.
But if you read the threads on this site, articles on Rivals/scout/espn, pay attention to what's happening in recruiting in general you wouldn't be that concerned just yet. But if you're going to base your entire opinion on how recruiting is going by just the 2 commits we currently have, well then, yeah, you will be concerned. But that's just foolish. jmo
GO VOLS!
amen. I am personally on the side of high character questionable talent a.k.a. overachievers. Honestly I think the word is a joke. Just because a scout/coach not smart enough to see a kid's talent is no reason to knock his accomplishments. Hard work is a talent believe it or not but that being said any kid that gets it done in the SEC HAS TO HAVE TALENT. It might not be the obvious measurable that everyone looks for but they have to have something. There is a Catch-22 at UT. The in-state talent requires the Vols to take more chances on highly rated out of state prospects with questionable character or high character kids with questionable talent. All schools do that to some degree or another but the lack of in-state talent makes the problem more pronounced for UT.
From a rival's perspective I'd like nothing better than for your 2011 class to be over half-full with verbal commitments now. Reason: it means you'd be settling for those players who would jump now at the chance to sign with TN. Trouble is, those folks aren't necessarily the elite talent you're wanting. Absent a preexisting affinity for TN, the elite talent kids aren't likely to jump onto the TN bandwagon this early in the game. They want to see what CDD can do during the season. I think CDD knows this.
Here's hoping CDD tires of those TN fans who are clamoring for more recruits and pulls the trigger on a few. But alas, I think CDD will stick to his guns and try to recruit the athletes he really wants. Even if it means he takes some heat from a segment of the TN fan base who want to see more verbal commitments NOW.
