Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2024-25

Time to full court press on recruiting of Maya Nnaji, Ashlyn Watkins, and Kayla Oldacre. The decision process for 2022 Bigs just got a little murky. UConn, Stanford, and SCAR are all out of the running for the good players left.

I think with Cardosa on board Maya Nnaji, Ashlyn Watkins move away from SC ?

I agree Boston is a more versatile player than Key she can step out and shoot the mid-range. But as you and some others have said Key is a weapon for TN and we need her, And as i have said before TN needs a elite 4 or 5 player from the class of 2022 to even come close to dealing with SC and right now they don`t have any.
I didn't mean that as a slight to Tamari. I think that her skillset does not lend itself well to a double post, if the other player can't stretch the defense on offense and is not mobile enough to guard the perimeter on defense. We saw a bit of that with Kushkituah where they clogged the lane. SC had the same problem last year because they had 2 posts with Boston who could really only play right under the basket. So you had Boston sucking up a double team, but kicking it out to Saxton/Amihere doesn't do much since they couldn't hit mid range jumpers. Then you can't really switch Boston to the high post because neither of them necessarily needed a double team to defend them. Teams will need to defend Cardosa with a double team AND they'll need to defend Boston with a double team.

Yeah, Cardosa completely changes their 2022 recruiting strategy with post players. I think that they'll still find a way to get local kid Watkins, but Nnaji has to be looking elsewhere now. If SC was leading for Janiah Barker, she might be thinking otherwise.

I'm sure it's a risk Dawn's willing to take for a player that she knows can play at this level.

Let`s say you are correct Watkins, Nnaji, Barker look elsewhere now. Can Kellie and her staff reel 1 or 2 of them in ?

I think that the whole portal thing makes it harder with the formation of these superteams. I think what will happen is we'll go back to the late 90s/early 00s where the best players are all flocking to the same school. Some of these players may be willing to sit for a year if it means that they will be on a one of these superteams. The question is whether Tennessee can leapfrog a bunch of teams that are already in elite status to become a destination for the elite players to all flock over to. For that to happen, Kellie has to not be afraid to recruit over some of her players and upgrade the talent on the team.

What needs to happen now that the portal has become such an important part of basketball. The scholarship numbers need to be reduced to 13 just like the men. I know covid is the reason for the huge rosters now, but in order to get a little more parity 13 should be the scholarship total when we get back to normal.

I think it was more than a preference to play elsewhere. It was more like I wouldn't play at Tennessee if it was the last place on Earth.

OK. Guess I missed that in both the US and Brazilian sports press, at least according to what Google Translate could manage.

No you didn't miss it from there because I didn't take it from there. It was an opinion I formed from what I heard at the time she was being recruited. My opinion of that information is certainly not relevant to any other opinion of any other person on the matter.

Have u realized that most times key shot 2's around free throw areas it's going in but they need to encourage her to shoot more.

Ouch...

Given that Boston has a nice faceup game, Dawn can easily move her to the high post and let Kamila play low post. That will be one hell of a dangerous frontcourt.

SC ain't messing around...

This impacts Saxton and Amihere for sure. I don't know if Feagin has the skillset to play the 3, but it will cut into her playing time too. Probably Grissette also.

Feagin and Amihere will play the 3 some next year. Good thing for Sania is Aliyah and Laeticia are upperclassmen so she has plenty of time to get her shine same for Kamilla. I really like Watkins and I think we still can land her but not sure if she or the other posts are takes at this point. I can see Dawn focusing on Aalyah Del Rosario, Riley Stack, and Breya Cunningham.

I don't think anyone here seriously thought that Tennessee was in the running for Cardosa. It was more wishful thinking than anything else.

Yeah, no way. If I recall correctly when she moved to the state she came to Tennessee specifically because she wanted to play at UT potentially. The Holly camp never paid her one bit of attention and then it was too late by the time the coaching change happened.

Could be wrong but for some reason I think we never even offered her which is terrible considering what an asset she could have been.

@PRG had been clamoring for Cardosa early on, along with Treasure Hunt, when they were both HS freshmen. I didn't realize that Holly wasn't pursuing her...that's inexcusable. By my count, Hamilton Heights had 5 big time players: Massengill, Balogun, Hunt, Esmery Martinez, and Cardosa. Unreal that none of them ended up at Tennessee, other than Massengill's 2-year stint with the team.

SC was never leading for Barker. I can easily see some attrition coming from the post for SC. Feagin is good, but I think she will struggle to see the floor next season for sure.

I know I didn't. One of our poster insiders told us very clearly that she was NOT coming to Tennessee. I don't know what happened but to have a perennial national power house high school in the back yard and only sign one player that didn't stay does not feel right. Our recruiting could not have miscalculated or evaluated so poorly so I think there is more to the story than the popular story line. Not wanting to start drama though.....

So with the past being behind us we / Kellie needs to lock down in state talent. We Can not let it get away from us for any reason. Nothing we can do about any that got away but it has to stop now. I have faith we are heading in the right direction with recruiting but alot rides on the portal. I expected to get a good point guard from the portal but I trust CKH knows what she is doing. Other teams are making upgrades which might bite them in the future but right now it would be a nice problem to have IMO

I have not seen much high school BB since COVID ! Even our state tournament had limited fans ..... Mostly parents and coaches .

Watched coach Hunt teams for several years and obviously they had a team full of college players . Kamilla was the most interesting as we had 6’6” number ONE RANKED player that would get the rebound and immediately bring the ball down to the Munchkins to take it away from her .... Camilla did not do this as a freshman in high school and after four years of Holly coaching ..... our center was never taught basic basketball principles? Esmery came in late but was a very aggressive player with raw skills . Vic at Miss. State offered her and we never saw anything in her till she helped W. Virgina beat us ! She is no secret now ! Even though she was only a 3 star .... anyone with half a brain could see her potential? But we were not interested? But Vic was ????? I guess that’s why he got a promotion and more money and Holly ..... well enough said . 👍.

Coach Hunt is on this forum ..... I enjoyed watching her kids play . All of the players that I watched are playing in college. I’ll watch any age or any sex play bb as long if they have good principles and they are obviously taught how to play the game right ! Just saying
