Nico is not ready

It's that time of year once again in Knoxville and like the leaves turning you can count on the most popular guy on campus being the ever popular back up quarterback at the University of Tennessee.

Last years most popular guy, Nico, is taking a beating after stepping up to start and this year the new most exciting guy on the roster is Gaston Moore.

Take a victory lap, Gaston and ask Nico for pointers about being the savior of UT football until you actually get the job......

Can’t bench Nico yet lol. I think he will bounce back. We need to see him run more and and scramble like he did vs Iowa and nc state. Receivers need to get open. Florida is gonna smash us if we don’t adjust.

Nico isn't immobile. He's not prime Lamar but he has some wheels.
Maybe he's just being very tentative for whatever reason, but he hasn't shown it yet. We desperately need to see it. Again, I really like him, he seems like a great kid. But it seems to be greatly hampering our offense that he's not being much of a threat with his legs.

I think it's a business decision, in part. He watched Hendon Hooker who ran extremely well for us and opened up the offense a lot by doing it...... and nearly got his NFL chances ruined doing it.

With Nico's future, being a really aggressive runner in college could shorten his real career in the NFL. We may not want to see that but whatever we're paying him isn't close to his earning potential at the next level.

The man needs to look out for himself. JMO

Was Nico not given his massive NIL deal because of his bonafides as a starting QB? He's getting Davey O'Brien money and not coming close to earning it. Maybe Nico matures and becomes excellent, perhaps even by the end of the season. But he's not earning his paycheck right now and the fanbase shouldn't pretend otherwise.
Dumb. Thats like saying because a QB today makes 10x as much as Dan Marino he should be ten times better. He was paid the market value for a player of his POTENTIAL. That’s how this market works. You can like or hate it but that’s what it means.

If that was the case you would’ve seen him sliding a lot more and not running some of the dumb runs earlier this year where so many of us were begging him to learn to slide. So no, body of work points to the exact opposite of what you’re saying. Nice try

That's all well and good, but I don't think people should expecting a lot of fan support if they're looking out for themselves to the point of not making plays in critical moments. The program can't advertise a big ol' sign that says "I will give my all for Tennessee" and then ... you know ... not have players give it. So.

Yes you most certainly can.
You CAN sit them, and oddly last year it was "why are we sitting Nico, paying him all that money, and playing Joe?" VN is never happy.

Bench Nico now and he'll never take another snap at UT and we'll be rolling the dice on another redshirt freshman, Merk, next year or a true freshman or someone Heupel finds in the portal or...... has Navy got another year?

It's one thing to run against Kent State level talent vs running against SEC level linebackers.

This is an awful take. If he plays like this, he won’t have to worry about the next level.

True but it would be a huge mistake. Heupel hitched his wagon to Nico. He'd better do all he can to make sure it works out.
I see your point. Not sayin V this will happen but say Nico doesn’t improve and gets worse. And starts costing us games. If Heupel just leaves him in, that’s a bad look for our program.

Somebody show this to Nico...this is what he had to do on the last play...buy time and give his guys a chance

I think this could come with experience. Learn how to stay composed and evade pressure. Hooker did this very well too.

Lots of guys make business decisions to sit out bowl games, etc and not risk injury. It's foolish to think some kid is going to take too many risks with an NFL career on the horizon.

It's not at all a new concept.

Horrible take.

He’s a redshirt freshman, who’s proven absolutely nothing. His business decision can come later, when’s he’s shown he can play. Who says he has a NFL career based on the product shown?

I have no doubt he will, at all, he will have a career.

Point being he’s at no position to hold back anything.

If the leaders of a team aren't going to take too many risks, then why should other players take risks either? Why should anyone give everything they've got? Just give enough to get by most of the time. If winning isn't as important as not getting hurt, then players will never put it all on the line to win.

What was it Nick Saban always used to say? "You go out their and make their asses quit." Or something like that. If teams have players playing not to get hurt, they aren't going to make anyone quit. I don't think any program, Tennessee included, can climb the mountain if that's happening.

All of us here were certain when we got him he'd never stay 4 years before he declared for the draft. That was the strong general consensus.

All of a sudden, y'all have the knives out.

Nathan Peterman had a long NFL career. JG played a year in the NFL. Joe is playing in the NFL.

Nico isn't as good as any of them, right?

Clearly, you didn’t read the post.

I said I’m sure he goes to the NFL. I’m saying there’s no reason to bench the guy.

The main point was he hasn’t shown anything, to this point, to be able to make business decisions.

right?
