It sounds similar to us in 2005. They didn't send us to Chattanooga because it would've supposedly been a slap in the face to the #1 overall seed that year, LSU. So LSU got Chattanooga and we got Philadelphia. Similarly, SC, the #1 overall seed, got sent to Greensboro. I guess it makes sense. The #1 overall seed should get the regional site that's closest to them.
Funny how UConn always gets a home regional regardless of seeding, though. No matter what seed they were, they would've been in Bridgeport. In that regard, what I've always been told is it's about travel cost, etc. Funny how that's never the case with any other team.
It's the same thing I always say. UConn's given SO MANY advantages. ESPN, NCAA brackets, Team USA, their conference slate - they are given so much help, so many breaks. And then people ooh and aah and say "how do they do it?" Well here's one part of how - since 2014, they haven't had to travel more than 2.5 hours away from their home court before the Final Four. Hell, when they announced the Bridgeport regional, ESPN's crack analysts didn't even make a fuss about the fact the #1 would have to play an Away game at UConn if seeding held. They talked about Oklahoma or this game or that game. A real reporter, a real analyst, would have immediately pointed out the favoritism. But no, no no, this sport has to be all smiles and sunshine, so they manage a "oh gosh, that's a tough region for the other teams" and on the circus goes.
I mean for crying out loud. It was only a few weeks ago that Rebecca Lobo was on ESPN whining about how "UConn needed to play in Bridgeport" on ESPN. What kind of "analysis" is that? A team with 12 titles, countless wins, every five star recruit it could want, and their former player is on ESPN lobbying for UConn to get the Bridgeport regional because they somehow deserved it. Don't talk to me about parity or sport or fairness, when the sport is fine with punking other teams like that. All they had to do was put UConn in another region. Problem solved. But nooooooooo. Can't have that. And here we are again.
It's just ridiculous. Everyone puts in lip service for parity or fairness or whatever, and then something like this happens, and all we get is a shrug or a "yeah, that's certainly a shame," and UConn laughs their way to another Final Four. The Huskies have this down to a science. No wonder nothing ever changes.
And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying UConn isn't a good team at this point. I'm just saying that, yet again, their special consideration affords them luxuries and luck that no one else seems to get - and serves up a seriously raw deal to a team that earned better than the NCAA gave it. Sorry NC State! Sucks to be you. But hey. The desired result was manufactured. They sold some tickets and ESPN got their preferred team in the Final Four. So. Smiles and sunshine.
