I truly hope she comes to UT. No one knows the situation. It had to be hard not having Hatchell all year. Kids transfer all the time, so why label or judge her?

Marciniak wanted to come to UT, and was close to committing until Tiffany Woosley from Shelbyville committed first. People close to Michelle fed her the line of Pat not wanting her anymore, so she went to Notre Dame.

She called Pat during her freshman year and told her she wanted to transfer, but Pat told her to finish the year and not call back until that happens. She also self reported this to the NCAA, as it was a violation.

She did end up leaving Notre Dame after her freshman year and is one of the most beloved Lady Vols in history.

Kids transfer all the time? Kids transferring is actually pretty rare and it usually occurs when they don't get playing time or a philosophical issue with the coach. They almost never leave under these types of circumstances where they had an outstanding year and were so instrumental to their team's success. Very odd situation.

I have read many articles of kids transferring since the college basketball seasons have ended. Mens and womens, so yes I stand by what I said

I think it speaks to her character and whether her teammates can trust her. Hey, and I'm not the one who said she was a head case. To me a head case means some type of psychological disorder. I just think she is someone who is probably very self-centered. And, maybe not great team mate material. She has really not offered any kind of explanation to her coach or team mates other than she is unhappy. They deserve a better explanation than that. Also, be careful what you wish for.

I'm not "wishing" for anything. And I don't think we can confidently assume that she hasn't explained to her teammates why she is unhappy or why she is leaving. It appears that they are satisfied and are staying put. I want what's best for the team. I don't know what the answer is. I've acknowledged that it could work or could fail. I don't know her personally; I don't know if she would be good teammate material or not.

my $ says she goes pro.

I'd be extremely surprised if that happens. Even overseas, the money for WBB players is nowhere near enough to forego a free college education. In MBB, a top player can make more in one season than most of us will earn in a lifetime.

“She told us she wanted a release, five days after she said on television ‘We’re playing for you, Coach Hatchell.’ And then I met with her before she left,” Hatchell said. “I kept asking her, ‘Talk to me, what’s bringing this on?’ She couldn’t tell me.”

I previously read what Coach Hatchell had to say, too. I'm wondering if the players know more than what has been published yet???

Are you thinking her teammates might have told her to leave?

Usually you don't have any problems out of transfers. Plus I think her mother would be around Tennessee a lot more than she is North Carolina. I could see her living up there the next three four years like the Moore's lived at UConn. I have no reason to think she would be a bad teammate. She was great at NC but for whatever reason she does not want to stay there.

I don't normally look at players twitters but I looked up a couple of the twitter accounts for the players and I didn't see where they have even commented on it. Just find the whole situation somewhat odd. I guess if she does come here and Holly accepts her then we'll just hope for the best. She might end up going to GT.

You know, stuff happens at college that is completely unrelated to athletics. She may have had some sort of experience that she just can't get away from if she remains, or there might be some ongoing stuff that has just worn her down, again, unrelated to sports.

I sometimes wonder how many people here have kids old enough for college, or alternatively, who remember what college was like for them. Or maybe they're just some of the lucky ones who had pretty decent college experiences, but they just don't have the imagination (or compassion) to understand what it's like for others.

:dunno:

Anyway, if she's interested in us, I'm sure that the coaches will do due diligence in finding out the backstory and seeing if there might be some negative consequences if she did come here. They're paid to do this for a living and all.

I think most of us understand all of what you're saying. It is that to most of us "old timers" the team is more important than the individual. I know that concept is lost on today's generation.

There is no "i" in team, but there sure is an "at me" for some players.

I hear that. At the same time, if (and this is very much an IF) there is something else going on, maybe someone you need to get away from, but circumstances aren't going to let it happen, you may have to take measures that you wouldn't necessarily do. Again, :dunno:

btw, I'm pushing 60, so I'm an old-timer, too. :) But I've been around long enough to know that individuals can and do get caught up, ground up, and spat out by various societal machines, so...

The world has gotten awfully interesting, and often unpleasantly so, in the last 15-20 years. :hi:

Sandvol,
Yes, I have a superior understanding of the game than you...that's pretty much obvious by now-both because I played it and because I know it better. That's why people have paid me to train others in it. And if you'd like to test that 1-on-1 idea in calculus and physics, I'll do that as well. You assume because I was an athlete I don't have the academic chops to go with it? I was a top student who just happened to be very good at sports as well. But what do you want to talk about? Projectile motion as it relates to the optimal angle on a basketball's trajectory to the rim? (The optimal angle is 45 degrees, by the way) Or we could venture off into baseball or golf and discuss the impluse-momentum principle, after we'd reviewed the basics of velocity and force of course, since they're the foundation of the concepts.
Sorry, sandvol, you're assumptions are incorrect. I'll be getting my PhD after wrapping up my second and third masters degrees at UT (first masters was done years ago). I don't doubt at all you're not "physically gifted enough" to play, but your replies are casting serious doubt on your mental acumen as well. Or would that be easier for you to understand if I just used your own words and said "you're pretty stupid"?
Tell you what....I'll leave the same offer to you and 'gule'. A game of 1-on-1 for $1000, except I'll up it to $2000 and make it 1-on-2, since we all know that "not physically gifted" means fat and lazy and it will take both of you, and maybe more, to be competitive with me on the court. Or, since you seem to feel insecure about a game, how about a spelling bee, or an IQ test? Would that make you feel more competitive? I hate to break it to you but you wouldn't be.
And gule, if you think I'm a "real life whiner", I'll repeat my offer....anytime, anywhere. You're the one talking about sticking things up my arse....anytime you want to try, just jump off your laptop and into the real world and I'm ready....on the court or otherwise.

