NIL has already begun to get out of hand

I'll tell you what's digging a hole in my brain rn, and i don't think anyone has an answer for me so I haven't asked but, what happens to recruiting guys and how will they adapt? The guys giving stars are no longer valid. How do you have an amateur ranking system in a pro sport? What's to stop people from buying their way in? Nothing, as far as I can tell. The whole cottage industry just lost legitimacy. Not sure if this is good or bad, but I'm sure those guys are in a panic rn.
Are the NFL rankers imaginary? They could be bought.

The NFL players used to come from the amateur system. There is NO MORE amatuer system, and NO over seeing, or governing body. It's a free for all rn. I don't have the answers, just asking questions.

Hate to say it, but this is making a beeline for a player's union.

And who watches those games ? No one.

Who cares? And if an NFL farm system were capturing the top talent coming out of HS or kids that went to college and dropped out people would watch. Put the teams in non NFL cities and I think it would do well, especially in the southeast.

It would be like minor league baseball. If the minors didn’t exist and MLB operated like the NFL does, what would college baseball be like these days? Maybe I’m wrong but, I can’t imagine it would be that much different in terms of fan interest. Do people go to minor league games because they want to see the next big player? Maybe in rare cases. Most I think go because it’s something fun to do nearby and cheaper than going to a pro game.

How does the ability to get paid affect a kid's talent? Are you suggesting that 247 or Rivals might say "we think this guy is a four star, but now that he can get paid we just don't know anymore..."?

So, what’s your concern? That high schoolers will pay scouts to inflate their ranking? Cause the free market has a solution for that. That scout would be terrible untrusted and end up unemployed. Also, players that pay to camp have higher rankings many times, just because they are more visible. People here call it the Bama bump, but in actuality it’s many times a kid that can’t or won’t camp, is a 3 star, bama offers and 247 says, hey, if bama would take this guy we need to watch his film more closely because we have likely missed something. From your post I’m not sure what your real concern is, but the rankings will stay the same

Well, lets hope that works and everyone is well intentioned Otis. A players union in coming. And, yep, this is going right down into high school. The agents are licking their chops.

So, who comes out on top of this "game of thrones" here? The house of Sankey, The house of Phillips, The house of Warren? or, a rogue blind kid in a wheelchair?

but what does a players union change from the scouting process? All that does is drive down the wages of the top 20 percent of workers and drive up the wages of the bottom 20%.

As long as the players are not "employed" by the university what good will a union do?

the players will need a union to deal with the agents. who will be buying off and paying off anything they can get to... and they have a lot of dirt on a lot of people. These guys handing out value points (stars) are already wrong most of the time and stay employeed anyway lol.

And what is the media demand for minor league baseball? And I forgot about everyone sitting at home on Friday night watching dirt track racing on the major sports networks. Where it the market for Division II or Division III programs? Remember the USFL playing in front of empty stadiums? LOL!!! Southern cities, you mean like the Birmingham Stallions or the Memphis Showboats. Those experiments have already taken place. You are wrong. The Tennessee Smokies are great for an adventure with the family on a Sunday afternoon but which media network is clamoring to show their games?

The fans' attraction to college football has to do with tradition and heritage of the university programs. And that is intentionally being destroyed by the recent generation. Families have connection with either going to school at UT or older members following the program for generations. That is something that will not exist with farm teams.

Who would care about a minor league? But I do encourage it since they would stop taking educational resources away from kids who want to enhance their lives though education. And if you suggest that the university profits from the program then why are they searching for donors to provide the $104,000 to annually support the each student athlete on campus? You think that those athletes are going to be supported at that level in a farm system?

There is a reason the NFL has utilized the academic system and it is for their advantage. No one else's. They will not give up their profits. I suggest they have a owner player 50/50 participation plan that would fund such a farm system. A player league participation fee would at least force some of the players to give back to the system they profit from. Not many players are as responsible as Alvin Karmara and live extravagant lifestyles instead of helping their communities or giving future players opportunities to succeed.

Two cents deposited!

I think an NFL farm system would do well but frankly IDGAS if anyone watches it. I just want another path to the NFL for the knuckleheads who have no desire or business being in college.

No. I'd think representatives will pop up to handle this demand. An agency that can field offers, handle the contracts, tax forms, etc. That said, I'm not sure there are that many players who will get enough volume to warrant needing someone to do all this work. But I dont see where believing unions will be needed.

Pretty sure that if the minor league system had to pay its own way, a large majority of the teams would shutter on the spot.

Top six average attendance in 1985, before the League folded. All in the Southeast.

When college football no longer produces quality prospects, the NFL may look into it.

Funny you mention the Stallions. Birmingham has had a franchise in every non-NFL league that has ever been created, and every one has folded.

When the next anti-NFL league is formed, Birmingham will be there!

It sounds like T. Boone Pickens, Phil Knight, and a few other billionaires can now recruit top talent for their favorite schools. I wonder if the Haslam's would mind selling the Browns and their other business interests and holdings - so that we have a chance to be competitive? :)
What are the Tennessee Tech's, ETSU's of the world supposed to do ?

Maybe you are going to need to have an amateur division - and a professional division with the pro division consisting of 6 to 10 teams - even then you end up with the New York Yankees with no spending cap - one team could easily dominate everyone else and ( buy ) end up with all the
top players playing for them.

The private schools vs the public schools in Tennessee high school might be an example, but on a much greater scale.

T. Boone can't.
