Next Year Should Be Even Worse

I think the OP is right on many fronts ..the depth issues will continue . The O line will be young . The D line will be young.

I am more optimistic on other fronts. At least 1 of our 4 QBs will be game ready next season ...probably much improved by the end of this season

Our young , very green receivers will be better and maybe even to an above average level

Our running backs should be much improved with the addition of some very talented freshmen and Lane returning.

Our secondary should improve dramatically ..given their youth this year .

Linebackers may be a push ...but as we get back to 43 backers as opposed to the big 34 run stuffers that we have now in a 43 ...we may improve by default.

Cup half full ? Maybe ...but it is going to take a couple of years of solid recruiting to build depth and secure elite talent to compete with our schedule

So understanding the system more will cancel the senior class/early NFL draftees leaving? If(?) they are a .500 team now, how is it they are going to be better than that next season? Do some of you think Hurd and Paulk are that good that they will be able to run in a new system (to them) better than Neal and Lane do now, and do it with a new O-line? Is that what you are saying?

I am hoping Hurd and Paulk are that good. I am also hoping the rest of the 2014 signing class is "that good". In this situation, you always hold out hope next year is better than this year.

And if things do not change, I do not see a single underclassman on this team going earlier than the 4th round of the draft. Richardson might be an exception. And if they go that late, they should stay and build their stock.

I hope not because we are running out of excuses this year and may not have enough to go around next year.

How do you know the guys doing the replacing wont do just as well or even better. Its not like our O-Line has dominated or gotten the better of the 2 good teams we have played. Our O-Line has honestly been a disappointment so far to this point. We should have been able to run on Oregon and didnt and did nothing against UF. This line is better pass blockers than run blockers. We will be fine on the OLine. We have no depth on the DL and the young guys are getting valuable PT and hopefully we land a few JUCO Dline guys and are recruiting well at LB. Its not like we have an upperclassman at DT that is a dominant playmaker. McCullers is playing good but still isn't dominating like a guy his size should be. So to answer your question yes a year and experience in this system and recruiting the kind of guys they want in this system this yr is very important and we will be much better and improved next season. And by year 3 those 40 pt beatings will be a thing of the past. I am much more focused on watching QB development and seeing one of the FR QB's take that next step. And I am willing to bet Ferguson and/or Dobbs will be successful QB's for us, and putting my money on Ferguson, atleast from the sound of it they think he is the Future. I would be happy with either but just getting a good feeling about Riley and have never even seen him play, probably just more hope and anticipation but at this point its all we got.

Starters with players who likely will not return in bold:

LT 74 Richardson, A.
LG 78 Bullard, A.
C 64 Stone, J.
RG 72 Fulton, Z.
RT 70 James, J.

TE 85 Downs, B.
QB 12 Peterman, N.
RB 20 Neal, R.
WR 8 North, M.
WR 2 Howard, A.
WR 25 Smith, Jo.

LEO 55 Smith, Ja.
DT 98 McCullers, D.
NG 97 Hood, D.
DE 80 Miller, C.
WLB 41 Sapp, D.
MLB 45 Johnson, A.J.
SLB 17 Brewer, B.

CB 27 Coleman, J.
SS 37 Randolph, B.
FS 33 McNeil, L.
CB 23 Sutton, C

These players in most cases will NOT be replaced by guys with more talent. In almost every case they'll be replaced by guys without experience. The biggest DEPTH problem right now is that there are no quality back ups at some of these positions so when the starters are gone... In the cases where there are some quality back ups... there's no one behind them. The roster STILL gets thinner and weaker.

Of course according to some, recognizing problems or coaching weaknesses makes you less of a fan or someone who does not desire success... Oh well.

I think everybody looks at next year as if we are going to be starting true freshman on the lines next year. Even with the turnover on our line, it wont be like in 2010. We will have scholarship offensive lineman who have been around for a good while. Crowder will be a Redshirt Sophomore, hopefully Jackson will be a Redshirt Junior, Wiseman will be a redshirt freshman, with Sanders and Kendrick as Redshirt freshman, as well as a couple of other older offensive lineman. Plus they are smaller and more suited for a zone type of blocking scheme and they will have had a full year in it.

I have been impressed with Jordan Williams, Saulsberry, and Vereen have impressed me this year. I think O'brien, and Carr will also be really good on the interior allowing Lambert to come along later in the year.

I doubt AJ goes pro, so with him and Maggitt back along with the great talent we are bringing in at linebacker I think we will have much better depth and talent than this year.

I can't wait to see the secondary next year, with Randolph, McNeil, Coleman, Sutton, Foreman, and Swafford another year older, plus the addition of Payne, and Kelly Jr.

Overall the offense should be much better even with a dropoff on the offensive line. Skill positions will be more experienced with even more talent behind them.

The defense should be even better with more speed in the back end, better depth at linebacker, and hopefully a better pass rush with Vereen and Williams being another year older.

I think we have at least one more win next year than this year.

great teams have great tradition, great facilities, great heart driven by positive great fans to build up great players. Accentuate the positive eliminate the negative.:)

I'm not trying to be a negative, but Butch took over his last two teams with the cupboards at least fairly full. The opposite of what fooley left Butch.

Not really at Cincy, Kelly didnt exactly leave Butch alot of talent. But Butch took care of that problem and had some good teams after that. I am willing to bet that Butch is the better of the 2, jmo. Kelly has been lucky so far this yr, Purdue and Michigan. St both should have beaten them this yr and we saw what a good, not great Michigan team did to them. Give me Butch any day over Brian Kelly.

Spike's Dad will have improved WRS, DBs, and the TEs can't possibly be any worse. And the QBs, while the same, are bound to at least be a Lil better.... but every single other position will be worse talent wise.

Spike's Dad has his work cut out for him. Hopefully by then he will #unbuttonthetopbutton and not look like a big orange nerd.

I disagree with that. I think we upgrade with speedier players on defense. There may be a few holes on the OL, but otherwise there will be an upgrade in talent at receiver and running back as well.

I don't understand how losing a senior class that will end up averaging less than 6 wins a season is a bad thing.

Correct. Our fans have hung hopes on this offensive line for three years now. They vastly overestimate how much and OL can do for a team without a QB, a few receivers, and two SEC quality running backs.

Does a dominant OL help you win in the SEC....absolutely. Can you compete with defenses like Florida, LSU and Bama without elite speed at skill positions and a QB.....no way.

It is just way too easy to make UT one dimensional right now. If Butch is any kind of football coach, it will be much harder for opposing teams to do so next year.

because of the bare cupboard left by clueless derek dooley, it will take 2-3 years to get the talent needed in this league.

Disagree respectfully. We lose a lot of talent.... but with that goes a lot of losers' mentality.

Another year of CBJs system, another class of his players, another year of changing the culture, a more favorable schedule. I honestly think we finish 4-8 this year. We'll win more than 4 next year IMO. 2016, if Butch is still here, will be the year we finally look like a winning football team worthy of our tradition.

Not only will they be better next season, but they'll be better the rest of this season.
Worley found his game against Florida.
Bet my left nut!

You have to look at what and who replaces them.... and get your head out of your rear about how many they should have won last year if not for incompetence at HC and DC.