Excellent post VolNExile... The bottom line is none of us know the real story and it could be anything, including off-the-court issues no one knows anything about. I hope the girl finds a program she's happy in and if it's something that can work out and she's going to be a great contributor, I hope it's Tennessee.

It took you two days to come up with this? I hope you know your dissertation subject better or it'll take you about ten years to write it. Really wearing out those degrees huh? P.S.-You being able to beat me in "one on one" or a spelling Bee is irrelevant. I'll still continue to voice my opinions about the Lady Vols and any player or coach involved or who might be involved including DeShields.

I found this old article where DeShields elaborates about her decision making process to go to UNC:

"I had gone to sleep the night before not even thinking about committing to North Carolina," DeShields said. "I woke up that morning, had a tournament, went and played my game and didn't even think about it. Something in my head just snapped and I said 'I want to do it today.' It wasn't anything planned even though it was on Cinco de Mayo but Carolina had been in my heart for the longest. Usually when I am talking to different schools I will talk to Carolina and say 'I really like them.' Then I will talk to a Tennessee and 'I really like them now.' But with Carolina I talked to them when I was on campus and I loved it.

"I started talking to other coaches and my mind didn't change at all and it is like something, it is like God is speaking to me. I am really happy with my decision and I know I made the right one. I believe I did. You know the big names that were recruiting me wasn't expecting me to go to one of those
schools but I really wanted to make sure that I made this decision for me and everybody is like 'North
Carolina had a horrible season last year.' They did, they had a horrible season but that is not going to
change my mind because when I get there we are going to win, it is going to be good and it is going to be
a positive. I have confidence in myself and the other three recruits that are coming in with me that we
are going to make a turnaround for the North Carolina Tar Heels."

On the same day that DeShields announced her decision to commit to UNC, fellow Class of 2013 recruits Jessica Mavunga, Jessica Washington (also a member of the U-17 squad) and U-18 team member Alisha Gray also declared their intentions to play at Carolina. DeShields said she did not recruit them to join her with the Tar Heels but did gauge the interest of her fellow top recruits. Once she realized they liked the Tar Heels as much as she did a plan was hatched to make one major splash.

"It was pretty much 'you go, I'll go,'" DeShields said. "That is how it happened, the same day within the next couple of hours. We had all established North Carolina as the school that we liked and if we all went there we could do something special and be something special. We all had the same feeling about North Carolina before we had even spoke about it. We felt like it was meant to be.

"We got in contact, I had no idea but at (the) Boo Williams (tournament) Jessica Washington was on campus and I was going to be on campus and we ran into each other, Stephanie Mavunga was at Boo Williams as well and everything just happened, it was like God just put it together."

she ought to stay @ UNC in my humble opinion.

But, I'd selfishly love to see her help UT win #9, and/or #10

VolNExile, that wasn't aimed at Diamond, just an observation of some "teammates" I've seen. I agree with your summation and wish her well wherever she goes, and I hope UNC and CSH do well...as long as they are not playing us or another SEC team!

Sandvol,
You just continue to outdo yourself, don't you? It's difficult to imagine you looking anymore ridiculous, but you just keep topping yourself!
1. Do you really think I thought on that for two days? I have a life, Sandvol; I only jump on here occasionally. You should look into trying to get one, but I'm guessing this site is the closest thing you have to friends.
2. I'm sure my dissertation will be done in record time as I do all my academics. Of course you will NEVER do one. The stupidity of your posts leaves little doubt as to why.
3. "Wearing out those degrees"?? Look buddy, YOU brought up academics with the "calculus and physics" statement, not me. You assumed I was an idiot because I was a good athlete, and you were wrong. You opened the subject, couldn't compete, and now are trying to trash me for being better than you at both athletics and academics. If you can't measure up, then don't pick that fight.
4. I hope you do continue to voice your opinion-that's what we're all here for. But let me recommend that you lay off trashing hard-working athletes for no good reason when you have accomplished NOTHING athletically in your life, and probably nothing of note in any other way either. And try THINKING before you express another opinion....if you're capable of it. If you choose not to then let me leave you with the words of Abraham Lincoln, "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt." Because sandvol, the more you speak, the more apparent it is how little you know....about anything. If you should TRY to retort again, please try and do better. Your replies are getting more pathetic every time.:salute:
