Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2024-25

SC is at College Park Md. tonight, 6 PM on Espn2 to face #17 Maryland.

Not sure what to expect from the Terps this year. Brenda has built a different type team this go around, every player on the team is listed as a guard except for the Swiss girl, Chardon, who is listed as a 6'2" F. There are 3 "guards" listed that are between 6'2"-6'3", I am sure they play like traditional wings. Not one center on this team, and just the one forward that barely plays. Starting lineup is 3 true guards and two wings, interesting. It’s like they have sacrificed some of the paint in exchange for a faster more athletic lineup that will play fast tempo.

Haven't watched them play yet this year, but I am speculating they play a fast break quick tempo style with all those guards/wings, probably trap some and shoot the three a bunch also.

I'll call this one and say SC 82 Md 67. Boston/Feagin/Saxton/Watkins/Cardoso should feast down low against this smaller lineup. SC guards are going to be working real hard on defense this game, will take some of their offense away. Bigs is diff story, the SC front line players will score a bunch, Dawn is going to try to punish those smaller girls down low.
Brenda had to take whatever transfers wanted to come in due to graduation and those players transferred out and all of transfers in were all guards. The downside of primarily dependent on the portal for players is that the transfers coming in aren't going to be of equal value of the players leaving.

If you like getting inside stuff of things going on within a program that you didn't know, this article does that. Especially the Coach/Player interactions and team dynamics the public doesn't see..

a quote: “Staley said around the end of September, she told Cooke to "just play -- don't worry about missed shots, don't worry about turnovers. This is your last year, F it."

'This team could be better than last year's': Can South Carolina win back-to-back titles?

They are all so friggin dialed in to doing everything right…And Dawn talks real to them, hard love.

I watched Maryland's first game. Diamond Miller was injured in the first half and didn't come back, but it sounds a bit like the Horston situation, day-to-day. I imagine Brenda could be keeping any updates close to her vest to make the Gamecocks plan for either scenario.

Abby Meyers was a great pickup for Maryland.

USCe may develop into a championship team but what I saw last night looked beatable.
Every team is beatable Rickster. Lot of parity now in WBB. The SC game at Md. last night looked very similar to the same blue print that SC used last season to win it all: Massive rebounding edge, punishing defense and just enough offense. They out rebounded MD by 23, blocked 11 shots and scored 81 points while playing the bench a bunch.

They beat a ranked opponent on the road by 25. You could nit pick and find some things they need to get better at, shooting % from the guards primary, Raven hasn’t found her stroke just yet. But they are already in full speed mode on their defense and rebounding as well as breaking presses, moving the ball on offense and getting it into the low post. Players know their roles and the bench is getting plenty of action to build depth.

Feagin and Watkins are going to play meaningful minutes, probably Hall as well in addition to Cordoso and Amihere. Hall is coming off an illness that has slowed her PT out of the gate. She is a great looking player that can shoot and defend. The front line is absolutely stacked. Cooper needs more time to develop imo.

I feel the need to keep reminding everyone it's early EARLY in the season for everybody. Nobody is going to look as good now as they will later on, and by the time we play them both our teams are likely to be miles aheadof where they are right now.

We must have watched different games. Cardosa and Boston combo in the 3rd quarter was unstoppable. They dismantled a pretty good team last night.
When Boston has to play 30 or more minutes then you know SC is in a game. Until then, she and the other starters will share time to stay fresh and develop depth. CDS has prepared this team well in the offseason, they are not far off.

We will know for sure in a week when they travel to Stanford, but I suspect they show well in that game also.

Good luck LV fans in the Indiana game btw. They are a really good team with 3 legit scorers. Good news for UT is that they do not press, almost ever. And they are not built to win the board battle. Holmes is their post player, excellent scorer but slight in rebounds. Berger and Scalia are legit shooters. UT will need to establish the post game and play great perimeter defense.

Must have. Didn't think Maryland looked very good either.

I've read that MD is mostly guards this year. No height. Diamond Miller did not play as an injury has sidelined her. Abby Myers kept MD in the game in the first half. However, SC picked up the defense on her in the second half.
I thought SC picked up the pace in the 3rd quarter. Cardoso got cranked up after a technical and seemed to score ten points in two minutes. Any team will have trouble with SC when they have Boston, Amihere and Cardoso in the lineup together.

Brenda has her work cut out this year given all the transfers they lost. Maryland is not going to do well against any teams that have a solid post presence. They have none, especially since losing Reese. The talk all of offseason is how they will handle the lack of height and presence inside the paint.

They do have some nice guards/wings. Meyers is very good and they didn't have Miller. Briggs was a good player at Florida but she has been meh for me so far

Quite frankly out of all the LSU players I was more impressed with their freshmen Sa’Myah Smith. I remember us recruiting her out of HS before her knee injuries. If she can stay healthy she will be a good one.

Reese is great but truthfully I would hate to be a teammate of someone who gets 99% of the attention no matter what she does or doesn’t do. I saw lots of great performances by other LSU players but instead it’s only about Reese
We did recruit Smith and we were in her top 5 i thought. She is very smooth and is going to be a nightmare to play against in theSEC

I like her a lot and she will be a beast down the road. She does need another year or so of putting on muscle when banging against other SEC posts but I think her rebounding alone will get her lots of minutes this year. Desoto is pumping out some great talents, obviously that previous senior class but also for 25 and 26 recruits.

Ta'Niya Latson is probably one of my favorite freshmen so far. I get FSU has played no one but you can see how talented she is.

Latson is talented. i like her game as well.

Tamia Ware is in the portal out of LSU. I do hope there is at least a visit. Really think she’s an awesome player. Level headed PG who can score. Not unlike Powell who I wouldn’t mind having 2 of.

Kinda depends why she's leaving Kim. Is she not good enough to get minutes or just needs a fresh start or something else?

Kim said she is a great kid just wants to go somewhere that she can play a little more

Sees the writing on the wall playing behind Morris and Johnson.
