Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2024-25

Arizona struggling mightily on the offensive end as they have much of the season. Without McDonald they have nobody who can create their own shot. Reese is competitive but she’s honestly not that athletic.

Yeaney ain’t it. She’s so athletic, but she just cannot finish. I see why she didn’t stick at Indiana. Terri’s players tend to finish really well, I’m sure that drove her nuts in practice.
Who do you think is going to win in the Arizona-UNC matchup?

I believe Arizona will win that game as well. I have them beating UNC then losing to South Carolina in the Sweet 16.

Believe it will be within a 10 point spread, but don’t think UNC will be able to score against the Arizona defense. Too much size and too much great perimeter defense from Thomas and Pellington.

SC only has one black head coach in any sport. It is the only sport where they are actually doing any significant winning. Women's basketball is their claim to fame right now and they have nothing else to be proud of in their overall sports program. I guess that is why so many of them act out the way they do. You need to have something to believe in and women's basketball is it for them the last few seasons.

SC head track coach is black.

I am an admitted attendance stat nerd, especially for the sports I follow that I want to see grow in popularity such as women's basketball. It seems to me that the attendance this year was overall the best it has been for the first round NCAAW's games!! Here are the teams that hosted first round games. UCONN, LSU, Oklahoma, Louisville, Tennessee, Iowa State, Texas, South Carolina, Stanford, Iowa, Baylor, Michigan, North Carolina State, Arizona, Maryland, and Indiana. For fun, guess the teams that drew the best and the worst. If your O/C like me, list you guesses from best to worst. In my subsequent post, I will list them in order. An exception is Baylor, which I couldn't find the attendance. Think it wasn't that high as attendance there has suffered with Mulkey leaving and the men's team doing so well. Any way, there are some surprises!!

I'm sure Tennessee was down some because of the men playing and a lot of fans traveling with them. I expect a bigger crowd for us Monday night.

1. Iowa - 14,382 (almost sold out)
2. Arizona - 9,573
3. South Carolina - 8,478
4. Louisville - 8,407
5. LSU - 7,890
6. Michigan - 6,471
7. Indiana - 6,389
8. Iowa State - 5,546
9. NC State - 5,483 (practically sellout - a very few single tickets remaining)
10. Tennessee - 5,448
11. UConn - 5,073
12. Maryland - 4,776
13. Oklahoma - 3,952
14. Baylor 3,855 (Thanks Volfan2012)
15.Texas - 3,822
16. Stanford - 3,610 (Defending national champions !?)

A couple of observations - The Big Ten did well, accounting for 3 of the top 7whereas the Big 12 did poorly (3 of the bottom 4). The biggest long time blue bloods UT, Uconn, and Stanford didn't do so well.

California still has COVID restrictions. Particularly in the very liberal area where Stanford is located. Has really hurt their attendance.

How much did time of game affect attendance?

How much did time of game affect attendance?
Good question> i don't know the answer as it seems scattershot. For example, I though Iowa's game seemed one of the worst timed games yet had by far the best attendance. It started at 4:00 on a Friday, meaning that many people had to take off early from work to get there and parents had to make arrangements for someone to be at home for the kids when they arrived from school. I think if we want to look if game times impacted attendance, a good answer will be if the 2nd round games drew significantly better than the first round games. They typically don't, especially the 2nd round games on Monday nights.

Iowa is all-in for basketball -- Football? What's that? -- and having Caitlyn Clark, born and raised in Des Moines, to support as a perrennial contender for National Player of the Year has been the most exciting thing to happen in Iowa since they developed the Red Delicious apple.

Having the Vols game at 5:15 had to have kept some away yesterday. Even so, it was a disappointing number. They did sound pretty loud at times, though.
