I discouraged my kids from joining. They didnt.

Son tried it for a year but dropped out because it was boring, could have just been a bad troop they didn’t do much but fundraise.

With the price of summer camps these days, I'm not surprised.

In my daughter's time, mid to late 90s, Girl "scouts" didn't do 1/4 what her big brother did in boy scouts. She was all excited when she joined Brownies but got quickly discouraged at the "goofy" stuff they did compared to her brother learning how to sharpen knives & hatchets for his Totin Chip, going camping, shooting guns, canoes, row, & sail boats, rappelling, ...

Girl Scouts didn't have a chance.

Sounds to me like an issue for the leadership of the girl scouts to address.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Feminize men? LOL, are you high?

Most of you would be better served to take your cues from people affiliated with the organization than making low information reactionary comments like this.

I volunteered in the boy scouts and cub scouts. I have a little understanding of what's going on. this is more PC pushed on young boys to make them feel bad for being male. this is what your party has been doing for years.

Just found the BSA proposed uniform for female scouts. Wanna officially reverse my prediction on future declining participation. Also, offer a name change to the "Oh Boy! Scouts".

Unless you are a proficient outdoorman and got them out and could teach all the available merit badge skills, they really did miss out on so many things. Those who don't do it just don't understand. Mountain climbing, Rappelling, whitewater canoeing, rafting, kayaking, scuba, sailing, marksmanship, archery, robotics, ...

Activities for which merit badges can be earned by demonstrating basic or proficient knowledge.

Every single astronaut who landed on the moon was an Eagle Scout. Parents who encourage scouting can reap rewards. My son had a full pre-med "microbiology" academic scholarship at UTK, and added financial support because he was an Eagle Scout. After med school, for his Emergency Medicine Residency match he was chosen as one of 10 out of hundreds who applied at Case Western University Hospitals (a top 10) and was told the fact he was an Eagle Scout weighed heavily in his favor.

Scouts are not wussified and they are not easy and they have lifelong benefits for those who actually take it serious.

And if you also get involved it can be some of the most fun you and they will ever have.

She could earn her woodworking merit badge with me.

Understood. Eagle scout, myself.

This is what I was referring to:

Camp Davy Crockett - Summer Season

Little crazy on the prices. I understand infrastructure and whatnot, but dang...

For a week of camp? That's cheap if you're near by...

My troop is going to spend $6k on a charter bus just to get us Rainey Mountain GA in a few months. We have to put up the driver in a hotel for a week to boot.

$250 is a lot for some families to pony up.

There are additional charges for different programs.

For a week plus meals, it's pretty reasonable compared to many summer camps. Additionally, most camps have "scholarships" for kids that need financial assistance.

Then don't you think that's a girl scout problem and not a boy scout problem?

Yes, it was/is. But they have a whole program geared up that didn't compete with what the boys do. And why not let the boys and girls do everything available in Boy Scouts? When they reach Venture age (13-1/2 to 14 graduate 8th grade) they can anyway. Why not have the girls just as competent in all they outdoor activities as the boys when entering? Man, it's FUN taking a group of kids on a 7 day trek across the Appalachian Trail along the roof of the world in the Smoky Mountains. It's FUN racing sailboats all over the southeast. It's FUN seeing the light come on in a kid's eyes when he (and now she) learns how to do these things. Some they take with them forever.

I've been back as an adult, though admittedly it's been a few years. And I can tell you they ain't eating $250 worth of food or getting $250 worth of services.

One thing that I never understood was the OOC charge. You should be encouraging Troops to come in from the far regions and spread the word about how awesome the place is. First come, first serve obviously, but why the additional money especially when you can't fill the Camp with Troops in your own Council?

Anyway, price up front is one thing. But when you add in the "need to buy this for basketry, this for woodcarving, this for rocketry, pay a fuel charge of $20 for motorboating/skiing, etc" the hidden costs really start putting a hurting on a family's wallet. Or a Troop leader who pays for such things out of their pocket.

I don't even want to know what a National/World Jambo costs these days. Or Sea Base or Philmont (though you would know the latter)

I'd disagree on the bang for the buck, I think you get out of it what you put into it.

Regarding the OOC charges, most of these camps have a number of sessions over the summer - one 'home' council may hope to fill up one session if everyone in the council attended - but they don't. Family vacations etc, summer school etc get in the way.

These camps have to market themselves to councils all over the country to fill up all of their sessions.

With the number of merit badge offerings at the camps now days, one is not relegated to having to choose a merit badge that has additional costs. There are plenty of others to choose from.
