Next Year Compared to This Year

dang who's that? :clapping::pepper:

Jimbo Fisher=4 years...how about let Butch coach A SECOND YEAR...I'll concur if his coaching doesn't show an effect it will be apparent...but you're in way too much of a rush per capita the avalanche of anticipatory failure diatribe you produce on this subject...you ain't going to sway anyone to your position by choking this board with words...but hey it's your fingers...(unless you're using Dragon)

Answering much less than the loopy non-sense I am responding to is posted.

I haven't said a word about firing Jones or not letting him have a second year, have I? You can find NUMEROUS posts where I have said he should get a minimum of 3 and has probably bought himself a bonus year by good relationships with supporters and past players.

Sway or no sway... I have just told you what I believe will happen under various scenarios. If Jones improves and wins 6-8 games next year then he's likely to be a good enough coach to stay around for several years. I'm not writing that possibility off... IF there is a major turn around in on the field coaching AND if the development goes well this off-season.

I have a pretty good track record of anticipating what it will take for coaches to survive. I was right about Fulmer and Dooley. I didn't expect Kiffin to bolt after one year but had several arguments with folks here saying he would take any success he had a UT to get what he considered a better job.

I agree with you Doyle but apparently there are people on here that think if you don't show vast improvement after year 1 or 2 then you obviously don't have a good coach.

I'm pretty sure he was being sarcastic.

Yes. If you don't show improvement within a couple of years, the chances that you have a good coach go down significantly.

But that's only half the issue. Recruiting will suffer if Jones does not show he can coach. You can ignore that fact if you like... but it will still hurt recruiting if he doesn't start showing something on gameday.

I read all 400 of your posts on this thread and they all sound negative to me.

That's an amazing ability you have... to read more posts by one poster than the total of all posters. Or did you just lie by exaggeration?

I don't always agree with stj18Â….but he has a solid track record of objectivity.

This is how I see the schedule playing out next year:

Utah State (Knoxville) Win
Arkansas St (Knoxville) Win
at Oklahoma (Norman, OK) Loss
at Georgia (Athens, Ga) Win
Florida (Knoxville) Win
Chattanooga (Knoxville) Win
at Ole Miss (Oxford, MS) Loss
Alabama (Knoxville) Loss
at South Carolina (Columbia, SC) Win
Kentucky (Knoxville) Win
Missouri (Knoxville) Toss up, but Win at home
at Vanderbilt (Nashville) Win

Finish 9-3. The Missouri game could be a loss to put us at 8-4 but we will have the home field.

This could happen if the player development is exceptional and the coaching improves. That is a HUGE wildcard that could even put UT in the OU game. OU wasn't "great" this year if you look at who they played and margins. They lose their top 3 rushers and six of the 8 guys who had 10 or more receptions this year... almost as bad as UT head into this August.

UGA will return more than Mizzou. So swap those two teams and you have my most "rosy" outlook for next fall.

Mizzou loses 2 of their top 3 WR's. Franklin. Three OL's IIRC. Three starting DB's. Two of 3 starting LB's.

They lose six of their top 10 tacklers, the top SEC sack producer, and two of their top 3 INT producers.

UGA really loses very little outside of Murray. Not that he's not a big deal... just that they have a ton of talent returning.

FWIW, while UT is excelling at recruiting this year, Mizzou is currently 28th and more likely to fall than rise unless they cut some guys loose in favor of higher ranked players. They are dead last in star avg right now. So far, they have not turned their success into recruiting wins.

Make a bowl game at a minimum. However, I think they overachieve and win 7-8 games next year.

If Butch really is the answer, he will overachieve next year and have some flashes of greatness. We might wind up 6-6 or 7-5. I don't really think that's great but it's our reality. If we get blown out in 4-5 games next year again then I'll probably fall off of this Butch wagaon. Of course, it might distract me a little if he is sitting in another top recruiting class all season.

Agree with most of this. I think 6 or 7 wins would be an overachievement based on what we know right now. He's going to be dealing with a lot of inexperienced players in key roles. IMHO, that is a tougher task than what he had at the beginning of this year.

I will be stunned if he finishes with a top 10 class next year if he finishes with less than 6 wins. So yeah, that would be a pretty big distraction.

SC has won 17 or so in a row at home. Highly unlikely that we break that streak.

GA isn't as strong at home but the only team we've beat on the road the last couple of years is Kensucky.

Six or seven wins next year would be a realistic expectation for improvement. Anything beyond that would be significant over achievement. Ridiculous expectations for 9 wins just sets folks up for frustration and disappointment.

This will never change at UT unless instate talent gets much, much better... on the order of 20-25 4/5* players a year consistently... with most of them being from the N'ville area and east.

That seems a tad unrealistic, no?

Dooley ruined UT's relationship with high school coaches across the state as well never have a winning record. Butch is building for the future, Dooley was turning it into a train wreck.

Dooley didn't "ruin" squat, except his own chances at success. Most HS coaches across the state understand the history of UT and many are huge fans. Butch has almost immediately repaired any damage (as his recruiting has evidenced), and all he needs to do now is develop the players and win.

I don't see any absolute losses on the schedule aside from Alabama and probably Oklahoma considering what other teams will be losing. I don't think it would be ridiculous to say that we can win all of the other games. I certainly don't think we will go undefeated, but could we beat Georgia, Florida and Ole miss along with our cupcakes and be 6-1 going into 3rd Saturday? It's not likely but if it happened I wouldn't be surprised. I think that if Butch is really the guy we have been searching for we could be there or at a strong 5-2 at that point, which would make Mizzou, UK, VU, SC much more winnable. Again, I am not saying that we WILL win all those games, just that with the right coaching and some luck (which we should have coming our way after the past few years) 8 wins is not out of the realm of possibility.

No. Next year all we will hear is excuses about depth and youth. It will be year three before most of you will be willing to question the quality of coaching.

but isn't that true ? won't UT be seriously in trouble with depth all across the board ? we both know that a pile of freshmen won't cut it in the SEC,of course CBJ is trying to get a lot of help from the JUCO ranks

i don't think we will know how good or bad CBJ is,till he has some quality depth, which usually means being able to red shirt a bunch of freshmen, which is going to take years to get there,i do expect some turn over from his assistants to get to where he wants to be at also

i don't see no quick turnarounds for CBJ and company,it is going to take hard work, for the staff and players, time will tell,as for next year, there is no telling right now as to how good or bad they will be,according to who they get recruiting wise or not,no telling till Signing Day as to what will happen and what spring practice brings

I will be safe and say 6 wins for next year
