Official 2014 Summer Baseball Thread

Jeff Moberg had one of those "Reeeeeeeeal Good Nights". He ground out in his first at bat and got HBP in his last. In between however, he had two singles and a 3 run homer!

His line: 4 AB, 2 R, 3 H, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 1 HBP

The Blues won 9-6, Moberg was responsible for more than half the runs!

On the flip side, in the top of the 9th Moberg is charged with an E and two runs score to make the game closer than it should have been. Moberg lead the Blues going into tonight's game with 8 errors on the season. His Fld. % was .953...( as always, the stats for the California League are suspect, but at this time it's what I have to go on)

The Blues play their final regular season game tomorrow and the California Collegiate League Playoffs (The Blues are "IN") start on Friday.

In the Top of the 5th, with a runner on first, no outs, Jordan Rodgers bangs out a double... runners at 2 and 3, no outs and the Miners trail 7-0. Tyler Stubbefield (TAMU) got rocked in 2.2 innings of work...7 runs on 9 hits and he'd only given up 5 runs all summer.

I'm gonna leave it there. I've had all sorts of trouble with the Miners' stream tonight, I'll update JRodgers stats in the AM. Have a good evening VN!

Rodgers went 1/3 with a double last night. The Miners lost 14-0. Game two is tonight at 8 PM.

Y-D (AJ, VJax, Owenby) have moved into the lead in the East division by half a game. If the playoffs started today they would be the 2 seed. They play Chatham tonight at 7.

Andrew Lee is batting .354, he leads Brewster. If he had enough at bats his average would be third highest in the entire Cape. Pretty remarkable!

CDS was on the radio today, some notes...

CDS on KS, most important thing is that he's okay. KS is disappointed he can't contribute to the Miners playing for the ABL Championship. He'll be coming home tomorrow. (I presume all the guys in Alaska will be.)

It's been an extremely busy summer. The staff divided up getting around to see almost all of the current Vols, plus recruiting...

Asked about Stewart's Team USA experience, CDS say it will open up doors for our program and for future Vols.

Asked about Bret Marks and the summer he's having in the ABL, CDS: the injury at the beginning of last season set him back and we didn't get to see the pitcher we thought we'd be getting. If we can get some starts/innings out of him it will bolster the staff.

On adding Hall and Warren to the class, we got lucky, Warren opened his recruitment and we were the first ones in the door, we got him down here the Monday before I left for Alaska and he fell in love with the place. Hall is a "Brett Butler" type player, he might be able to help with the loss of Maddox, he'll have to earn his spot. Discussed his time at Cumberland.

Steven Kane is a good one, he'll be fighting for a spot in the weekend rotation or we'll be disappointed...

Wilkerson asked about Derek Lance's 1 IP for the Steam in which he got them in order, striking out two...CDS says hopefully we're past the point of having position players on the mound unless it's Andrew Lee.

They discuss how well Lee is hitting in the Cape, CDS: he could be a big scary left handed bat for us...Lee puts on a show in BP but it hasn't fully translated to games...Maggio will be slowed getting back in the fall so Lee will have more opportunities at 1B...

We've had three good recruiting classes, time to produce (paraphrased)

Usually the Sports Animal put's a pod cast of the show up in the evening.

Also, CDS mentioned Chip Dill (at Brewster w/ Lee) will be coming on as a pitching coach and Asaro will be moved to Director of Baseball Operations. This confirms what I posted earlier in the summer.

vol66, I just finished a book about the Cape Cod League called "The Last Best League" by Jim Collins. It's about the 2002 Cape Cod League season and it does a great job of explaining what the players go through as they play in this league and prepare for the draft. The latest edition has a 1 year later and a 10 years later chapter outlining how the players careers played out.

As much as you keep up with the Vols in the summer league, you might enjoy this book.
