Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2023-24

Sure totally allowed, just not rosy opinions about Vanderbilt that are grossly untrue.

Are you a Lady Vol fan or not?

Also, her name is BLAKES and she is real, but a freshman. There will be a return to the mean for her when she hits real competition.

Right. Mia and Mya Pauldo already got a dub over Blakes in HS and several other SEC players in these folks fav list.
Good thing she went to Vandy. Wasn’t going to play in front of Ruby Whitehorn or Talaysia Cooper.
Kaniya Boyd is not playing for stats (she rarely takes shots) and I bet on the court when TN face Vandy she’ll be able to match up with any of Vandy guards.

Yikes. Syracuse loses to U of Albany by a triple at (nearly) the buzzer. Not a good loss for them at all; it’s not the blowout loss to St. Joe’s, which was worse, but these are two games now that they ostensibly should have won.

I don’t have any specific insights beyond that because I was (of course) at home watching the UConn game and only had the Syracuse game on in the background. But, yikes.

Guess they lost more in Fair than I thought! :confused:o_O

“I’m disappointed in my fanbase here,” Legette-Jack added. “I’m glad I walked in when I did so our players can see that nobody, nobody ******* cares, man. We up here crying outside and we got a fun, let’s go have a party in here. It’s not you guys. It’s everybody.”

Man that's sad. I make fun of Yo for saying basically the same about OM fans last year. WBB attendance is so weird. Either you have star power and multiple nattys like So Car, UConn, LSU Iowa and pack the house or truly no one cares. There's SO little middle ground, like the LVs hold, where you can be ok and promising and still get a decent crowd.

As I've watched various early season games on SEC+, it's almost always several hundred of the teams nearest and dearest scattered around a way too big arena. I know these early games are awful and that's part of the problem. Hopefully it picks up a bit in conference season.

Sounds like FLJ is spiraling. I remember she was talked about as a possibility for the LV job last spring.

I mean, I understand her frustration, but her negativity is NOT going to help things. This part from the story after the loss is setting off alarms for me:

“This is what I’ve been trying to tell our young people on this team. Nobody cares about our program. Nobody cares about women’s basketball,” Legette-Jack said to start her press conference.

She evidently thinks her best move is to remind her team that "nobody cares about our program. Nobody cares about women's basketball."

Instead of putting out good energy, she is actually making things exponentially worse by doing that. No wonder they're not playing well. Makes me sad for her players.

It may be time for her to step away from her alma mater. Ugh.

Yeah, that's why I said she's spiraling. Clearly out of Fs to give. You wonder if she'll make it the rest of the season. There's an extra layer of pressure when it's the alma mater, ask Holly and Kelly.

Ohio State barely beat Belmont. No reason to hope Tennessee doesn’t play them. How many players did UCONN play tonight?
If about 7-8 played, I imagine if Coach Caldwell had the same philosophy and played 8-9 TN could’ve beaten both Samford and UT Martin by 50+ and Liberty by between 30-40 points.
I think her idea of playing 11-12 will bode well by conference play so it help the team in the long run.
FYI, Geno played the bench = 11 players.

I would have to disagree.. Blakes is better than Boyd. Blakes could have played at UConn but the backcourt was loaded. She will help Vandy in SEC play. She will average 12 ppg. :)

You and I were posting at the same time, only I got a phone call that stopped me before posting. By the time I got back to my screen finished up and then posted, only then did I see that you'd been posting basically the same thing. Oopsie!

I would not be the least surprised if she is put on (at least temporary) leave by the AD to undergo evaluation. She has clearly had a major episode of some sort.

After that public breakdown and admission that she's telling her players nobody cares about them or their sport, I can't imagine any recruit who was considering Syracuse will continue to. Who wants to go play for a coach who'd say that out loud?

Some kind of major public explanation and course correction must be done soon. I feel really bad for Felisha and hope she gets help and will feel better soon.

(Not quoting everyone but I agree with the takes here.) I find all of this really disappointing to hear. I had a lot of respect for Coach Jack the past two years and right now that good will is really be squandered away. Last year they saw some success and an uptick in attendance. But you cannot just expect that year in and year out if you are not producing results -- especially when your program does not have a history of being very good.

I mean, let's not BS ourselves here: Syracuse WBB has zero history. They are not UConn, the LVs, South Carolina, etc. They were in the Big East 10 years and enjoyed a small part of the limelight (mostly thanks to bigger basketball schools), but that was then and this is now. You have to earn fans. Look, I get it, it's tough. God knows I have watched a decade+ of UConn football being absolute trash -- now they are enjoying a bit of an uptick but everyone involved is sitting there saying, we know we have to win people's respect, we know that fans want to see continued success, we're grateful to the people who do show up. That's exactly the proper kind of attitude to have. You're not owed anything, sorry to say.

