Thanks for this wonderful post! I think you add something critically important in the Angel debate. Her being true to her Baltimore roots and staying real is also why there can be some racial element that gets triggered by some folks who hate her, though I realize that others just don't like her break from traditional sportsmanship and for them it is nothing to do with race. I personal admire her grit and her speaking her mind even when it is not a popular opinion, while other times I am annoyed by her behavior. Perhaps I give her a bit more grace as an LSU alum.I think the way she speaks and her etiquette is part of her brand as a Black woman from Baltimore. It’s seemingly more “real” and less reflective of what academic partners think is marketable, which is an entire side conversation. fwiw, I agree that she could have pursued that, but I think it’s really phenomenal that women’s sports (and social media plays a large role in this) have expanded such that people can try to forge unique paths towards whatever financial success looks like for them.
