Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2024-25

SC should do their business at Uconn, it’s uncertain of course, but I bet they win there. Prob really close game though. Uconn shoots so well. Prob something like 72-64 SC…Uconn such a great team, I never try to underestimate them ever…
All you have to do is guard them. Villanova is not the greatest defensive team in the country but they had them sucking wind and needing a miracle at the end of the game. Big Dork a 27 percent three point shooter hit a three from about 25 feet when the clock was running down to change the game and give UConn just enough to hold them off until the clock ran out. Villanova pushed them hard and anyone that does that will beat them if they have enough offensive talent.

Villanova is a better defensive team than UConn. They are ranked 42nd while UConn is ranked 60th. I agree that UConn was sucking wind but it was mostly because of the starter's minutes (194) and their schedule, playing 4 games in 8 days. Another reason that this game was so close was that UConn could not limit Siegrist.

Yes they need some players back cause this game you could see how a real deep team with defense and offense could be trouble for them.

I think it should be considered that UConn played 4 games in 8 days. The players did play poorly against Villanova, yet I'd like to know how Horston, Hollingshead, Walker, Jackson, and Puckett would have performed against say Ole Miss if they had played virtually every minute of all 3 previous games. Indeed, practically every minute of every game for a month. Especially if the previous game had been a tough one against say LSU at the Assembly Center who had a loud, vocal, sellout crowd?

Exactly the point how they going to keep it up down the stretch if they get no one back. Cause a lot deeper and better teams than Villanova waiting in the NCAA.

You couldn't be more than right. How this team has somehow maintained a high level and remained in the top 10 is a miracle shell game that the UConn coaches have achieved. Yet, if this team can get healthy...healthier, and can get the current starting 5 some rest, they have a legitimate chance at a title.

Totally believe that just a couple that can take like 20 to 30 of the minutes. I would think Ducharme would get back Fudd is a big unknown.

I think it's more the reverse. Azzi, after extensive examination, did not have another procedure performed on her, which meant the clinicians found no added structural damage. Any procedure would have meant she's lost for the season. Instead the doctors put her in a brace to rest the knee and said they'd reevaluate in two weeks. That was on Jan 20th. I think Azzi will be back some time after the SC game. Ducharme is in a far different boat. Her head and neck problems, before the concussion, were proving difficult to diagnose. The doctors recommended rest and pretty much left it up to the player to demonstrate when she was ready. Then she came back and banged her head pretty severely again. Now all the pieces are thrown in the air. No one knows when she'll return, and the clinicians have given no timetable for reevaluation. Ducharme is a really talented player with fine shooting skills. Her and Azzi in the lineup would really stretch the defense and open up the passing lanes. Ducharme is also better at getting to the rim than any player on UConn other than Paige. Further, when Azzi played Geno had her bring up the ball because she adjusted well to the pressure on her at the arc. Better than Nika. Also with a full lineup at the beginning of the season Geno pressed full court which resulted in many more easy baskets. That option is now gone. Worse, Geno has had to restrict his offense because he doesn't have the corner shooters he had in Ducharme and Azzi, and he can't run his triangle variations. As I said, the UConn coaches have been playing this shell game of accentuating their strengths, limiting what the defenses see, and hiding their weaknesses.

34 teams receiving votes and only 3 are SEC teams. Just 2 ranked. That has to be a first or at least rare. Not sure why Ole Miss isn't at least receiving votes though if Purdue, UNLV, Oregon, and Columbia are also receiving votes.

Columbia deserves the rankings. They have two more Quad One wins than they have loses.

Oregon has four less Quad One wins than they have losses.

Also i see Texas is back in the top 25 ? before Tennessee ?

While I think Tennessee deserves to be back in the top 25, I think Texas is probably even more deserving. They're #10 in the NET (we're #19), they're #17 in the Massey ratings (we're #22), they're #22 in RPI (we're #19), and they're #11 in HHS ratings (we're #14). By all these measures we're a top 25 team, but I think our biggest blocker at this point is a signature win (though our Alabama and Colorado wins are a little underrated, since they're both in the top 25 in several of these ratings). Texas has beaten Iowa State, Oklahoma, Baylor, and Southern Cal (which is starting to look like a better win than it did).

Edit: Though I would say that Texas's losses to Marquette, Oklahoma State, and especially Texas Tech (and probably the losses to South Florida and Louisville, too!) are worse than any of Tennessee's losses.

Very well articulated @JordyG

You have to ask yourself: How does Massey reach that conclusion?

NCAA stats on "scoring defense" ranks UConn 60th.

NCAA College Women's Basketball DI current team Stats | NCAA.com

You must be aware the NCAA uses a simple division of opponents total points by number of games. That is probably not the best method of determining an accurate estimation. A team that has a plodding offense of using the clock will appear to have a better defense than a team with a quick flowing offense. Also a team that plays many teams of much lower skills would appear to have a good defense (LSU #3). A much more accurate comparison is to acquire the average offensive output by all the opponents in their other games and then compare that to the offensive output against the one team. Then once you have those figures rank all teams by deviation from their unique mean. But if you like it simple then use the NCAA.

To this dumbass committee ..LSU kept getting reward & promotion when they haven't played any top teams, while top 20 teams constantly fighting each other. First time I'm supporting Uconn. Why are they ranked #5 and Kim #3

Massey Defensive Rates
Villanova 28
Tennessee 38
I knew they were better than us but not near as good as some of the teams you face in the NCAA tourney. The fact that were rated number 38 seems to have some bias to it probably comes from all the teams we've won against a level below. Just top ten teams I am sure we get up towards a 100 and even past.
