Nico leaving?? [NOPE]

Why is it so hard to admit when someone has far underachieved expectations? It’s not an attack on him. It just is what it is. He was a low tier SEC QB. As you said I hope he does improve. He’s got the intangibles. We’ve seen many highly recruited QBs not live up to the hype lately. Bailey most recently. It happens. Call it freshmen all you want, but he’s 2 full years into the system now.
Take a look at the QBs above Nico….any freshmen? Sophomores?

It’s not hard…… I just disagree.

We're talking expectations vs reality. We've got a full bench of Qb's that thought Nico would be in the draft after next season. This isn't the 90's, these guys aren't going to wait an extra year like Tee did when Peyton stayed. Unless there's some sort of biblical miracle, there's no way Nico declares after next year.

Nico has much more talent that Hooker and it is not close. Sure, as a 23 year old 5th year senior with elite NFL receivers with elite speed he looked great. 50/50 Nico starts an NFL game before Hooker. I loved Hooker but don’t blame Nico because idiots on here thought that 5 star meant he was going to win the Heisman as a freshmen.

How many out of those 5 years did Hooker start? Would he have even got a chance if Milton doesn’t go down? And, LOL, who were the elite nfl receivers he threw to? The fact people go out of their way to call Nico a “freshman” when he sat for over a year and a half shows they are far too quick to make up all the excuses they can. As much as he was hyped up he should’ve at least been able to show whether he was a bust or not without handcuffing the team to protect him. Even then we got glimpses.

All you cats downing Nico need to ask yourselves how many freshman QBs have had seasons like he did. Not just at TN….. anywhere …. Then ask yourselves which of the Vols receivers will be drafted….. then ask yourselves how many Olinemen will be…… then STFU
Marcus Mariota, Trevor Lawerence, Tua Tagoviloa, Jalen Hurts, Bryce Young, Josh Dobbs, Tyler Bray, Justin Herbert, Caleb Williams, Justin Fields, Deshaun Watson, Chris Leak, Tim Tebow, Johnny Manziel, JT Barrett, Jacob Eason, Jake Fromm, and Matt Barkley were all more productive players in either their redshirt/true freshmen years or true sophomore years after playing a small role as true freshmen. Even DJ Lagway is more impressive than him. Stop saying “Nico is a freshman” as if he was in high school this time last year. He started practicing with the team in December of 2022. He’s had a bowl practice, spring ball, an entire offseason, fall camp, a redshirt year while playing mop up duty, another bowl pracice and bowl game, spring practice, an offseason, another fall camp, a full season, and a third year of bowl practice and we’re still wondering how he’s going to be when he steps onto the field next season. Nico was considered “a generational talent” and so far it’s not played out that way. I think it’s safe to say

A: he’s not what we thought he was coming out of HS
B: Josh Heupel isn’t the coach/QB developer we thought he was when we signed Nico
C: a little bit of both

D: our receivers and OL weren't as good as they need to be to compete for an SEC/ National championship. Add in a couple of key injuries, and the story is told.

NI has unbelievable potential, and some good recruiting, development, and coaching at all positions will lead to great things.

He played 5 years of college and had one really good year. Great for US. Hyatt was an elite receiver who was drafted in the first round I believe and is one of the fastest receivers in the league. We have no reciever in this current roster who worries other teams like Hyatt did and that is a fact. You think Nico is a bust? Watch how quick he would get snatched up if he does enter the portal. But I think it is cute how in one post you discount Nico being a freshman because he was back up for one year but discount Hooker being a 6th year senior by asking how many years he started. But to answer, Hooker had 15 starts at va tech and played in 25 total games then had 22 starts for the vols. Meaning Hooker had been in college 5 years and had 26 starts while playing in an additional 12 games prior to his senior season.

Hard to say that Heupel can't develop QBs. I have a buddy that's a life-long VT fan, that still swears that the Hooker that played here is not the same Hooker that played at VT.

D = Heupel not being the coach we thought he was. Having an abysmal OL and WR room in year 4 and potentially having an even worse one on year 5 lands solely on the HC’s inept roster management and play development. How many teams in the transfer portal era have gone 7-5, 10-2, 8-4, and 10-2 and gone into year 5 with almost 0 production returning offensively? A walkon RB and former walkon TE are our top 2 returning skill players this year and there’s a very good chance our best offensive weapon next year is currently a defensive back

Different times my friend. Hooker received $0 (as far as we know) and NI gets 8 million. Be honest, has he earned it? IMO.... ABSOLUTELY NOT

Hooker was extremely efficient at Virginia Tech, he just wasn’t in an offense that fit his skill set and didn’t have a lot of weapons around him. Also keep in mind Heupel saw Hooker go through spring practice and said to himself “this guy isn’t going to cut it I’m going to go get Joe Milton” and essentially gave him the starting job and refused to give Hooker an opportunity to prove himself in a game after it was obvious Joe had accuracy issues and no pocket presence. Does he even give Hooker the opportunity if Joe doesn’t get hurt and if Joe hadn’t gone down imagine where we’re at right now

Way too much 1:1 comparison here. Nico, or any other freshman, will be limited by, or limit, the talent around them. O-Line, WR, QB…. All interrelated. They lose or win together. Peyton himself may have looked pedestrian in this offensive iteration of Tennessee’s offense. Maybe he puts it into Overdrive.

Marty Schottenheimer used to talk about keeping QBs even in their 2nd year; Don’t let them regress. This was, for all intents and purposes, Nico’s “2nd year.” 2025 will tell us who we have. IMO… Nico is going to BALL!!!!

Well he was paid for potential and he still has plenty. Had he been a team with a decent O line and more dangerous receivers he would look like a superstar. But regardless your assertion that Hooker is”50 times better” is absurd. And the fact is Nico probably has earned his NIL because the excitement of a top 5 recruit absolutely has boosted this program over the past 3 years preceding his arrival even. When was the last time we were in the real running for a 5 star QB? Hell, seems the last big time recruit we got was the running back from Kansas (Bryce ? Something) during the Kiffin year.
