Lots of good stuff in this thread. Name, image, likeness. The guy that coined the phrase “student athlete” went to his grave regretting it.
Walter Byers. He could not have foreseen the money in college sports today, but he realized the error. He certainly couldn’t see EA sports in the future, but he could see the damage it would do to college sports.
Effa Manley. The only woman enshrined in Canton. Great story.
The United States is the only country in the world that ties education to athletics and it is big business…for TV, for the “front porch” of some Universities, for businesses in the communities they serve.
However, one cannot stick a label on it. “He’s the QB, he deserves this because football brings in all the revenue, baseball wouldn’t exist without football.” That might have been true in Mr. Byers’ day. Not now.
As thing’s currently stand, and because I’m a musician and know the costs of making shirts, jerseys, hats, etc…I reckon that’s taking yer parents money and going to Las Vegas and gambling you’ll be a starter.
I refuse to play that game. If I buy a jersey directly from a player, I feel good about it. Is it gonna help him/her pay off the debt, probably not, but to sit in the stands with his/her name on the back, how much is that worth? A few short years ago, that wasn’t possible. Progress is slow sometimes and it’s taken a long time to get to here. @preacherman20 just happens to be in the first wave.
There’s enough money. Nobody here, I hope, believes, that all athletes on campus, scholarship athletes, should have to foot the bill women too. I have been saying it for many years, there’s enough money to go around now, being tied to rules invented in the 60’s and 70’s doesn’t make much sense, unless you rewatch episodes of Mutual of Omaha Wild Kingdom.
The University of Tennessee could do it, be first, but…it’s coming, maybe not in my lifetime but it’s coming.
GBO!!!
