Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2023-24

No matter how athletic Ole Miss is and tough defense Ole Miss plays, again seems like no one can shoot 10 feet away from the rim
Same as it ever was. This is Yo. I'm now officially less worried about Ole Miss, though the matchup of their defense w our high octane offense will be a movie.
Supremacy? Unless she can raise her efficiency, she is going to look like an overrated player for player of the year. She scored alot of points, but her shooting percentage was average at best last year and then closing the last 7 games at under 31% doesn't help.
How do you have a 27/10 double double and look bad? Like this, like JuJu did today. Way, way too much forced offense too inefficent and way too many t.o.s. Numbers look far better than the performance. I blame coaching; coaching a superstar isn't a gimmie and Gottlieb is not off to good start w it this year.

I'm also unhappy w JuJu now arguing every call like she was already in the W. For the love of God, let's not start this in college as well. You weren't fouled everytime you missed a wild shot. Accept it.
Yes, I realize it's the first game and two ranked teams matching up early can look ugly at times. Especially when playing a team like Ole Miss.

That being said, I'm still not sold on Gottlieb's coaching. This is a big year for her, and I'm curious to see if she can get all this talent to gel.
So ugly overall that it gave me new appreciation for CKC's high octane offense. This crap ain't it. This was painful and embarrassing, very bad half court execution that displayed every negative cliche about WBB. If OM is top 20 and USC top 5, I feel way better about the LVs chances.

I get that it's early and many haven't played together, but they shouldn't look like they haven't played at all.

Stipulated that the competition level is very low, but KY, as I feared, looks good. Baby Key is versatile and playing very wel,l and as advertised, Clara Strack is really, really good. Mobile and skilled, she's the kind of big the LVs need to recruit. And they have an All American pg. IMO KY is a better team overall than Ole Miss. ALA, KY, and the LVs are def darkhorses that could make noise in the SEC this year.

Been a pretty good game between Michigan and South Carolina. Michigan has uglied it up. They are a scrappy, tough group.

South Carolina will sort things out but they aren’t organized yet. People still trying to figure out their roles.

Gotta say, not a fan of PaoPao’s game. Just kinda boring and doesn’t pass enough for as little as she shoots imo. I think Dawn would be smarter to run Fulwiley at the point more. They need a motor and PaoPao is not it.

Agree, I think they need Fulwiley to be more of a focal point. I think this is going to be one of the most interesting and unpredictable seasons we’ve seen in quite a long time. I’m not sure we’re going to see any teams really separate themselves as sure bet final four contenders for some time.

These teams are really going to have to WORK this year and need a lot of time to gel and peak. I feel like it’s going to be an exciting season full of surprises, and I’m optimistic the Lady Vols are going to be one of those surprises.

I watched segments of multiple SEC, ACC, and the nationally televised games today.

The SEC rankings are not accurate and will a look a lot different once conference play gets into full swing.
Oklahoma, Alabama, and Kentucky are going to struggle against athletic teams in the SEC. The players with height on Kentucky roster are not ready for SEC play. Losing Petty and Jenkins was a setback for the Wildcats.
Ole Miss overall isn’t as strong as last season but still competes at a high level.
Tennessee is in a great position. They matchup with every single SEC team. They can play with size in Spearman, Hollingshead, Latham or Puckett. They can play with skill and talent with a set of talented guards in Cooper, Boyd, Spear, Whitehorn, and Spencer. Or with grit in Ayodele!
South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and LSU are the best teams in the SEC.
Tennessee is the only team with the athletes to matchup 5 on 5 against South Carolina, Texas, and LSU.

If it tells you anything about her and where they’re at, I forgot all about them even being in the conference for women’s basketball 😳😂
Right. She is one of the highest paid coaches in women's basketball and just can't coach. She has been able to recruit great talent at Georgia and A&M and she continues to lose and her players never get better, i.e., Barker who transferred. The just lost their opener to a nobody.

$100 says Joni Taylor is trying to get a WNBA job and ditch the team she ran into the ground. If she stays at A&M she’s for sure getting fired this season.

My impression of So Carolina is that they really miss Watkins.
They needed this game to be close to show them where they are and where they need to go moving forward. We will not go undefeated. The talent level is too close at the top and these games against us are going to be wars. It's what you expect as reining national champions. You want the headlines the next day....beat South Carolina. That will do it. These teams know that so they will always bring their "A" game to play us. That's the way it should be.

Did we watch the same game? Strack is very, very ready. Teoni Key also looked good.

Kentucky will get blasted against athletic teams unless they shoot the cover off the basketball if they faced those teams at full strength.
It goes to show you are just doing the usual.
Tennessee has 13 healthy players that could’ve done that against USC Upstate.
Be forreal.
Kentucky’s team last season won in a blowout against USC Upstate.
You wouldn’t be saying a thing about Kentucky performance if it wasn’t due to the hype this program received over the summer. Now since people have seen them on the court that hype is starting to come back down to earth.
Decent team overall. Above average skill in some spots.
And missing players like Petty and Jenkins from last season that would’ve given them significantly more balance as a team.

Dauda made a mistake going there imo. She’s way down the depth chart. With her 3 ball she would have been such a nice fit at UT.

I agree SC is missing a physical presence inside on defense. Kitts has a nice motor and attacks the offensive glass but she’s just such a string bean. She’s easy to push around in there.

Edwards is going to be a beast but she’s lost defensively at the moment. Extremely athletic and talented on the offensive end but she gave up a lot of layups yesterday.

I’m watching Tennessee tonight. And then Texas over the weekend.
Once those opening games are played and other teams play their second contest of the regular season we’ll start to get a clearer picture of who the big dogs are in the SEC.
This isn’t even about rankings and predictions.
This is about who I’ll put my money on in a battle against any team in WBB.
My big dog status teams in the SEC right now are:
South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee, LSU, and Ole Miss.
