Not too early....Utah State article

How many night game season openers has Utah State played versus major non-conference opponents?

The crowds at Neyland are typically better for season openers and night games. Since the USU game is both it should be a good crowd. Sunday night on National TV will be electric.

I'm sure USU is better than most non-Conf foes we typically schedule, but Neyland at its best can be a very intimidating environment.

I'm sure it will be a packed house and loud. That could very well play a factor. I'm not expecting a win, just a good game. Even if it's not a good game I'm still going to stop by ya'lls tailgate and chat it up with some real football fans.

Heard this one before. It is one game, anything can happen. Top recruiting classes don't always mean on the field results. Ask Texas the last five years about that one.

When's the last time Texas had a top recruiting class? We ain't Texas little buddy...

Good question, and no that stat doesn't take into account SOS. A top 10 defense playing an SEC schedule would be much more impressive (hi Alabama, Florida). We don't play the competition every single week that you do. I was also rating us higher than I should have, we were number 12 in total defense. To give you a perspective on individual talent on defense we have five: Alexander, Lawson, Doughty, Glover-Wright, Pataili'i players on NFL rosters currently that started last year (I'm sure that will change). Individual talent is one thing, but the unit also plays very well together and swarms to the football. They don't have the athleticism that you'd see in the SEC, but they are disciplined and hard working that goes a long ways.

Probably a longer answer than you were looking for. I don't think the D will be as good this year as last, especially considering what we lost in the secondary, but the front seven will still be solid. Don't expect to run on us easily- passing... well that's another story.

I am actually looking forward to seeing Kyler Fackrell. 6'5" and 245lbs. He matches up. I want to see AJ Johnson in comparison as well.

How would you compare the 2014 team with the 2011 squad that took Auburn to the wire?

UT wins this game by 17+!

I've been watching UT for a long time. UT will come out fired up and hammer USU.

I agree. I think we get out to an early lead, give up some big plays but win comfortably.

We need a thread for all these articles so we can blog our comments to the writer after we win........

The thing is they're really not. I would say the 2011 Cincy team we took to the woodshed or the 2012 NC State team we lit up are far better teams than 2014 Utah State.

I would put USU somewhere between 2013 Western KY and 2012 NC State talent-wise.

Hahaha

For those of you that haven't seen it, the writer predicts a 10-pt Aggies win then puts up a poll. Here are the results.

Getting worse ... lol. At least he's getting hits. How many could a guy from Utah have ever expected?

Tennessee game?
4% Usu by 10+
(53 votes)
10% USU by less than 10
(117 votes)
15% Tennessee by less than 10
(186 votes)
71% Tennessee by 10+
(868 votes)
1224 votes total

Not the worst article ever, it's just that he uses a few phrases that make them sound like the Patriots. I'll give him credit. He knows more @ us then I do them.

I guess that the writer failed to look at Bray's stats his last season at UT when he wrote "Tennessee has really struggled the last few seasons at QB" Bray did not struggle, if Worley were to put up Bray like numbers this season, UT wins eight or more games.

LOL! Man this poll thing was not a good idea for them at all (especially once VN got a hold of it)!

Vols winning by 10+ points is currently at 77%. I have a feeling it will be >90% by the end of the day...

Are some guys on here really getting excited about the USU game now because an online poll is going in UTs favor??

Whether or not we "win" that poll has no bearing on whether or not we'll get pressure on Keeton or be able to block Fackler.

I said most (not all).

Cincy and NC State were the "big" name non-Conf team we played in '11 and '12. Oregon was in '13 and Oklahoma is in '14.

When you compare USU to the FCS and mid-major FBS level schools we've recently played I would say USU is definitely better than most of them - see list below.

Western Kentucky
Ohio
Memphis
Tennessee-Martin
UAB
Montana
Buffalo
MTSU
Georgia State
Akron
Troy
Austin Peay
South Alabama

Hmm...interesting. Who is your DC? We may be shopping for one soon. :hi:

Long answers are sometimes nice, and necessary, as it wasn't a short question really.

Despite not being adjusted for SOS that's still impressive to put that many guys in the NFL. I'll ask another question now as well, seeing as you're the one I seem to get the most objective answers from on either side of this discussion haha. While I don't know what our run game will look like against you, I do believe our passing game will be where we can excel. How much talent do you actually return on defense? I've seen a lot of different answers for this. I think the defense is the biggest question for both of us. Yours very well could be either worse or better than last year, but due to some key players like Johnson, Maggit, and Sutton returning, our secondary and QB pressure may actually be better. Also we're going to be speedier and more athletic so there's a chance we could be better against the run outside as well. I guess in short what should we look for in terms of matchups and such on defense, and who all do you return?

Yeah. That and Randolph being the guy UT would depend on to cover their WR's were pretty funny comments.
