Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2024-25

If no one, or even just one or two leave, it will be a big accomplishment for the staff. These days it's almost unheard of to not have anyone transfer out. Also, with such a high powered recruiting class coming in, mins are going to get increasingly hard to come by. Someone's mins are going down.

That's why I don't really see Strickland increasing her role; she'll be an upper classman next yr so she'd have to be much better than the younger players to have a meaningful role.

Looking at the football team right now, we may be surprised by some of the players who leave.

Only thing helping us out is we lose a lot of seniors and Kim plays a lot of players. Her teams are pretty much always going to go 10 deep. I don’t see anyone who would be returning losing minutes at this point.

True but I don't see anyone not currently in the ten man rotation getting in over the talented freshmen, esp if Wynn comes back also. Five out, Sara, Jewel, Jill, Tess, and Spencer and five frosh plus Wynn coming in. Plus whoever they get in the portal (an athletic post please!) Hard for Edie, Ace, Wells to crack that.

That I agree on, I think they remain where they are and are just great culture pieces for the program.

Does Wells have another year or no? For some reason I thought this was it for her? If she has one more and can rehab back to pre-injury I think she would break the rotation. She’s a pure scorer with a sweet shot when healthy.

If DW got a redshirt last yr, this yr is her Sr season and she'll have her Covid yr yet to play. She came here w a possible 2 yrs. She's one I could see transferring. She'd be in her last yr next yr; the favor's going to go toward the younger guards.

Yeah hard to tell, if she has another year I feel like she sticks it out unless her body just can’t handle the level of conditioning Caldwell requires. If she was gonna leave this was the year to do it.

Really seems like her ACL set her back considerably compared to some other players. When she does play I really haven’t seen her hit a sprint yet, she’s being extra careful.

She could be a really good veteran presence for us at the PG if she gets healthy and a year to learn the system is always a good thing.

Wells not coming back!

I have a feeling she's about to break out. She could be great, IMO. I mean, REALLY great.

One thing I always think every time I see her, and that's that she has the best physical build on the team, and maybe even of anyone I've seen in decades. When Rickea was at her peak at Tennessee she was built to win, for sure. Latham's proportions are perfect for basketball, and I honestly think she could end up being a weapon to reckon with before this season is over.

Latham has the most upside on the team.. I agree that she has a good physical presence but as far as the team goes it’s several right there with her that look the part in Spencer, Spearman, Cooper, Whitehorn, Hollingshead, and Boyd.
The game announcer talked during the game yesterday about how strong this team is and you can see it in their stature.

Sorry, all players on our team have a meaningful role.

So sue us. Have Barney make a citizen's arrest. Yes it's technically off topic but we're six people talking to each other and the conversation strays. Not like the forum is bursting with activity that makes things hard to follow.

If Latson or Fulwiley or Taliah Scott hit the portal.. They are going to try to sign them. I do know that for a fact
Fulwiley has recently inked multiple high-profile NIL (name, image and likeness) deals with Red Bull and Stephen Curry's Curry Brand with Under Armour. Fulwiley also has her own signature butter sauce with local restaurant Mr. Seafood. Depending on the terms of the NIL a transfer could be considered a breach of contract.

Just FYI. Dude talking out his hind end as usual. Based on rule language it’s likely a company would lose in court if they tried to end a deal due to transfer. The deal is attached to the players name, image and likeness. Not the school.
The deal is also with the collective, not the school. The collectives exclusivity with one particular school has always been among the many gray areas. But most only service one school so hard to chase an NIL deal fm school to school. And donor definitely donate for just one school. Might lead to super collectives which would collect and distribute for many school so contracts could be transferable.

Meanwhile, some collectives which are exclusive are exploring the option of "claw backs" where the language in the contract states if it's broken by transfer, any money contracted for after a player leaves is no longer owed. And not as much is offered up front. That seems reasonable to me. Which is why it will probably never happen.

Also discussed, but even less likely, is requiring the school being transferred into to pay a buy out like they do with coaches under contract.

As always, what a freaking mess.

What are you saying? That a school who makes a deal with a player must continue to pay the person even after they transfer?

This is part of the mess and the mystery. It's actually the collective, not the school, making the deal w the player. But making it on behalf of the school. That's why it's even in question if the NIL deal is transferable to other schools.

Once a player leaves a school any contract they had with the school (collective) is voided. If Nico left Tenn tomorrow, the UT collective does not owe him future money.

That is not the case for actual marketing and advertisement contracts between a commercial company and an athlete which follow the athlete in MOST cases. There are exceptions for local and regional contracts which have terms and conditions for each individual contract that determines fulfillment.

Many top athletes have brand deals that have nothing to do with the school. That is what PG was talking about.