I'd even point to TN as a prime example -- you guys have struggled since Pat and there are many loyal fans who have stuck around, but the casual fans won't be back until TN is up there again with the elite. That will be UConn one day too, and SCar, and so it goes. That's just sports. It's not even unique to WBB. But I know for a fact that there are loads of Cuse WBB faithful who have been season ticket holders for years.

Sitting around and complaining isn't going to cut it. Especially since when they did well last season, people showed up. Like, I don't even care about Syracuse WBB, not really. I'm showing up because I'm a fan of college WBB and I want to support local teams. I've even shelled out money to go watch Le Moyne WBB play the lowest tier of DIV1 basketball in a high school gym alongside maybe 50 other fans -- and you know what, I bet Le Moyne was grateful for everyone that showed up. I've been in the area for almost a decade and I've faithfully gone to at least 5 Cuse games a year (usually more). Now I'm a season ticket holder, because last year they won me over. But I don't know if I will be doing it again next year. Not because of the record, but because if the attitude is "no one cares" then why should I support you? I'm not saying that Coach Jack should be handing out attendance badges but come on, ungrateful much??

Sorry for the rant but this kind of attitude just really pisses me off. I mean, really??

Edited to add: If it is a mental/emotional issue that is making her speak out of turn, I will be very forgiving. But if this is just the truth coming out then that's a big NO from me.

Sarah Strong is the real deal, and right now I believe she is the second-best player on the UConn team.
16 Pts 8 reb 4.8 assists 2.5 steals 2 blocks.
She was having trouble getting her 3 pt shot to fall, but after going 0-7 against UNC, starting 0-3 against FDU, she made her last four 3's to finish 4-7. This girl has all the tools and by the end of the year she will be the freshman of the year.

They have the same roster plus one good freshman.

They have signed 3 2025 players, none of whom are close to cracking the top 100 high school players.

Stop gaslighting in favor of Vandy lmao. Wtf wrong with you?
To be fair, this is the Non -Lady Vols Basketball News thread so gaslighting as you say is allowed, even for Vanderbilt.

The only teams I believe are weak in the SEC this season are A&M, Arkansas, Missouri, and Georgia. Still wary of playing Florida, Vandy, Auburn, Miss St or Kentucky on the road. Those are nine teams you would like to beat, but certainly possible to lose to one of them on the road at least the five latter. Would have to play really badly to lose to the first four mentioned. Miss St, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Alabama are the next five with any finishing in front or behind one another. Texas, LSU, and SC seem to be the three standout teams in the league although LSU is looking a little suspect of belonging in that group.

I see Tennessee going 11 and 5 or 10 and 6 in the SEC need to be a little bigger inside. I like our perimeter players as much as any other team in the league. Have to see us guard someone in the post that I consider a good player to say were getting better. Last two post players both fairly good players dominated in there although we really didn't do much guarding and they were scoring on overplay by to many players on the ball.

I have a strong feeling that SC's 43 game winning streak will come to an end this Sunday @ UCLA. For whatever reason(s) this year's team is still struggling to find their identity on offense and several players are flailing mightily so far shooting the ball. Almost seems like they have hit a wall with mental fatigue and it is leading to a disjointed team effort, especially on offense. Wouldn't surprise me if some of those girls are a bit burned out after the past two seasons. They have won 43 straight, 84 of last 85 and 98 of last 100. Mental stress and fatigue from that long run is catching up imo.

Raven might lose her starting position if she doesn't break out of her slump soon, ditto for Feagin.

Probably time to start Watkins and Fulwiley anyway. Tessa Johnson needs more minutes also.

I agree Lauren Betts and UCLA will win this game.

My oldest daughter lives in Syracuse and both my granddaughters (10 & 8) play several sports. The university has (or at least had last year) several attractive ticket bundling options to encourage attendance for a number of sports, women’s basketball included, which my kids took advantage of. I feel bad that despite periodic success on the court, SU has never had a culture of supporting women’s basketball.

I think Syracuse women’s basketball, when they were coached by Hillsman, blew a great opportunity to try and expand their fan base by refusing to schedule a homecoming game with UConn when Stewart was on the team. If I recall correctly, Connecticut scheduled with Colgate instead and played to a sellout crowd, while the same night, the Orange drew about 350 fans for their game which was in the Carrier Dome. And if you’re never seen the Dome, it seats over 30,000.

In any event, I agree with IVOCD, I completely get the frustration but barking out loud like this won’t help matters.
