Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2024-25

25 Kentucky
20 Western Kentucky
2nd qtr
Kentucky getting all the 50/50 calls in this game.
Western Kentucky could’ve took the lead but missed out with back to back empty possessions.
Both of these teams lack speed.

Watching Vandy vs Alabama A&M.

Vandy isn’t the most athletic team on the court. SEC play is going to be tough for them.

I agree, I’m watching too and I’m just not impressed. I’ve watched them 5-6 times this season. I think they end up right about where they were last season. Likely right around .500 in the SEC maybe worse with the addition of Texas and OU.

They keep saying Pierre is 6’2” but she doesn’t look a bit over 5’11” to me. Nice player but extremely undersized in the SEC for how and where she is effective.

Blakes is a nice player, she should transfer to a real contender.

Blakes game is similar to Samara Spencer who won Freshman of the Year in the SEC.
Vandy is a decent team.
The forward and the rest of their core is going to have to play defense to have success in this league.
The officiating has heavily favored Vandy in this game as Alabama A&M has blown by defenders on several drives and got hacked but no foul was called.
Vandy won’t get that benefit in SEC play.

Yeah A&M really hasn’t had much trouble with their press, they’re just terrible with the ball. Mostly unforced turnovers and really wild shots.

Vandy will not be able to use their press at all against SEC teams. It’s really just token pressure.

Vandy is just boring to watch. They’re a decent team for sure but there is nothing exciting about what they’re doing.

That arena is empty and lifeless. You’d think they’d have a little more fan support with a record like 12-1.

Watching OU and NMST and as I’ve said all season I just dont see it with OU. What I’m watching is absolutely not a top 10 team.

Slow, can’t finish, no athletic guards. Just a bunch of 6’ girls who don’t rebound.

They try to play fast but their shot selection is horrible and their pace doesn’t really benefit them. Beers has a hard time staying consistently involved because she’s so slow down the floor her team has usually taken a bad shot before she gets a touch.

trivia; Who officially determines the giving of an assist. Notre Dame playing at home had 32 assists on 36 baskets, ten of which were 3 pts made. That stat would indicate no rebounded ball putbacks or individual driving layups.

Similar individual interpretions on turnovers . example offensive player gets tied up. a TO ? or only a TO if the arrow gives the ball to the other team? or neither?

New Mexico cut the lead to 1 point 44-45 and then all the calls went Oklahoma way on their homecourt to extend the lead in the 3rd qtr.
To think there’s some casual LV fans penciling in a loss to Oklahoma is just nonsense.

They won't be able to get 30 minutes out of their big 6'4'' center, she's just too big to keep up for a full game, surely. We'll need to limit her offensiv production as much as we can while she is in. If we do that, we win.

She's so much of their production — leading rebounder and scorer — that we might be a tough matchup for OU to handle? Hoping for a big win (15+) so that the LSU @ UT game could be a top 10 matchup. [IMHO it should be a top 5 matchup if we do smack OU, but poll inertia...]

We will have to disagree on Beers, she had 19/12 and 4 blocks today. She is averaging about 18/10 so far and they have been limiting her minutes to about 21 per game so far. Once conference play begins she will play closer to 30. She averaged over 28 min per game last season in spite of a fractured nose she played through while having to wear a face mask. That’s really good production from your center, there is a reason she is likely All American again this year.

I don’t even really see that size as a factor in the SEC. She’ll have to be unguarded offensively and nearly perfect scoring on contested shots against the athletes in this league. We have three post that can guard her one on one.
She is almost identical in stature to the center from Iowa with a better offensive skill set.
Spearman and Hollingshead were both solid defensively in that game.
With Puckett coming alone offensively and Latham contributing defensively and rebounding strong our team is becoming formidable both on the perimeter and inside the paint.
