Nico is not ready

Several of his throws last night were worm burners that if caught, had little chance of gaining any yardage. Others were high and uncatchable, some were poor decisions on Nico's part, but as a whole, the play calling was not what it should have been. The whole team had a deer in the headlights look about them last night. As someone else pointed out, if a 3-3-5 defense is a Heupel offense stopper, he needs to incorporate some other plays to take advantage of the weaknesses of that defense. It's all about making adjustments for what the other team is doing.

He has all the talent in the world. He’s still green. Amplified by the fact he’s the starting QB at an SEC program noted to be receiving an enormous NIL deal.

It is what it is. It’s always somewhere in the middle of the hysteria. He’s not awful, but the world is gonna start expecting more when you’re getting paid millions at a young age.

Just promise me this isn't another JG situation and our stockpile of 5* QB's don't decommit because of our OL development and same 4 play pee wee football style offense.

Pretty please,

GBO

Yes, Nico definitely holds onto the ball too long, but gah our OL is just completely garbage. I've been saying this part for weeks. I agree on all four though

We need play calling IMO and the penalties created by our o-line is killing us.

He just turned 20 a month ago. He’s a redshirt freshman. Not his fault people hyped him up to being the 2nd coming of Jesus. It’s looking like he could be a 3-4 year QB for us instead of a 2 year and then pro. He’ll develop and we will be fine
He won't have that long if the other commitments at the QB spot are better.

OR Maybe the guy who is sitting on the bench who knows your system and been loyal deserves a shot? Maybe you could learn to read and comprehend what I am saying. Nico missed throws both low and high, got Squirrel White hurt with one, didn't run when it was open, and ran out of bounds on the last play like Milton did... Tell me why he deserves to play over Gaston?
Love this post!!!!

Was Nico not given his massive NIL deal because of his bonafides as a starting QB? He's getting Davey O'Brien money and not coming close to earning it. Maybe Nico matures and becomes excellent, perhaps even by the end of the season. But he's not earning his paycheck right now and the fanbase shouldn't pretend otherwise.
How bout pointing fingers at the O line that continues to underperform with sacks given up and the repeated pre-snap penalties. We were in 3rd and long most of the night.

Did anyone see the receivers getting open?
I did not, but the Hogs had a game plan defensively that worked and got pressure with 3 defensive lineman way too easily and dropped their LB in coverage. When we have to keep our TE and running backs in for pass protection it only allows three receivers. Just my humble opinion CP, our O line and stupid penalties are a real problem for us

He’s only played a handful of games against not so great competition. It’s still a process. He isn’t going to improve sitting on a bench watching.

Did anyone see the receivers getting open?
Yes, he overthrew Squirrel White on an long pass down field that would have been a TD, he missed a TE near the end of the game with an overthrow also, and missed a wide open guy in the back of the endzone at the very end. Also he kept throwing low as well, one of them would have been a first down but Squirrel had to dive and got hurt.

And if anyone starts applying pressure there, he'll resent it - understandably so to some degree - and then you'll just have a big ol' stinkpile of trouble figuring out that situation.
Yes, but at the same time you dont just hand people the keys to the car. My problem with Josh is that he just coronates a QB and unless they get hurt they cant lose the Job. I would personally let Gaston finish off the season, unless he comes in and is horrible, then you get J-J-Merk a shot. Then next year its a QB competition between the 3 guys, Nico, J-Merk, and G-mac. If Nico or anyone does not like they let them hit the portal, you have to earn the starting job.

Okay, think about next year. Bench Nico and he's almost certainly in the portal.

Gaston is in his last year.

Merk is a true freshman, will be..... like Nico..... a redshirt freshman who has a year in the system watching.

We're definitely better going that route, right?

Nico is getting all the hate for the last play, but no credit for the long pass on that drive where he had to evade the rusher, escape the pocket, and make a tough throw on the move to get us down the field and in a position to win.

The entire offense did not do well. O-Line did not give Nico time. Nico made some poor throws. Receivers dropped some passes. Running game was subpar. Play-calling was just awful after going up 14-3.

Nico did not play well, but neither did anyone else on Offense.

Keep telling yourself he should be benched. Glad you aren’t a coach.

Nico is not ready, not all his fault, the play calling was also bad, but he missed an easy pass at the end I think to the TE, he also has no urgency about him wasting time at the start of drives, not running looking down field WAY too long... Gaston Moore needs to start, he might not make some of the big plays Nico does but he will make the little ones consistently. I'm not giving up on Nico, but he needs to sit and watch Gaston run the show and learn.

Merklinger's development timeline might be accelerated to give Iamaleava some competition.

Sampson was the only offensive player showing out last night.

Poor pass protection + Immobile QB = Trouble. No, that's not the entire story, but it's very difficult to overcome.
