Nico is not ready

It is a perfect combination of 4 things:

1. Nico struggling
2. Bad play calling
3. WR not getting open
4. Bad Offensive Line

All 4 are working in conjunction.
Scheduling cupcakes may not be what it used to be. OU exposed some things, an off week should've helped. It didn't.

Nico is not ready, not all his fault, the play calling was also bad, but he missed an easy pass at the end I think to the TE, he also has no urgency about him wasting time at the start of drives, not running looking down field WAY too long... Gaston Moore needs to start, he might not make some of the big plays Nico does but he will make the little ones consistently. I'm not giving up on Nico, but he needs to sit and watch Gaston run the show and learn.
It's actually just the opposite. Nico should have gotten far more opportunities last year instead of us stubbornly sticking with Milton. Nico could have taken his lumps and learned on the job by playing more in a season that was never destined to be special, and thus have been more prepared for the things he'd see this year. The lack of preparation last year is showing in big games this year when he looks like a deer in the headlights.

Nico has been overhyped, but that’s our fault, not his. One thing I am tired of hearing is “he’s not ready.” He’s been here a year and a half. If you operate under the assumption that he’s a 3-year player (which everyone was until last night), he’s almost at the halfway point in his college career. At what point is it reasonable to expect a player to be “ready?”

My biggest fear with Nico right now is that he looked scared to death on that last drive. When Kirk said he looked like he had ice in his veins I looked at my wife and said “no he looks terrified.”

Everything else is coachable and that is to a point, but sometimes guys have it or they don’t. A fearlessness and a love for the big moments. That’s the only thing I’m concerned about right now longterm.

One of the biggest things Nico could do to help himself is run in certain situations do not just sit in the pocket and let it collapse on him. And thats on him the Oline gives him ample time to read the field.

Nico ain't ready yet. Its his sixth start. He's got all the tools and will get better. To me there's to much hesitation right now. Prob a result of the offensive line and heupel needs to show more trust. Can't coach scared

There is only one concern I have with Nico last night and that's running out of bounds with the clock expiring, as all the above-mentioned can be coached into him if he has the brains for it. And that play has me concerned he doesn't have the brains to run this offense.

Agree. Hopefully, they open things up more next week. Florida is a better offensive team than Arkansas or OU. But they are weaker defensively.

He played timid tonight, he has to take what they give. He passed up runs he could have taken early that would have loosened them up. Tried to stay in pocket too long sometimes. Missed check down guys trying to get the big play a few times. He is for sure going to have to be aggressive as a runner. But tonight his throws were often off. But he is young but he has to become more confident and aggressive.
Trying to figure out why he likes road games so much

This will be the biggest problem with the whole NIL thing. Nico is being compensated as if he is ready, and we don't exactly have any recourse on that end.
Ok, so when you start a new job you've never done before, should you not get compensated for learning on the job? Or do you offer up your services for free until you learn it? That should answer your question!

Looked like Joe Milton out there

Some of that is coaching. I am going to start blaming coaching more than Nico. I would rather see him make mistakes and lose than "hiding" him and being tentative.

He watched Joe all last season. Just stop this nonsense. Nico needs to play and get hit in the mouth. He needs the speed of the game to learn.
I think he is too afraid of making mistakes. That is coachable but I am sure he has been told to be cautious

Was Nico not given his massive NIL deal because of his bonafides as a starting QB? He's getting Davey O'Brien money and not coming close to earning it. Maybe Nico matures and becomes excellent, perhaps even by the end of the season. But he's not earning his paycheck right now and the fanbase shouldn't pretend otherwise.

Freshman qb making freshman mistakes. It’s not all on him, part of the learning curve. My biggest problem with him is that the next time he throws the ball away will be the first. He’s used to being the biggest, most athletic guy on the field so he could always get away. Not in the sec. Also, a lot of the complaining about running up the middle is just getting whipped up front. We line up with 2 wides on one side and one on the other so we have a tight end and a back left. Arkansas lined up with deep safeties and only kept 5 guys “in the box”. Every coach and every metric in America says you have 6 (5 OL and a tight end) to block their 5, then you run the ball there. We busted one run against that and got a bunch of 2-3 yard runs, otherwise. That’s not on Nico or Heupel.

Yes, Nico definitely holds onto the ball too long, but gah our OL is just completely garbage. I've been saying this part for weeks. I agree on all four though
